A young one running an old unit, and is well versed in how it works is a rare thing now. I hope his custom operation works out for him, his knowledge of his machine and his drive to make it successful is a great thing!

It’s nice seeing that a person is willing to take the time to share their experiences with running the older equipment no matter what brand it is

Wow. I sold those machines when they first came out. They were so far ahead of everything on the market. I didn't hear what year model this machine was but they were introduced in 1977. Quite a legacy. Nice to see this young man owning and operating a machine that might be as old or older than himself. What a testament to the machine. Oh and the new series 9 of the same machine is just a fantastic unit. When you see a 40- 50 foot header operating at an unbelievable speed it just makes you appreciate the advancements that have been made. This is what has made the American farmers the BEST. Hard to beat. Thanks for the time you took to make the video. Congratulations 😊 0:14

Great video Aaron and thanks for the run through Matt. I like these older machines and it looks like it was well taken care of too. God bless and be safe

I think there are some areas where a guy could have a good side business doing custom harvesting with older equipment where you could be set up to run four row wide, four row narrow or six row as well as small grain and beans for smaller operations like mine that can't really justify the cost or the time of owning a combine.

Rocking a John Deere 45 with 210 two row head, IH 656, and AC WD-45 down here in Highland WI! My first year farming and its been a lot of fun learning how to tune in these older machines and get through the brake downs. I didn't think about the side hill issues and that explains why I loose some out the back at times. Seemed like no matter what I did I would either get some out the back now and then or i was getting trash in the hopper. Now I know thank you!

Also Thank You to Matt for the taking the time to give us a tour of your combine, what a complicated machine! Matt looks like a great guy to have as a friend, taking the time to give us a tour and finishing out your corn harvest. Stay safe and healthy!

Biggest issues we had with those 1460s were the clean grain auger that ran across the bottom and the other was the feeder house jackshaft and also the shaker arm bushings . Everything else was common ware items as for the 900 series corn heads we also burned up the front gather chain sprockets about once a day and the drive chain on the left side ran in dirt and leaves all the time making it a issue . I have been around every version of the Axial Flow including the Next Generation AF10 which will be the largest with close to 12 ft long rotor and 775 hp with 550 bushel grain tank.

Matt, I bet you already know this, but be careful how much advice you read from the comment section lol. There's a lot of online combine operators that have never actually sat in one, but are just full of good advice anyway haha

Interesting to see Matt's IH 1460 combine. Sure had well-kept tinwork. Must have had various options available as new machines judging by the control panel. Many after-market and salvage parts are available...part of our decision to get a 1460. Not unlike your Dad's New Idea pickers...older machines can be rebuilt and gain extended use. Sometimes "parts machines" are a bargain if you take what's needed then part out or sell the rest for salvage.

I have plugged up the cylinder, combine ink oats many times. I wish we had a wrench to turn that thing backwards. You need to check the bearings on the cylinders for wear that is one of the highway points on any combine when it comes to bearings.

The 4 row head probably suits the small hilly fields but a well tuned 1460 will handle 8 rows .

Check out “ Iowa country girl”” they just upgraded to a 2160 or something like that I H, but they had an older one, until this last summer, they put a new elbow inside the green tank couple years ago, they may have a four row 38 inch header for sale since they’re switching to 30 inch rows for 2024. They also have a 38 inch new idea corn picker 2-row. They don’t need any more.

3hrs + if you bung it or shear the 6 hardened bolts that drive the rotor then it a 4hr job to get the rotor out and 4 to get back in 😢

3 years of work (?) and 15 years of experience so it seems. The guy knows what he's talking about. Keep him around. During my career, I have met quite a few harvesters and different headers, mostly prototypes. I did material research on parts and now, climatic tests on the full machines. I think these machines, next to foragers and specialised harvesters (flax for instance) are prone to wearing out pretty quickly compared to other machinery out there. sand and rocks are just the worst for machinery. It is nice to see an "old" one on the inside. I'm pretty surprised that everything is pretty reachable, except for the engine bay maybe. It's a bit different with newer machines. I never understodd why there are open gears on these machines... I understand covers can catch dirt which makes things worse, but open gears make me cringe a bit. Is there an explanation why that is that way? What does the operator think? i really would like to understand that choice of design.
