Ever wonder how it gets done?.. well.. Here's how, Thanks Phil From P&A Auto Glass.. NOTE: Due to the Conflicting comments on youtube on " how its supposed to be done" Im putting a note here saying that I am not a Professional Glass Installer. I do NOT specialize in thise Field. I took it upon myself to ask for Permission from this glass Installer to Video Record his Process. I am Neutral on this Method and I do not have the Experience or know how on the " proper way" to install the windshield. Im soley going off the Information Given to me by this Professional Installer. This Video is For entertainment purposes, and to show the world and my Subscribers how a Installer out in the Field removes a Windshield. As far as this being " the Proper way" I dont know. I am not a Glass Installer. All I can say is the Job was a success, He was never called back as far as I know for a warranty repair. ENJOY THE VIDEO, YOUR COMMENTS and INPUT ARE WELCOME.

Seems like a genuine dude and he had some nice tools. I'm not a pro, but I would have covered that dash, wore a cleaner pair of gloves, and maybe took the extra time to remove the pillars. I mean he was working on a 3 year old (at the time) Benz not a 90's Honda.

I gotta say something, it pisses me off that there are so many negative comments. Cut Phil some slack. Everyone's an expert, in their own mind. Anyone who does or did this for a living knows it's a shitty career at times. We run into different problems with so many different makes and models of automobiles. The industry got ruined when the insurance companies were allowed to dictate how long it should take to do a certain job. None of those motherf***ers ever changed a shield in their life. And every technician knows we should use OEM parts, but insurance wizards figured it's much cheaper to use aftermarket. If we were to go by what Autoglass magazine says on how to do a job on any given automobile, you'd be lucky to fit in two jobs a day. We are trained to cut corners in order to get more jobs done in a day. Let's face it, it's all about profit, and not so much about the quality, that went out in the 70's. Trust me, I know we all take pride in our work, and I'm not saying everyone is a hacker, this industry doesn't get the respect it deserves, for what is expected of us. We run into bullshit quite often, and if you say you don't, you're full of shit. Sure, there are things I would have done differently in this video also. But I also know, that each and every one of us who does autoglass, was trained by someone else with their own experience. Nobody can tell me that they learned their business without making mistakes. There's too many smartasses out there who think they know everything about everything. It takes experience to know what the fuck you're doing, and still, you don't know it all. In my opinion, the guy did a pretty good job with what he had. He does have experience, and if you can't see that, then you're just another ignorant fucking dick who thinks he knows it all!

This video - and its step-by-step verbal guidance, was simply very informative - at least to someone like me who doesn't know shit about auto windshield (or back shield/rear glass) removal and installation. I learned more from watching and listening than I ever knew before or had expected to learn. I now have an idea of some, if not all of the steps an auto glass repairman would have to take should the windshield or the rear glass window of my car need replacing. Thanks for the video. I appreciate it!

Wow the comments are funny. There where some issues with the install. But over all this is actually top notch work compared to what he could have got. I been a tech for 15 yrs. when I started my own company 7 yrs ago I hired a guy with twice as many yrs experience he cost me over $2000 in his first hour on the job. Basically what I'm saying is it was not a perfect job but it could have been way worse. Don't let your insurance pick the glass shop and don't price shop.

Scott Roberts Very True. My ins Company bought all Cheap replacement Parts when My Nissan Altima Got into a accident. I went down to the body shop and told them to get the Adjuster on the phone and tell them Im not taking delivery of this car. It was Made with Genuine Nissan parts, and its being repaired by getting Genuine Nissan Parts. 2 Weeks later and alot of Bullshit, I got my car back, and I Checked for the nissan stickers. two weeks later I smelled Burning plastic, I took the bottom shield off the car to find my fog light wiring harness was now speaker wire and wires twisted together with electrical tape. next time, Im just going to do it myself

