How accurate is the expected due date - Expected due date based on ultrasound versus LMP

Here is a secret: your doctor does not tell you your expected due date so that you know when your baby will be born. Telling you the expected due date fulfills a completely different purpose. And because of that it is really important that you get your expected due date as right as possible!
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, explain what the expected due date REALLY means. Moreover, they explain the two most common approaches to calculate the expected delivery date, namely, the first day of the last menstrual period as well as an ultrasound exam. And they also discuss which approach produces more accurate results. Furthermore, they explain what is the best time to have an ultrasound exam to predict the delivery date and why ultrasound exams later in a pregnancy produce less accurate expected delivery dates. Finally, they also briefly discuss what you can do if you receive several different estimated delivery dates.

I've been seeing this Dr from the start of my pregnancy, 1st trimester I got an EDD for the end of June via ultrasounds. I'm in my 3rd trimester now and my scans read 2 weeks ahead so I got earlier dates for EDD. The Dr was adamant on relying on these later scans and even wanted me to come in for a possible induction. I really didn't want to so I stood my ground. I'll wait till the 1st trimester EDD, I don't want to be induced if not absolutely necessary. Thank you for putting this out ❤

Now m wondering how I can know in which month Im? Is scan only possible way? when I asked my mom about her pregnancies she said she had menses during all her 4 babies like during.mine she had menses till 5 months and then got to know she is preg. During my elder sis she got her menses all 9 months and that was heavy bleeding just like.menses no spotting.

@CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes Год назад
Hi there 😊, yes, such big discrepancies are absolutely possible! So in that case, we would rather go with the ultrasound because the LMP approach normally really only produced a reliable result, if you are 100% certain about the length of your menstrual cycle... And even then is it often not consistent with the result from the ultrasound... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Can you make a video about overdue pregnancy and how we can help the body in this case please, how can we keep a good amount of fluid when we overdue ? .
@CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes 2 года назад
Hi there Thalia 😊, actually, we planned to publish a video about this topic the week after the next one. But that's probably too late for you... So, here is what we can tell you: In general, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is considered "normal". That said, there are several things which have helped other women in similar situations: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day) 2. Reflexology (same as nipple stimulation: it may not be done with a few minutes per day only) 3. Acupuncture (acupuncture itself cannot induce labor; however, it can help in cases when a woman cannot go into labor because of high stress levels. So if you are really stressed, acupuncture could help) 4. Exercises on a birthing ball Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, personally, we always treat Castor oil as last resort simply because of the side effects. Also, you can never be sure if it is going to work... Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction. Just discuss with your doctor first, if Castor oil is the right tool in your particular case... We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8rehbupwhzY.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation, Castor oil) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UgrbOc4cebY.html (birth ball exercises) And then of course, there is also relaxation: sometimes, the start of labor takes longer because stress hormones interfere with labor hormones. This can be a particular problem if fear is a topic (f.e. when a woman is afraid of labor). Anger could also be a reason. In that case, it can help to work on those stress levels, f.e. with the help of a massage treatment, mediation, yoga, whatever relaxes you. OR if it is indeed anger or fear, a therapist might help (or just talking with a friend). So that's that. And then another reason why labor is sometimes not starting is when baby is not engaged and/or is in an awkward position in your womb. But please don't get us wrong: labor can STILL start under such circumstances. However, in such cases, women often find it more difficult to go into labor... We just published a video about how to engage a baby: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A8_JTWASGHw.html. Maybe you find it helpful. Hi there 😊, normally, a pregnancy lasts 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. However, please keep in mind that the LMP approach can be very inaccurate in case your cycle was irregular... Normally, the most reliable EDDs are produced by ultrasounds that were done in or before week 12. So, if September 26 is what they told you based on that ultrasound, then it can certainly be accurate (well as accurate as an EDD can be)... @CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes 2 года назад
Hi there 😊, did you have an ultrasound exam in or before week 12 of your pregnancy? If so, the EDD that they gave you after this scan is the most accurate one. It is more reliable than the LMP method, because the LMP method is based on the assumption of the length of your cycle. As we explain in this video, EDDs based on later ultrasound exams are not very reliable. So, if they told you an EDD based on such an exam in or before week 12, we recommend going for that one... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

@CareAboutLittleOnes 3 года назад
Hello Charitha 😊, please note that as long as your doctor is not concerned, there is no reason for you to be concerned either. If you look at a school class, you can see that children are not all equally tall. The same applies to the size and weight of babies. Your baby does not need to be in the average range at birth in order to be healthy. The only thing that is important is that your doctor excludes important reasons why your baby does not gain more weight. For example: if they fear that your placenta does not nourish your baby well enough, they may recommend an induction before your EDD. But this is something that really only your doctor can tell you! And just a side note: our son was only 2000 grams when he was born in week 38. Still, he was totally healthy and he has been growing normally ever since We hope this helps! 😊 All the best for you and your baby! ❤️

