I hate my little cactus that has thousands of the tiny tiny white needles. 100s of them stick in you instantly and they are impossible to get out cuz you can't see them and/or they break with parts still in you. I have over watered and underwatered hoping it will "accidently" die but the prickly bitch is thriving.
Opuntia? So with that one I always keep tweezers around. Then when you touch it you like hold your finger up and you can see the spines then just pull them out with the tweezers.
I have a philo lickity split. My mom got it in 1991 and its huge. We've never have a pest issue with it. It even survived being stranded in a moving pod for 3 weeks during the summer. ( three weeks in a metal box in the middle of summer with no water, no fresh air..nothing ) Its a bullet proof plant IMO. Sorry you had such a bad experience. Also alocasias are HEAVY feeders. fertilize fertilize fertilize. Also keep it in as warm of a room as you can in the fall-winter. Alocasias do not like to get cold or they start to go dormant and lose leaves.
Maybe I missed this one but you should also do a "plants I will repurchase no matter how many times I kill it" aglaonema camoflauge is one of those for me. My no rebuy list: caladiums & (most) calathea.
the scecret for frydeks for me was Cal-Mag. Alocasias kill off their old leaves to gain calcium and magnesium so supplimenting these into the feed will allow alocasia to grow bigger and bushier!
I got a black velvet alocasia without knowing about the leaf cycle. I started with 3 leaves. Then, one died and I was devastated. Until…a larger one grew in its place! So, I think I’ve cycled through those original 3 since I now have 4 larger leaves. I noticed a 5th one coming in this week. We’ll see what happens! 🤞🏾
My foxtail Fern is hanging from ceiling in a corner by the window and about 6 feet long and 7 feet wide. I'm in a one bedroom apartment 😂😂😂 When you love something let it GROW 😍🥰
coming from an indoor desert grower i can tell the problem with most of your nogo selection comes from not having the humid and breezy conditions to get big and colorful. its tough out here in these dry places to get big colorful house plants
I hear you Harli on Alocasia's. I used to have big full lush Black Velvet, Polly, and Bambino. Then I guess they heard me bragging and decided to brown their leaves and go dormant. Next for me would be Peperomia's. I LOVE the leaves on the Watermelon, the Purple ripple, the Green, and variegated. But they don't like me, and Aglaonema's hate me too. 🤷🏽♀
Another person on RU-vid has peperomias and he mentioned that he always bottom waters because the stems are so delicate it’s easy to rot them with sitting water in them. I’ve kept 3 alive so far(knock on wood) and now that it’s spring I’m hoping for more growth.
My subhastum only likes to grow outside with a rediculous amount of humidity. My aglonema in clay pots that I often forget about and water when wilty do better then any in plastic that I baby.
Yeah. I’m looking at my one leafed Frydek. Honestly, I’d like the space for a different plant, but I do love the one leaf and it’s very much not dead and I also feel like we’ve been through so much together that I don’t want to give it away. But….if it died, I know where my new Clarinervium would go!
My caladiums are my outside plants. I mean i’m in Florida so it’s easy but i just let them die and then i start super watering them in spring and they are back in no time. Very cute and super low maintenance!
2:35 I have found that aglaonema prefer to have their soil dry out quite a bit before being watered. And although most sources say it’s low light, I have noticed that mine prefer medium bright light.
Yes on the hoya Burt! I always neglect it and always with the damn blooms! 😭 No cissus discolor for me. I love them but can’t keep them alive. No to any plants that have to live in a cabinet to survive.
Harli, Agloenemas thrive so well in West Africa, especially the humid parts. So it’s a humid loving plant. Caladiums don’t go into dormancy in the tropics.
Ok. But I’ve never seen that, maybe the ones I’ve seen are in cycles, so when one is dormant another is not. I actually I don’t keep any but I lived in a house where there were some.