My experience with glass installation was at Chrysler's Warren, MI plant on the Dodge Ram truck line. We once did it all by hand and used rubber gaskets. Then butylene became the greatest thing. Then robots and urethane adhesive sealers became the norm with the advent of passenger side air bags and the use of less metal in the A pillars. Urethane bonds the windshield to the frame, in effect becoming a structural member of the car. What the guy means by crash tested, is that the manufacture of the urethane product crash tested a car or truck at different times and came up with one hour as a minimum to survive a crash without the window popping out. All cars with passenger side air bags use the windshield to bounce the air bag off of it. If the windshield is installed using improper methods, the windshield can pop out from the air bag deploying. And that is not a good thing, as the windshield is designed and secured in a way to keep you in the vehicle and keep the roof from collapsing in a roll over accident. That is a protection rubber gaskets or butylene never offered. If you are over the age of 40, you remember seeing wrecks with the windshield laying in front of the car some place down the road. Overall he did an excellent install. Only thing I would have done different, is a continuous line of urethane from the passenger side lower windshield, working all around to the drivers side lower and completed the bottom from the passenger side to the drivers side. That way you have no gaps or run the risk of future leaks. A lot of windshield installers do not do it the right way. On a large car or truck, you sometimes have to sit on the dashboard to run a one piece bead of urethane to get the best sealing. Never lay on the hood on any car or truck made after 2006. You will dent the hood and that is not good. Due to importing car's and trucks to Europe they require the hoods to buckle when a pedestrian is struck, something not required under North America laws. So if you have a new car or truck, whatever brand, and you get into a slow speed parking lot crash and your hood buckles, now you know why.

What is up with people seeing RU-vid videos and ALWAYS saying that person sucks and they could do better. I am certified at Safelite Autoglass and been there for awhile and there is only one thing he did that we do not do. Other then that he did absolutely everything by the book. I mean we don't use the extractor or cold knifes because they are illegal at safelite now but I'd say this guy did a perfect job. He by crash test he means the urethane and glass remained in tack and glass stayed at least 75% without shattering completely in a staged 30 mph head on collision. This guy is good forget hand setting glass though when I got my true seal next to me. Lol

I install also and all seemed pretty good, except 1 thing. when he cut the sides using the equalizer(jigsaw) which nobody uses anymore because they scratch/Gouge the paint. he should have made a mark with a marker on the blade so he know the depth before it hit the sides of the paint/Body . I'm curious what he did for the rain sensor? did he replace the whole thing or just put a new pad? But yea it looked like a decent install.

show the removal of all the trim pieces, windshield wiper arms, etc. before all the work (cutting the urethane seal all the way around) that goes into getting to the point to where this video starts at. that to me is more useful information than anything shown here.

+rodeo o Or you could do the job yourself in 90 minutes, like i did. Borrow a cuttiing tool or buy the tool with the blade and the pull handle on it for $20 at any autoparts store. As mentioned the hardest part is getting the trim pieces off, hence the initial comment.

What happens if there is rust coming from the window frame sealing area? Is all windshield adhesive crash tested? Can you cut out the urethane without the use of that reciprocating saw and attachment?
@905speedgta
@905speedgta 9 лет назад
David F. Ive seen people cut windows out in many ways. One thing I was told by multiple installers is you have to leave some of the old adhesive when installing a new window. as far as the rust goes. you have to treat all rust before replacing the window. if your window was replaced some time ago and you now have that happening thats a problem

Not bad. I would have him work on my car. Not a big fan of the Equalizer he uses but to each his own.. Certified..Hmm Ok. Well by who. Old NGA or The Safety Council now? Honestly there is no known one universally recognized certification for auto glass. Not one 3rd party administer demands it or give extra work because of it. That said there are several different certifications out there in Glass land and I am all for it.

905speedgta Ok #1 you never go in the middle of the W/S with a cut out knife, you can chip the paint! You start at the corner. #2 that is one of the first tool they made and I it's not that good. #3 he is using a scraper that is to close to the paint and is a tool that can scratch the car, a long knife is better in my opinion. #4 When he uses the scraper on the passenger side he is pulling it towards his belly. #5 he is cleaning the W/S wearing the same dirty work gloves he used to cut down the beading/gasket, and could contaminate the W/S. #6 he uses the same primer dauber from the W/S that he did on the pinch weld, the same dauber NEVER goes back in the primer! #7 he stops the run of the bead be for he even gets to the end, and then buts up to the urethane instead of cutting in the bead, he should go around the the bottom after shooting the bottom first! I would have liked to see him set the W/S? And he didn't cover the interior or put a cover on the hood! And I am a Master Glass Technician with 33yrs experience and I started the mobile unit out of Commack NY for Safelite and made it would wide by training VPs & DM/RMs...

