Nice! My brother and I used to fish for alligator, long nose, and spotted gar now and then, back in the ‘70’. At the time, we’d never heard of anyone eating them, we just fished them for the fight. Stay Safe!

Thanks, they are really fun. We got on some spotted gar but I didn't record any of that. They are high up the food chain so I wouldn't eat too much of them.

Thanks. I highly recommend gar trips. If you were only going to go on 2 fishing trips in your life this would be one. The other would be white sturgeon.

What an awesome bucket list fish… I’d love to spend some time fishing down in that part of the country. I wonder if more of a wire leader mooching rig setup would help with hook sets and placement.

I would highly recommend it and will probably go back next summer for some big ones. The mooching rig wouldn't work because they drop the bait if they feel tension. You need a running rig. Mostly people use treble or circle hooks for these.

I think they do have limits on them now because of bowfishermen just killing them for no reason. Not many people eat these since they are high up the food chain and full of toxins. They're also tough to fillet because of the armor plating. That said I've heard gar balls are pretty good.
