The “Bayou City” or “Space City” or “Htown” (whatever you want to call it) has a ton of really fun things to do.
More than any other Texas city, Houston breaks itself up into smaller pieces by districts and neighborhoods. I decided to spend my day in Houston by daytripping to some of my favorites. Now, I have a ton of favorite, but I narrowed it down to three districts. Here we go!
In the heart of Houston is the Museum District, which contains 19 museums and is oozing with culture. If you only have time for one, make it the Houston Museum of Natural Science with incredible exhibits on Paleontology (think dinosaurs with a lot more), Egypt (yes they have mummies), gems, malacology, butterflies and tons more. You could literally make an entire day trip out of this museum.
You could literally make an entire day trip out of this museum. If art is more your speed, then you shouldn’t miss The Menil Collection, a free museum that is surely one of the best art museums in America. You can see Picasso, Warhol, McGrit and many more legendary artists all under one roof.
In Chinatown, you’ll find one of the largest Asian populations in America, and it’s much more diverse than just Chinese residents. I love it because it truly feels like a trip overseas without leaving Texas. I always like popping into HK Food Market for a shopping experience very different from my normal trips to the store. The fresh fish counter is something to behold. This spot is guaranteed to make you hungry, so head on over to HK Dim Sum where you can eat some of the tastiest “dim sum” that I’ve ever had. It’s basically like a full meal of appetizers.
Unfortunately, El Real Tex-Mex has permanently closed since filming.
To get some fresh air while learning all there is to learn in the Museum District head to this park. It’s the central hub of the district, which basically makes it Houston’s Central Park. Folks come out here to picnic, ride pedal boats, see the Japanese Gardens, go to the Houston Zoo and roll down Miller Hill.

Too bad many of the places visited in this episode are closed now… I’m a Houstonian and miss them, too! I just wish an episode posted today would have been more up to date.

Indeed he has, I appreciate what he does as he’s turned me on to a few new places. I simply stated for a video posted yesterday, I would have liked it to be more up to date. I do not discount what he does, he’s amazing. My comment was to state I would have preferred a more up to date video and also let folk know who may be coming to Houston and looking for these places know, they’re closed.

El Real Tex Mex is no longer there. It is now the famous Acme Oyster House out of New Orleans. Next door you can find some of the best Sichuan cuisine at Mala Bistro.

I'm glad you included The Menil Collection, which is my favourite place in all of Houston. The De Menils collected pieces they loved, so they have a very eclectic museum covering everything from ancient Greek and Roman artifacts to contemporary works by Cy Twombly, Dan Flavin, Mark Rothko and others. The museum is composed of several separate gallery spaces, two of which were designed by the notable Italian architect Renzo Piano. Dominique and John De Menil came to Houston in the 1950s where they both worked as executives for Schlumberger, the oil refinery equipment manufacturer. Their own home, designed by Philip Johnson, is located in River Oaks.

I am so glad this is all coming out on RU-vid. I'm reliving the memories and watching everything it throws at me. Such a fun, educational and inspirational show. Nothing like hitting the El Real Margarita Happy Hour or Anvil top 100 cocktail Happy Hour, then heading over to Hay Merchant for some more Happy Hour craft beers and excellent food from the kitchen of Underbelly. I'm so sad to see that it's closed after looking it up after this episode!

My wife and I met at El Real. Brings back memories. It closed about a year later though. The news said the owner wasn’t paying employees anymore or something. I guess business got slow. We moved out of Houston since then to a smaller city. Much happier lives now with no traffic and less stress and flooding although we do go visit family there.

I'm from the Houston area, and I love it here. The one thing I'm so tired of, is Tex-Mex. They are all the same menus and tastes. I want the real, down home type of Mexican food. The Sunday type meal that was served my Mexican mothers. I know of one place in Texas, up in the Texoma area. He makes dishes his mother made growing up. Not just Tex-Mex.

Dude... the Hong Kong City Mall is mostly Vietnamese shops and restaurants..... not Chinese... but I guess all Asians look alike~~~
@scottpetty4568
@scottpetty4568 11 месяцев назад
Yeah...the Vietnamese business cluster in Houston (possibly the biggest in America) gets called Chinatown by Greater Austin PBS instead of Little Saigon. But calling the focal point Hong Kong City Mall in deference to expected ignorance just plays into perpetuating it. Classic King of the Hill bit: "So are you Chinese or Japanese?" "I live in California for the last 20 years, but first come from Loas." "Huh?" "Laos. We Laotian." "The ocean? What ocean?" "We are Laotian. From Laos, stupid. It's a landlocked country in Southeast Asia between Vietnam and Thailand, ok? Population 4.7 million." "So are you Chinese or Japanese?"