As a hoya collector I'm shocked. I dont think I've ever heard anyone get tired of how much their Hoyas bloom lol. Especially my Burtoniae, shes been in bloom since last year and I absolutely love it and love smelling it. I do agree with Caladiums I cant deal with anything that has bulbs! Sucks because I absolutely love Caladiums and I've never gotten into Alocasias they're way too disappointing to keep. I'm honestly done with Monstera, string of ANYTHING, All Agleonemas , all palms , Hate Diffenbachias and all Syngonium and if I had to pick any hoya I'd never purchase again it would be the Compacta. Hell no, I'm done for good. Ok I think I'm done lmao
@@sandylizbeth2900 lmao I like a select few of philos , a few calathea, love pothos , I love Anthurium, I enjoy peperomia and ferns (but know which ones to buy now) and Im a huge begonia lover but mainly my collection is 80% hoya. I didnt want to say hate when naming these plants but after so many times buying them and killing them for who knows what reason..🙄 I can honestly say me and these plants are officially beefed out now.
@@gygaxx69 Did you not read above? Yall act like the ones I named are all that's out here.... Like I said I know what I like and I only buy what I like. I dont know about any of you but I dont like to waste money and dont buy things just because of hype or look they have to fit my environment and not be a mental drain to keep happy so if that only limits me to a few...oh well 🤷🏻♀️
If you were to decide to get rid of your variegated Burle Marx, I would be very interested…this is one of my favorite. I have a baby in my greenhouse right now and I get so excited to see it’s new leaves.
I bought a pineapple plant, it was over halfway grown. So exciting. Didn’t realize it was infested with mealy bugs due to them hiding in the pineapple stem… I always blindly trust nurseries. But eventually I noticed the leaves were completely covered in mealy sap and I started wondering what the little cotton fluffs were. I ended up losing almost half of my “exotic” plant collection 😢
My mom loves african violets and I gave her my dying orchid and started that addiction too lol i think violets are fussy with light and watering. The instructions on orchids from store are just wrong and need better soil to drain.
I guess the losing leaves thing is normal for younger alocasias. Until it matures it kills the oldest littlest leaf to make way to support the newer one. Super frustrating though!
The Frydek does better outdoors, at least mine did. I also struggled with it having two leaves for a while so in the summer I put it out and it grew so many leaves. It even got used to full sun and was very happy. This winter I had to bring it back in and the leaves have slowly been dying but I will put it out again when it gets warmer.
Mine is exactly the same. It thrives all summer then hangs on for dear life throughout the winter. I can’t wait to get it back outside. My Alocasia Polly is the same. Struggle buss all winter then dozens of head sized leaves all summer 😅
I have the shrub version of the asparagus fern outside. It's in a huge pot and the leaves are 3-4ft long and it constantly puts out more. It does very well with morning sun and dappled shade the rest of the day in Tucson, AZ.
I don’t want to deal with monster plants. They always look messy. I prefer more structured plants. I don’t like plants I have to fight. I was always fighting those vining plants. No moss poles for me. Stand alone and be a strong plant is the right plant for me.
@@lorineilly6103 😂😂 this made me chuckle. My largest monstera is always an experience when it comes to watering. You’re spot on about the monster nature, but I’m a sucker for those leaves.
100% agree on the alocasia frydek. for me, the whole royal family of philodendrons will not be repurchased when (not if) they finally die. I just have to come to terms with the low humidity in our household. Also, funnily enough, some plants just don't want to live. I used to think monstera are thrips magnets but for some reason my albo is the least problematic plant I have at the moment whereas my green ones all .. passed on to even greener pastures😅
My most hated plant, and the one I gave up on the fastest by far, are crotons 😅 I've had 2 of them and they got so ugly so quickly, dropping leaves and attracting so many pests. I basically immediately see them all as gross now because all I can picture is the smelly, infested sticks that they'll likely become under my care.
Hi Harli on a previous video you were talking about Maiden Hair ferns and being difficult to grow. The secret is Epsom Salts. They like more light and fertilizer than you would think and of course no drafts. Love your personality and love of plants. regards from New Zealand.
I’m letting my alocasias live for as long as they’d like to but once they go I’m not replacing them. I adore them… but not the spider mites that come with them.
Yes, on the crotons. I think they just need more light than they can get in most houses. I had one that survived for a few years but looked stupid because it kept loosing leaves. I was almost relieved when it kept getting spider mites, because it gave me an excuse to throw it out.
@@cindyvan635 yes, I've seen them in landscaping in Florida, too. I don't even know why they sell them in the North. Us poor saps buy them because they're pretty just to watch them lose leaves constantly.
