Houston vs Austin is a frequent question that we face here at The Living In Houston Texas Team. Luckily, I happen to be an expert in both cities. Having lived in Austin and Houston both, this videos dives into some of the major differences between these two Texas cities. Houston is the larger of the two cities. It is a more coastal / tropical climate, while Austin is a more arid desert climate. Both offer fun nightlife and constant events. They have different vibes. Houston wins when it comes to housing affordability. Austin wins with slightly more appealing geography. Houston offers more in the form of professional sports teams. Austin offers more in terms of art / music / film events. Reach out for further questions about these two awesome Texas cities. Houston vs Austin.

Austin Native. Yes, if you are from California, Austin is affordable, but for every one else be prepared for the shock of the cost of rent/mortgage. As a native, I was forced to move to Elgin because Californians bought up all home inventory causing natives of Austin to flee into Travis County. ( extreme Travis county boundary) Austin was not built for all this new growth; hence, traffic is awful. I live 25 miles outside of Austin but it can take over an hour to commute into Austin because of overcrowding. The public school system is NOT good in Austin unless you live in the very expensive zip codes. I hate to bring this up but Austin is not diverse ( I am a AA) if you are a POC then Houston has more cultural spaces for POC’s. He is correct Austin is not family friendly and no “ real” water 💦 attraction. Austin doesn’t have much for families, but offers a lot of events for adults ( Dont be surprised if you see homeless people on every corner, under bridges, and homeless camps behind strip malls in the green belts) In summary, my hometown of Austin, is best for people who are young Caucasians with no kids. It is expensive to live in Austin ( expect for deep pockets Californians); thus, be sure to already have an job offer and an network system because housing is hard to obtain in the actual city. Hence. I moved to Elgin ( just outside of Austin) in 2007, my home value has quadrupled. Oh yeah Austin pubic transit is almost non existent.

Fellow Elginite! I grew up there. Crazy how much it changed in cost and the effects of the surrounding area now. I live around Houston now. It’s much more affordable.

Austin is 30% Hispanic and 9% Asian, is that not diverse... It's not like 90% White or whatever. The word "diversity" is a loaded politically correct term anyway. D itself is not a good or bad thing, it's just the way things are depending on many factors. Btw you never hear people complaining that the NBA is not "Diverse" enough lol. That being said yes obviously people from same culture want to live closer together, so if that's your deal... Look at California its a paradise for Asians. St Louis for Poc. After all texas will always be heavily latino. Austin will always be major spot for white hipsters and tech people.

I like both also but Austin can’t compare to Houston’s museum and performing arts scene. Great vid!
@luxconcept

Very true. I studied art at UT Austin and there's not really like a major art museum in Austin. The blanton, the contemporary, umlauf are good options but houston has an amazing arts scene.We have the theatre district, incredible symphony, ballets, plays, and we have the sports for people who like it. Other than Houston being ugly and flat and not having pretty water like Austin, it's got a lot going for it!

Houston native now living in Austin. We left Houston because the air is highly toxic. And I don't mean that lightly. It's a serious issue/elephant in the room that's kinda brushed over as meh it's just a lil smog. The petrochemical industries there among others contribute to this issue. Aside from that Houston's a pretty good city. I like the Katy area for schools and homes however Austin is one of the sweetest spots in the country and now the secret is out unfortunately. Austin's geography is stunning, the weather is 100000x better than Houston. It's like being in San Diego. The people here are SO much nicer. The drivers here a kind and will wave you in to get over in front of them. I've experienced so many random acts of kindness here that I never experienced living in Houston my entire life. There are things to do galore in the suburbs of Austin that's very family friendly and the options are endless. My husband and I are thrilled about our move here. The homes are pricey but my goodness it's worth it!

Love this one! Left Austin 5 years ago and we’re looking at the suburbs of Houston. We want a family friendly area, with great schools. I loved Austin, but it was too hipster dufus in town. Going to check out a few areas based off your videos…thanks again

In my opinion, you do not wanna move to the Houston suburbs. It's a whole lot of nothing. If you're looking for more family-oriented areas try somewhere by bus routes and NOT 5th ward. Heights is a big family neighborhood that's but is also pretty pricey (500k at the cheapest).

If you’re a teacher, Austin’s pay isn’t good. If you’re not changing your career anytime soon and want a bigger paycheck (by education standards), then Houston is the place to go.

austin used to be weird because all of the state's rejects would move there from the country towns they didn't really fit in, so it sucks when californians move here and make everyone feel like shit for being different or uncool when that's what everyone moved to austin to escape.

Which city is better for cycling?
@livinginhtx
@livinginhtx Год назад
Good question, not sure in the cities but Austin has great cycling if you like hills in the hill country, and north Houston has good cycling up in the national forest
@asrr62
@asrr62 Год назад
houston cause its flat. when i would bike in austin: be prepared to go 30 mph downhill and try to keep speed and momentum for the torturous hill climb. you can zig zag across the entire width of the street to make it easier to hill climb. lol yeah you can tell ive only biked in austin. ideally get on a bike go downhill and have a friend pick you up at the bottom to take you back to the top of the hill.. lol austin has the best mountain biking though you can get though.

You left out what, at least IMO, is the most significant difference. Houston is super diverse. People from all over the world go there in droves and all races and cultures are strongly represented. Austin isn't very diverse though its getting better. Also, Houston has a very international culture. Austin has more of a regional culture. Houston's growth depends largely on people moving from outside the US, Austin's depends on people moving from other parts of the US.

Love Houston for more diverse restaurants! It's also got more of a Bible best, more conservative more Christian orientation. Preferring those kinds of people as I mature in age.
@Mita7401
@Mita7401 11 месяцев назад
Same! That’s actually one of the first things I looked up. Where is it more conservative. I’ve found in life we have to be more detailed about where we want to live. Can’t just be a city. WHERE in that city is the true question lol. I hate that realtors can’t really talk about conservative or liberal when it comes to buying housing because value systems do matter when your talking 30 year or more mortgages. I’m not trying to be miserable!
