I love that simple switch for high, low, and off. Very smart for them to use parts that can be bought pretty easily and not have to make a special one. Looks like a pretty well made unit.

I wish manufactures would keep more stuff simplified. But they want to make money off selling replacement parts as much as the tool.

I like the reel, I am going to cobble up something similar for my gas powered pressure washer. Incidentally, the book that came with my craftsman washer recommends using RV antifreeze in it over winter to prevent oopies.

Thanks for the tear-down. You are right about the water freezing in there, I ruined a pressure washer pump because of that. Now every fall I run RV antifreeze through the pump before putting it away for the winter. I see now that Home Depot carries the SunJoe brand/

Great review and video. I take exception to one point. You said that it isn't designed to fail at any point, I disagree. The unloader valve is made of nylon, you kind of glossed over this, and the company doesn't make a replacement part. If the unloader valve gets gummed up (which they tend to do) there is no way to disassemble it and clean it out. The nylon body is too flimsy to be unscrewed and so it is impossible to take it out and clean it. But, even if you do manage to get it out, (likely damaging it in the process) the company, Snowjoe, does not sell a replacement part and only offer a 15% discount on your next purchase. If the unloader valve is gummed up it will permanently cut off your motor rendering the entire machine worthless. I believe this unloader valve is designed to fail so that you will be forced to purchase a new product. If this wasn't the case the company would just offer a replacement part so the owner could repair it. But, they don't want us repairing it, they want us to buy a new one. This is the world we live in now, and it is sad.

Sold me on the older unit Sun Joe SPX3000... My garage is my office and she needs a floor makeover. Home depot 137.02 delivered to my door with Illinois state tax. I have been looking for one of these for a while, the review and the tear down was helpful in my decision. The new model was going for 199.. The next question to ask would be after I wash the cement garage floor; what would be a good sealer to use? Also thinking of vinyl tiles. The floor is sound. Just needs a cleaning a seal. Thanks for the great advice as always!

I was impressed at the 4000 Home Depot+Amazon reviews they had on the SPX3000. It's rare you see something with that many reviews and that many positive. I've actually never sealed/ epoxied cement but I've heard horror stories of it pealing because of the oils soaked in. Tiles sound like a safer bet.

Hi Moe. Excellent tear down and theory explanation of what can damage one! That does look to be a well made machine for a smaller one. Several people I know who have complained about different brand machines they have, always wondered if they froze and don't fess up. :) Great idea where you showed how much water is retained in that valve body when someone would think different and then storing in a cold place for winter.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
These low end triplex pumps don't have a very long lifespan to start with. They are designed to run around 50hrs+-. They will allow a homeowner to wash their car 200 times or for 10years if not frozen, etc. The issue with these pumps on the gas machines is the operator leaves them idling for 5-10minutes while they hand scrub the car or move something. The pump circulates the same water for this time and overheats. I find they start overheating in a couple minutes of not pulling the trigger and get up to a few hundred degrees F fast. The constant water passing through while pulling the trigger acts like coolant. The pump spins at 3600rpm on most consumer direct drive units and only 1800rpm on commercial belt driven units. The lower rpm keeps the commercial units cool and give them a much longer life.

Very interesting and thank you very much, super info. I have friends who have issues with their washers and several with issues currently. It is a gas powered one like you mentioned. (actually it was a gimmie - freebee) May I ask what parts perhaps should be looked at to repair if this happened? I know another guy who borrowed his to a neighbor and said it didn't work right when he got it back. (gas too) I will be passing this great info to those guys and thank you in advance Moe, Jeff.

From what I've seen in this style of triplex pump, it is just the piston return springs or the spring retainer that breaks with all the heat/vibration. A few brands use an all ceramic piston that I've also seen snap.

Just a btw comment water does not compress, the pump just moves a precise amount of water. Pressure is made by the pressure rated hose pushing the water through the gallons per minute nozzle, that model is typically a 2 gpm.

I have another pressure washer, that was leaking water all over the place out of one of the cylinders, comparing this sun joe with mine, I can see this one is much better quality mine has plastic cylinder head. with just a cover that holds the inserts in, this one has individual metal caps, much better design I think. also noticed yours has lots of oil in the inside, mine just had a coating of grease, that oil in yours should conduct heat better to the housing, again, a better design feature. thanks for this break down, I think I know what unit I am going to get to replace the one I got. btw, regarding models, i notice 4 main models, 2 uprights and 2 cart types, the difference being whether they have a roller for the hose. so, 3000 is upright, 3001 upright with roller, 4000 cart, 4001 cart with roller, PSI and all that are the same on all 4. think I am going for the 4001, like the cart idea, I just know I will knock the other one over.