I will never buy a Syngonium, sorry, again. We do not get along, they are beautiful but I just can't. My aunt is the Hoya queen and she says they will not bloom unless their roots are crowded in the Planter so try up potting the Bert into a larger Planter and maybe it will stop blooming for now. Love the video's
I agree with all of them mine are probably ANY kinds of pointy cactus because I love to feel my plants and i just dread the re potting of them and they are just to easy like no watering I like to have to look after them but them not being to hard to care for. I find my fox tail fern does really well in terrarium's they grow really well and It doesn't get everywhere and when its getting to big I just trim it back .
My mom has been keeping crotons and ferns alive together in the same pot without any soil change for 15 years. No humidity, just a lot of light and she fertilizes the crap out of them lol. She constantly has to cut them back because of how big they grow for her. So maybe light and fertilizer is the answer.
For me the plant I'll never buy or try again is the begonia Rex. I can't keep that plant alive to save my life. No matter what I did it just did not work. I tryed it twice and they both died lol
Why don't you try Cane Begonia for a change? Unlike the Rex, Cane is much easier to care for as long as they are provided with a slightly higher humidity ☺️
Definitely any ferns that are not the blue star fern. They just seem like a lot a drama and don't even want to try to much with them. Even though they are literally everywhere where I live.
I live in CO where it’s really dry, and I just cannot keep any ferns, calatheas, zebra plants, crotons, or begonias in my house, even with humidifiers. They have all perished unfortunately, so I’ve learned this the hard way. I did not have the same problems when I lived on the east coast. I’m sticking to plants that don’t require as much humidity (at least for now, unless I get a greenhouse or something lol).
I would put your philodendrons on a moss pole. I've just recently discovered that most of my trouble plants do better on a moss pole. I just found your channel so I'm not sure if you have already tried this or not.
I'm done with nerve plants, polka dot plants, and marantas - they all look cool but need way more water and humidity than I care to provide! I've been nursing an alocasia silver dragon back to health after its leaves got all crispy on me, but I killed one I grew from a corm and probably won't try any other alocasias, as pretty as they are.
Mine are tradescantia, alocasia of any type except my huge regal shield, which was the most expensive plant I’ve ever bought! Others include string of turtles and s.o. Dolphins-nope. I have had a lot of problems with bear paw plants, but I now have 2 that are thriving with utter neglect-don’t water them until critical dryness has been my success. There are more, but that’s it for now. Thank you Harli for such great videos and information-I greatly appreciate your knowledge!
I have also a philodendron subhastatum for almost 3 years now. Received it as a small tiny baby cutting. At first it grew like crazy. Than it slowly started to dye back. In the beginning I gave it too much love and too much water. I learned to let it be. Less water, less to almost no fertilizer. Close to the window, but not too bright. Now it is thriving and the colors are bright and vibrant. Since I put it on a higher stand it even grows faster. It constantly gives me new leaves. It is a diva and wants to be on top of everyone. Pretty happy with it. I hope yours will also start thriving again. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏻🪴
I LOVED aglaonemas.. they were my favorite for a while.. and just like you said, they start to drop leaves then boom! Just a couple of sticks in a pot are left. So sad. I loved my chocolate aglaonema.. but it's barely alive now.
Just found your channel! I almost purchased a Lickety Split recently. Thrips? 😮 I would die if my other plants got infested! For me, I will never buy another Fittonia, Aglaonema Siam, succulents, and ferns of any kind. Killed the Fittonia on purpose. Neediest plant I've ever owned! 🙄 The Siam keeps dropping leaves. I'm going to try to reroot a cutting to see if I can make it look better. Succulents are dead in my hands. Maybe not enough light in my house? I've never kept a fern happy. They turn brown in the center and look awful. Peace Lily used to be on my no list until I bought a really big one. Now it's my favorite plant!! I love most philodendrons too. I'm trying a Begonia Rex. Let's see if I kill that! You made me feel better about not succeeding with certain plants. Thank you!
