How 5 African Countries ended up with the same National Anthem

Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, South and Tanzania at one time were using the same national anthem, Nkosi sikelel iAfrica by Enoch Sontongo, this is a critical part of South African history and the history of national anthems on the African continent.
The national anthems were sung during the independence of Tanganyika now modern day tanzania, and Kenneth Kaunda's Zambia independence, as well as namibia independence day celebrations, and Nelson Mandela independence of South Africa, Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica is one of the best national anthems on the African continent.

We sang this hymn in my school choir in 1993 in an Afrikaans school in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It was the original isiXhosa version sang with a white accent!

I really appreciate this presentation, because I was trying to listen to every national anthem in the world and had grown very confused when I came to southern Africa! Several anthems sounded slightly different, yet remarkably alike. Now I know my eardrums are not melting! Fortunately this is a beautiful melody, with supportive, concordant harmonies.

I just love how our pan African leaders loved one another. I'm so proud of the father of my nation Julius Nyerere for the love he had for Africa. He loved Africa more than anything. He could not have peace untill the whole of Africa was liberated. Thats why the western media never portrayed him as a hero !!🙄 Todays youth knows nothing about Keneth Kaunda, Mugabe, Samora Machel, Kwame Nkrumah etc...Much love from Tanzania🇹🇿🇹🇿🇹🇿❤❤

The Zimbabwean new national anthem is actually called Ngaikomborerwe Nyika NyeZimbabwe,It's a popular mistake to call it Simudzai Mureza after the first lyric

The first title is a translation of Nkosi sikelela iAfrica, not original. Simudzai Mureza is a better title.

As an American this anthem brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it, and I haven't been the same since. It has an indescribable power that fills me with sadness, defiance and pride all at the same time. It's one of the reasons why visiting South Africa is VERY HIGH on my list of important things to do.

I had to educate myself about the true history of South Africa and its neighbours. I have Zimbabwean colleagues and really love learning more about their country's history and culture.

As a South African, I feel _no_ pride for Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. How can you be proud of an anthem that you share with other countries? It broadcasts a total lack of creativity and originality to the entire world. We should've stuck to Die Stem. There is nothing political or hateful about that song. It's words sings about the beauty of the country and our dedication to it, and its melody was beautiful. Now we have this Frankenstein cut-and-paste anthem that massacre both songs.

Firstly, Sontonga was not Xhosa. He was a Mpondomise and remains so, but I can't blame you, many are misled with this mega-tribe thing because we share the same language. It is not 'die' as in pass away, the word is the Afrikaans cognate to the English 'the' and is pronounced more like "D", the letter.

Lol dude did you write all of this about Sontonga not being Xhosa to sound smart?? Does it even matter? AmaMpondomise are a subgroup of the Xhosa people anyway you don’t have to be political! Enoch Sontonga is not even Mpondomise he’s from the AmaMpinga clan in other words nguMthembu or LiHlubi. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Also, just because AmaMpondomise have their own Kingship doesn’t mean they’re not a subgroup yamaXhosa. AmaMpondomise a subgroup of the Xhosa people just like Mfengu, Mpondo, Thembu, Xesibe etc. Get your facts straight!

@@makerkandike9810 The song was sung on the first day of Namibian Independence, and even the lyrics are still sung with the SWAPO PARTY Anthem, it is a fact and historical, that those countries share common goals in their resistance against the colonial occupation as well the racial discrimination by white minority during those years.

That's because the other countries were not so patriotic which is why they copied South Africa's anthem. Zimbabwe had a lot of talented singers in the 1980s. Chinx had a great song (Vanhu vemu Africa) which could have been used. Even Bob Marley's Zimbabwe song could have been adopted as an anthem for a new Zimbabwe. There is no excuse for using another country's anthem other than laziness, lack of creativity, originality and patriotism. South Africans have always been patriotic and creative. Other countries, not so.
