Well if it even turns when back in the engine, it will certainly totally wreck the rest of the engine when the out of balance crank flys apart, should be spectacular.
The main and rod journals have weld splatter on them and the crank seal surface is out at least .005 and the "machinist" gives it a thumbs up? CLICKBAIT.
These men are skilled in the trades and a disappearing art in this country. I can guarantee this marvelous repair lasted about instantly, or the mathematics indicates so.
Just look at the state of the bearing surfaces! They might as well use an angle grinder on them to remove the weld splatter. I give it 5 minute of running before it falls apart and knocks a huge hole in the crankcase.
Why so negative? Go to Pakistan and the like and see for yourself! the ingenuity "necessity is the mother of all inventions" is mind-boggling. I've seen such with my own eyes. Low rpm is certainly a major factor for the survival of the repair. One of the most astonishing repairs I ever witnessed was a long time ago when one could still drive without danger from Europe to Saudi Arabia or North Africa. The father of a friend of mine had driven to Africa when one of the journal bearings of the crankshaft gave out. No way to get replacement parts, or have machining equipment/repair shop. A "village mechanic" with lots of ingenuity repaired it! He saw that the owner of the vehicle had a thick leather belt and pointed to him that he needs for the repair the leather belt. I saw the pictures. What he did was cut out of the leather a piece the size and dimensions of the Journal bearing. Soaked it in oil for a couple of days and then began two assemble the engine. tightened the bearing caps and waited a couple of days, each day turning a crankshaft a little bit. Took it out again slightly sanded off a little bit of the by now all soaked and compressed leather in the assembly again until the crankshaft turned reasonably well. It worked. The man actually drove back to Europe and then still drove around for a couple years until he junked the car. Out of curiosity the engine was taken apart and indeed one journal was an old by now blackened and hard piece of leather. The crankshaft journal was polished like a mirror! of course you need to know that this was an old four-cylinder engine with a redline of 3400 RPM and about 60 hp that barely got briefly Rev. over 2000RPM ever. That's why this actually worked.
It's hard to tell but there's between 5 and 10 thou of run out, the big end journal is trashed and it wasn't re balanced. But I guess it will last just long enough to get the truck sold.
Impressive?....no, it's sad to see that some parts of the world have miserably failed to keep up with basic advancements in engineering, manufacturing, overall technological understanding....the list goes on and on. Yep, they make do,...and do well on getting by. Can't dispute that. It's still sad to see such struggle in this day and age.
Ingenious repair, now the crank needs to be re-tempered if even possible, then turn it, balance it and even then probably wouldn’t last. However when you don’t know better or have replacement parts try anything to make it work. Here in North America the crank would be replaced with a good used or new one.
Not a real repair by the stretch of the imagination, I especially liked when he torqued down the 4-jaw chuck on the bearing surface, entertaining though.
What I find interesting and I never have seen before is the detachable counterweights, the latter not being part of the whole cast of the crankshaft. Must have to do that this crankshaft is being used with different cylinder sizes and displacement sizes.
How accurate can that lathe be if it’s sitting on a dirt floor? And what’s the deal with all the bolt on counterweights? Those deep threaded holes can’t be doing it any good as far as strength is concerned.
Nope, they haven't similar repairs. This crankshaft will not work. Video is shoot for youtube only - actually they will earn more money doing videos like this, than if they do real repairs for small payment.
Exactly, this crankshaft wouldn't last for long in an engine. Why they even painted the crankshaft, or what ever this was? I would be covered in oil anyway if this was ever installed in an engine :D
maybe it is a farm tractor crank.. and that is all the farmer was willing to put into this repair.. Better run it at less than half speed and maybe it will get another 2000 hours.
I admit, after reading the comments, I was much fooled. I had been impressed. Now, I don't know what to believe. Why wouldn't a real job be made into a video instead of a click-bait ?
The cardboard trick makes them very professional and the jerky drill more accurate! What a waste of time, energie and material! What a purpose has this video?