Omg no more crotons for winter in my house. Mine was so pretty and did amazing when I got it in the summer brought it in lasted maybe a month and just started dropping those leaves like its hot lol
I feel like aglaonema need high humidity. I can't keep them alive here in Canada, but they always were easy to care for in my home country. It's sad because I really love how they look and how they easily fill up a space. 🙃
Here in Maryland, croton are a huge part of most people’s landscaping, they are everywhere! I would never bring one in either…they can stay outside 😅 they just need way too much humidity
I don't do well with Peperomia, that includes string of anything haha. Also started branching out to Begonias but killed them too. Maybe I was too young of a plant parent but I just don't want to risk the heart break again. Caladiums make me sad and I love Alocasia so my Frydek is coming out of dormancy right now and its beautiful but my silver dragon and black velvet died :( Also Philodendron Pink Princess....Maybe I have a dud but it only has 1 pink variegated leaf.....so annoying
For the foxtail fern.. what if you put it up above the shower on a shelf and when it's needle/frond things fall you can just wash em down the drain? Plus the humidity will keep it happy
I have one plant on my list atm and it’s a philodendron brasil. I’ve tried twice with this plant and I can not get it to live in leca. If I were to try again, I would just keep it in soil. Honestly tho, at this point I’m just kinda over the philodendron brasil. They’re are so many other options for trailing plants and I would prefer to replace it with some type of Hoya.
One thing about aglaonema...they hate to be fertilized. My silver bay has been in its pot for over a year. It grew all winter like crazy. So spring came and I thought okay I'll give it some fertilize. It pouted for days. It hated it and I wondered if I had killed it but it survived. I don't intend to fertilize it unless it is just slow release in the soil.
My Aglaonema loves to be on the dry side. They can't handle very dry soil like snake plants could but definitely love dry soil drier than Syngonium plants.
The aglaonema modestum is, well, modest and classic. Its very, very easy to take care of. It takes a real beating. A week without water in the hot hot summer does almost nothing, it just wilts. Sunlight wise, very tolerant of low light, a great green filler plant for a corner. You can also very very easily grow it in water.
Harli please reconsider the frydek, it's such a gorgeous plant. The leaves are one of a kind! I have mine growing in leca at the moment and it's loving it on it's 7th leaf next to an East window. Ambient Utah air! I'm sure you'd love it if you gave it another shot, in the way way future when you are ready! 😜💙
I have a family friend who has a beautiful, ancient hoya and she strung it up so it's trailing over her claw-foot bathtub to catch all the sap. Just an idea! Hang over sinks, tubs, showers to reduce the mess?
Syngonium - I always end up killing them, even though they are supposedly unkillable x) Monstera adansonii but probably all Monstera - thrips magnet/s Hoya retusa and Hoya linearis - can't tell when they are happy and when they aren't
Hi Harley!!! I love all of your videos , you have inspired me to propagate (which I love doing) and sell some plants on Facebook marketplace. I actually came across a video the other day and the person said some plants are patented and you can not propagate and sell them so I researched and it is true. I had some Manjula pothos almost ready and I had just done another propagation box with some more and then found this out. It was surprising to me. So anyway I was wondering if you look up to see if the plants you sell are not patent and where you find this information? I have looked but honestly it gets a little confusing and I was hoping for a sight that was easy to read where they have all of this information. Thank you in advance!!! Love you!!!💕🥰
Had this same issue, and then I got a free sample of BIOS fertilizer and threw a little in, and within a week, I dont recognize this fast growing plant. Is this even my plant?
Some on my not again list are: Spider plants, most Calethias, most Alocasia, Crotons, Caladium, Cissus, Dieffenbachia, Begonias, Poka Dot plants, String of..., Asparagus ferns, and Ivy. A plant that I will probably keep buying no matter how many times I kill it is the Maidenhair fern, sigh.
I don’t like aloe plants.part gets big and falls out of pot and part gets flat. I get frustrated watering. Also will never have another spider plant;the leaves turn brown at base. I have tried different ways to water. Do we’ll with all other plants
Hi. About this aglaonema i got it. And maybe you have troble with it doe to the clime there and same with the caladium... Here in DR It's easy to care..about this pholodendrum you're ,i'm agree with you. A big hug. Was a pleasure meet you. You look so nice💜👍
I find aglaonemas to be difficult to keep happy, too. The silver bay variety is enough, but I have a really hard time keeping the variegated varieties alive.
