I had an teacher that absolutely hated Arial and I vaguely remember him saying that he'd consider knocking any document down a grade if they use Arial over any other font I used comic sans once and he never said anything about it

Besides it starts with an A, so it will always show up first when searching for fonts _I never thought I'll get angry over fonts._ lol

Cool, but I cant get over the fact that at 2:57 both Helvetica and Arial are written in... Arial...

For me, when I open Word, the default font would always be Calibri (body) and I would have to manually change it to Arial during editing. It's not because I have a preference with this font, I have to do it cause all my teachers require all my assignments be written in the font :/

I consider Arial to be an improvement on Helvetica and not just a cheap imitation. Helvetica was not designed for computers but for signs and easily read at a distance. It is great for saying things like "Look at Me" or "STOP." Also, it is used for titles of books, or maybe chapter headings, but not for printed text. (see point 2) Helvetica has a boxy quality where each letter almost has it's own space that is attention seeking and so longer passages are difficult to read. For computers, the angled terminus of letters, for example, gives it a more natural quality and flows much better. A second point is this: the absence of serif typefaces on computer screens. Pick up most any book, newspaper or magazine and the text will have serifs. This helps the reader follow along the line. But when computers came about the serifs are far to busy because computer pixels are not fine enough. Letters end up looking sloppy making text actually harder to read on a computer screen. Goodbye Times New Roman. One final point: The misuse of the word font. Arial, Helvetica, and Times New Roman, as I have described them here are all typefaces. By definition, a font is a typeface, with a point size, and any attribute like italics or bolding, etc. A font is a printer’s tray of characters and they are all the same; like "Arial 10pt. Italic," or "Times New Roman 8pt. Plain." Blame Apple for this mistake since "font" had only four letters and "typeface" had eight, Apple was worried that the word typeface would take up too much room on menu bars (the standard width of a computer screen may have been only 640 pixels) and so began calling of typefaces fonts. (Sorry Apple Geeks. Steve Jobs was not perfect after all.)

Times New Roman was always my favorite

I love this video so much, it is an easy to understand view on typography. I used to be one of those people, I went from using arial, verdana, trebuchet MS to Helvetica and eventually became a typographer myself, so much is communicated by the font you use.

I always use Helvetica or Helvetica Neue, it's just so neat and clean

Arial was never the default font for Microsoft Word. Times New Roman was the default until Office 2007 when it was replaced by Calibri.

MS Word default font is actually Calibri

Hochelaga: "Arial is the default font when you open Word" Also Hochelaga: _Shows Word with Calibri as default, which has been the default since 2007_ One of the things that throws Arial off for me is that it's not properly weighted for the true type font technology. It just stretches out when bolded, and in italic, just skews to one side. Otoh, Helvetica has properly adjusted weights. The other thing is the ever so slightly non-parallel outlines in letters like the peak of the triangle hole in A, and the valley of the v. I know graphic designers do use these tricks, but in Arial it's just a little bit too much that your eyes sees them, and then cannot unsee them ever again.

The number 1 in Helvetica looks much better than the number 1 in Arial style. On RU-vid, I saw lots of freight cars printed in Arial font.

It seems that Arial is linked with Microsoft while Helvetica is linked with Apple, as Helvetica was the system UI Font of iOS from iOS 1~8, and capitons in RU-vid App for iOS are shown in Helvetica :D Arial isn’t available on Chromebooks: the font will show as Arimo even though Google Docs says it’s Arial, but Helvetica is, however ;)

You should try Arimo if you want a metrically-compatible Arial replacement. The fear of risking text overflow due to document portability is also non-existent too.

My favorite font is Calibri Regular because it is pleasing to look at end it’s easy to read

I discovered that when Helvetica was in bold it looked the same as Arial bold and now I know why

MS Sans Serif was also derived from Helvetica, and in fact, in Windows 1.0 to 3.0 it was called Helv.

For sans-serif typefaces, I use Avenir, D-DIN/DIN-1451, Interstate, and Optima to escape the overuse of Arial typeface, and make the new world.

My mom loves using Arial, she uses that font all the time. One font she strongly dislikes though is Courier.

l hate the lack of lines on the top and bottom of the capital I. It's so annoying that you didn't even realize the first letter of this post is a lowercase L.

Tbh I think Arial just fulfills those criteria better lol Heretica still has some flourishes, which you point out when contrasting them, which Arial sanded down. If you're going for "basic but professional" those bells and whistles are unwelcome.

Gotta love your use of Papyrus & Comic Sans in the making of this video! For my money, Helvetica Neue reigns supreme. I'm a HUGE fan of Akzidenz Grotesk too. Now can you explain to me how a magazine I used to art direct got sued by Adobe (with whom we had a VERY close relationship) for unlicensed use of Agenda when, by the designer's own admission, it was a rip-off of the font designed by Edward Thompson in 1916 for the London Underground? The NERVE of them, charging us for a font they basically stole! OK, so yeah, as our logo font, it featured quite predominantly.

Most people cannot distinguish between Arial and Helvetica, and many don't care. Arial is overused. People are unaware of fonts like Optima, Univers, Futura, Myriad Pro, Eras, Avenir, Frutiger etc.

The obvious difference is in the ‘e’.

I've always hated Arial and this only makes me dislike it even more. It's bland, characterless, and soulless. I have the same enmity for Calibri as it's been the standard on MS Office for the past years so is boring imo. Is it normal for someone to have such strong opinions on fonts? Probably not. But hey, I'm a calligrapher so I feel it's justified ;) (for the record, I like Helvetica)