now that he used all these power tools and tore up the dash probably pinchweld and possibly the Vin the car is worthless. should have called safelite for this repair

+joshua halberstadt safelite is the maaco of the windshield industry. Cheapest is not always the best. Glad it worked out for you but they have a lot of very unhappy customers. Oh I'm sure you're right about the pinchweld, I know everyone looking to buy a car pulls the front windshield out to inspect the pinchweld before purchasing. He made sure not to touch the vin, he said so in the video.

+TheAmericanUhate There's a lot of small shops around that are better quality at a cheaper price than safelite.

+TheAmericanUhate so when it rusts out and needs body work to repair it properly than yeah its better to not do it this way.

not the worst job in the world but couple things he could have done different. Thats how the old heads did things but working on those type of cars you dont need to use such inferior tools and supplies.

Yea I gotta agree with all the comments saying this guy's method is wrong. Totally unprofessional. I would have torched out the glass that way you don't get any structural rust from micro dents from the saw. Alternatively he could have used a grinder. Best way is to just glue the new windshield over top of the old one. ASE ABC 123 safetech certified for Ferrari Porsche Buggati and Bentley 79 years in this industry. Basically I am the final word on this subject.

I install glass for 10 yrs I never ever seen a person still using jigsaw fine blade saw. That's a stone age tool. Ryobi Caulking are pieces of shit tool from homedepot. Cheap tool. Most of the tool he's used are seem not to be professional. Am sorry not to judge this guy. If I own this Mercedes I wouldn't let this guy install my windshield. First his clothing is not safe. He's work with glass he's should have a proper clothing to protect himself of broken glass. He's doesn't looked like certified technician. He's sound like a liar ... Well good luck believing in him..

In the world of rock climbing, which I've been doing for 43 years now, there are lots of "experts" with ONE WHOLE DECADE OF EXPERIENCE (WOW!!!) such as yourself. The difference between the self proclaimed "experts" and the people who are solid, highly experienced climbers, and often do the body recoveries on the "experts", is that the "experts" spend more time talking trash about other people than they do studying the fine details of their craft, and learning how to pare unnecessary flashy gear out of their kit. Oh, that, and the fact that the "experts" get killed because they're simultaneously arrogant and stupid. Who would'a thunk?

Kiwdafish1 Andrew Armstrong People love to talk shit because they are behind a screen. I love it when other youtubers come on my Channel and call out someone elses Cockiness and stupidity like you two did, Its great, and I dont feel alone now. First off, PROFESSIONALISM ....Professionalism is how you conduct your business with your client. This involves your quality of work, and your word to DELIVER SERVICES AS DESCRIBED.. I'm a Mechanic. And I specialize in electrical system repair and troubleshooting. And I deal with my customers Direct. I own very few " HIGH END" tools. AM i unprofessional because I have craftsmen, Dewalt, and OEM tools?. NO... Certified???..In my opinion pertaining to the automotive field, certified means NOTHING.. about 25% of the jobs I get annually are jobs that I have to Do over properly because my new customer has brought it to a ASE certified shop for repair, " or some know it all", and they either didnt make the repair, or did the repair improperly. Ive also come to see that also ( 10+ years experience) also means nothing in this field.. You can spend 10+ years with your fancy snap on tools and your Certification and still be an asshole Know it all thats just floating along, making Arrogant nit picking comments cause someone can do it better then youuu. It all Boils down to SKILL, A will to learn,retain what u learn and provide a good service for your customer. Not snub your nose up at someones tools..Come on man, Get real......

The tools are not as important as the person who is doing the installation. Some people use wire method, some use cold knives. Some people use a lil buddy, some people don't. I don't see the point in paying $500 for a wire cutter when a $30 cold knife and some primer can do the same job. You remind me of a person commenting on how their windshield installer showed up without a uniform and it was "unprofessional" and made them "less trustworthy" -.-