The Hoya Burtoniae is hilarious. So many of us just want our hoyas to bloom and they don't! LOL. Mine are no more alocasias. I just do everything for them and can't keep them happy. Back to Hoyas, I have a curtisii that's very cute but it just always seems on the verge of death, no matter what I do. So yeah, no more of that one if this one doesn't make it.
I have the same problem with the Aglaonema Anyamanee Tricolor. I got one after seeing it in your Houseplants You Might Not Know About 2022 video. I was in South Florida at the time and it was on an east-facing screened-in balcony; very high humidity all the time; I think I was careful with the light, but it was just very unhappy and I gave it away. I moved to another state and got another one last summer. It's indoors by a north-facing window but also near a grow light and a humidifier. I cannot figure out what it wants. The prettiest leaves are the deep-colored ones, but they don't stay that way; the leaves either come in sort of faded-looking or they turn that way and eventually die, although it continues to put out new growth. I have an Aglaonema Red Emerald that is so easy, just grows and grows and is quite beautiful. But the Anyamanee, I just can't figure out what it wants.
I will never buy another peace Lilly. They're beautiful, but I always have an issue with brown edges. Any plant I've had that has died twice in my care, or sometimes even once, I wouldn't buy again
Omg the philo branti !! I just hate the small leaves. Hate hate dieff’s they only give me 2 leaves at a time😅 I don’t love any philo that grow up, I love trailers
I won’t buy a philodendron montrose again. They are cute when small, but then they need a trellis or pole and become too big of a hassle. I’ll enjoy them from afar.
Oh yes, the hoyas certainly can have a strong scent! I have a nummeroides that smells HORRIBLE. I keep mine outside but had to bring one in for a hurricane, and I couldn't stand it.
I have been struggling with two plants. First is Geogenanthus ciliatus, the one with glossy dark leaves. It does not want to grow neither in terrarium or open air. The second is Philodendron grazielae. It's leaves are hard to unfurl and getting smaller and smaller. Right now I have a "take three" on both.
When you said Alocasia Frydek, my poor heart couldn’t take it 😭😭 that plant was my absolute pride and joy, took it all the way from a leafless stump to 8 giant leaves!! UNTIL, my lickety split gave it thrip and it died 😢 legit got out of plants after that and swore not to really get back into them until I found a frydek… which I just so happened to today after a year and a half🙊 I found it did really well in a hybrid soil-leca setup with really high humidity. Would never get a lickety split ever again bc of the pest issues
Probably won’t buy another pink princess. Leaves get sucks and the variegation is unstable. Also, creeping fig… it sheds and currently in my garbage after I under-watered.
I struggle with crotons. I actually just gave my aunt my last one (the lone survivor of me) and it seems do like her better. I have tried so many times because of the colors in them. They just die on me.
I've had a problem with Aglonema also. I currently have one, however I am rolling the dice on how long it will last. It is doing well now however the last few times was the same way it really did excellent and then just started dying back. So we shall see. Most plant people say never, however I bet you will try again because it is the challenge!
I water mine about once a month and I have 5 of them and they are all in different lighting conditions, some VERY dark, the humidity is average. So I guess just adjust the watering and see how things go!!!❤
Hey Doll! Was wondering, could we get an updated on your Ikea Cabinet plant setup? Was going to do it next month and was looking for some tips and tricks for the future im in for :) Thanks!
any calathea, alocasia for quite a while, figs, and i need to stop buying adansonii because ive bought 5 different ones and killed them every time i dont know how or why no matter what i do 😅
Hi Harli. I watch you all the time but I have never messaged you. I think your RU-vid videos are great. As I get older I have less patience and will click right passed you if you bore me. Lol probably missing out on good plant content but there it is. I had to retire early and my children are all grown so I have wanted to really test myself and get my wishlist plants. I have 15 coming from Indonesia ( which I will visit someday) and I am really worried. Living in Ohio there's not much chance I can create their total environment. I waited till spring to really kick off my shopping. I have alot of plants you find everywhere but there's alot in this order I have been dying to see in person. Anyhow I will try not to take up much time so one was question for today? I thought liquid dirt was expensive but you were using it. Are you still into liquid dirt? I was busy but trying to listen and thought I heard you say you were not using it still. It's been a while.?
#4 loves lots of sun. Mine are happy in my S window, sitting on top of a shelf on radiator, watering every 2wks or so, never leaving water in its saucer