What kind of pressure does that develop? The electric pressure washers I've seen don't shut off power from the wand like that, but only cuts off the water flow. I guess that one doesn't use a valve at the wand, to allow the pressure to bleed down then the trigger is released, and unload the pump for startup.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
It peaks at over 2000psi but that is pretty standard with any pressure washer. The gallons per minute is where one unit will shine over another. It has the same unloader valve built into the pump that all pressure washers do, they just added a motor shut off as well.
@stevenbishop6115

How much oil goes inside the pump? I got a spx4000 second hand, looks like previous owner tried to do some sort of maintenance and spilled the oil out
@michaelweiss6163
@michaelweiss6163 2 года назад
I think the Total Stop System (TSS) switch in the wand is not working correctly. It senses water flow in the pump. When the trigger is released, water stops flowing through the pump. When I release the switch and go to press the switch it does not turn on the pump. I have to take off any nozzle and then reattach it before it will work again. Can I spray some electrical contact cleaner on it? And if I can how do I get to it.

Great stripdown and discription of the way it works :-D. Ive allways liked your straight forward way of explaining things. Perhaps that device on the heatsink is a triac, same idea as a lighting dimmer, chopping parts of the ac waveform out to produce less voltage, also adjusted to drive an inductive motor. Like the switch/cam, simple and repairable.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
After I did the video I was looking at the circuitry and was thinking that is was a triac, as this is the only way the simple circuit could reduce the motors power(low)
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 7 лет назад
Yes it sounds like you had the same thought, typically lighting dimmers also have a two pin diac that looks like a blue or red diode without a band. If you see that, it sounds like a phase firing chopper. Ive seen the same type of circuit in vacume cleaners for the speed.

I buy a lot of these broken gas units just for the Honda engines to put on other equipment. Just don't let the engine run for more than 30 seconds or so without pulling the trigger, even if it is just spraying at the ground. The pump overheats and destroys itself.

I have a Briggs pressure washer horizontal crank Honda engine. I have run this thing for literally hours on end. It gets stinking hot. The manual says to let it idle for 3 minutes after use and this ostensibly cools the pumps so it won`t fry. Of course, I have it attached to the hose, which stays on during this cycle. I have owned it for about 5 years. I leave it outside sometimes in snow and rain. It has paid for itself twice over.

Honestly, these are not meant to be rebuilt at all. The company actually got a little irritated with me that I took it apart and showed that on video. So any parts you're going to have to just measure and order bulk. As far as oil, most pressure washer pumps use SAE 30 non-detergent oil. This is pretty common at Walmart etc.

I got the washer used and it always had the priming issue, pump would start itself after about 10-30 seconds. saw your video so i figured i'll try to tackle that problem as well. took the whole thing apart. Everything looked ok to my surprise. The only thing i couldn't take apart was the unloader, is that replaceable? Vertical shaft gas pressure washer I pass all the time because the motors aren't very useful and pumps not worth rebuilding. Horizontal shaft gas pressure washers I pick up all the time for $25-50 with a good engine and bad pump with the idea of just using the engine. I prefer to grab the low end units with the Honda engines(gc160-gc190) for swapping onto tillers, etc as it increase the value/ease of sale of a machine dramatically. I probably wouldn't pick up a low end gas pressure washer with a bad engine as the pumps only last 25-50hours and it is probably defective as well.

Yeah, kind of I guess. It seems like at times it's going full strength, but then I let go of handle (and it keeps running) and then I re-squeeze handle and it's just shooting water without any pressure it seems. Generally pressure washers use Non detergent Sae 30 motor oil in the pump and only takes around a cup. That oil is available at Walmart or any auto parts store.

@sixtyfiveford

I don't think individual parts like that are sold do to the low total cost of the entire unit.

@@sixtyfiveford ...thanks, I called snow Joe and they said the unit has a 2 year warranty...send it back and they give you a new unit...that's a pretty good deal

Where do you find parts for that pump and motor
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Год назад
You won't find any parts. These are designed as throw away units.

Can a EPW pump be replaced like a GPW? I'm wanting more GPM lol
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
Yes. You are limited to the horsepower of you engine though. So you will give up PSI for GPM.

"... It's more expensive than the pump." Huh, what? That doesn't make sense. How can something be more expensive by itself than the whole device that contains one?

It's plain to see that an electric washer is a better deal than a gasoline one for occasional use. It's a nuisance to shut off the engine/save the pump from damage. That explains what happened to mine, despite avoiding idling it.

I actually never gave electric pressure washers a second thought until a few years ago. The ease and convenience is great.