Hi there 😊, if an ultrasound exam is done in or before week 12, we normally go with the result of that exam! The LMP is based on many assumptions. If one of those assumptions does not apply, then the resulting EDD can be quite inaccurate... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

I am in the same boat. Doctor is using measurements for 24weeks but I had a miscarriage in Nov 2023, a shorter-than-normal period around same 23/12/23, and a PTT about 2 weeks later. I got a can at a free clinic showing 6weeks in mid January, and then got insurance set up and another scan showing 10weeks in mid February at my doctors office. At 19w I had the anatomy scan but was measuring (only by Femur Length) in the 4% which set my doctor off on a fit and going to MFM weekly to be ultra-monitored. I asked this past week if we could adjust the EDD in the computer by 5 days (which magically moves me to the 40% percentile) and she is not open to it at all. I am advocating for myself here, because this is my 4th baby, and I have always gone into 42w with other babies so I know my dates are off, but I don’t want all the extra monitoring my doctor is pushing for. I am of the opinion that more monitoring leads to more interventions (and unnecessary anxiety on my part).

However recently I made another scan which said my EDD is the 26th to the 29th of June when I discussed my previous findings with the recent Dr, he said my baby is big for dates as she weighs 1013.26grams and that could be the reason for the difference. Hi there 😊, from our experience, the EDD that is based on a scan in or before week 12 is the most reliable one. Later scans normally do not produce reliable EDDs because they estimate the EDD based on the size of your baby. However, sometimes, a baby is indeed bigger (or smaller) than other babies. But unless there are medical problems, there is normally no reason to worry. Not every person is equally tall after all... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

@CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes 2 года назад
Hi there 😊, your wife's EDD was correctly calculated. It IS January 17th. However, please keep in mind that this method of calculating the EDD is based on strong assumptions (f.e. that her cycle was exactly 28 days). The most accurate way to calculate the EDD is an ultrasound exam which is done some time in or before week 12. So, if your wife had an ultrasound exam back then and if they told her an EDD based on that exam, we would go with that EDD, rather than using the LMP approach... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you, your wife and your baby!! 😊

Hi there Pablo 😊, thanks a lot for your feedback and KUDOS to you that you try to help your wife! First of all, please note that some babies only drop once the mother is in labor. Admittedly, it happens more in second pregnancies, however, it can absolutely happen in first pregnancies too. Moreover, there are ways to help support the whole process of helping the cervix dilate. Unfortunately, we would normally start in week 37 with the preparation. However, we did have a similar cases like yours at the clinic, and in those cases, the majority of them still went into labor naturally thanks to one or several of the following tools: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day) 2. Reflexology (same like nipple stimulation: it might be required to do this for 1+ hours per day) 3. Acupuncture (this can work particularly well if your stress levels are really high; and please note: it has to be acupuncture; acupressure would most probably not help at this stage) 4. Exercises on a birthing ball Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, personally, we always treat Castor oil as last resort simply because of the side effects. Also, you can never be sure if it is going to work... Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction. We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8rehbupwhzY.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UgrbOc4cebY.html (birth ball exercises) Finally, please keep in mind that stress hormones can hinder labor hormones. We see this very often in women who are under a lot of pressure, because they are coming close to an induction date or C-section date. Therefore, you can support her with a nice back massage, reflexology or send her to an acupuncturist. It can only support that process... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth and that things go much faster for your wife from here on onwards! ❤️

@@nanditakb3928 Hi there! Okay, so first of all, please note that we just CANNOT answer some of your question because we are not your doctor! You should actually be having this conversation with your doctor, because only they know the details of your pregnancy. We don't know them and so, all we can do is try to provide some GENERAL answers in the hopes that they help you: First of all, a premature rupture of membranes does not have an impact on your VBAC. In fact, if that helps you go into labor, it could actually be a good thing (given that you are a good candidate for VBAC) because this means that you don't need to be induced. Induction: whether or not you need to be induced and whether or not it is going to work this time is unfortunately nothing that we can tell you. If you don't go into labor spontaneously, you won't need to be induced. If you are induced, nobody can tell you if it is going to be a success or not (not even your doctor). What is your risk factor? We cannot tell you that! We don't know your case! Only your doctor can! Regarding scar thickness: as we mentioned in the video, you can find more information about scar thickness on our website: www.careaboutlittleones.com/are-you-a-good-candidate-for-vbac/ On the same page, we also refer to other videos where we show how to increase your chances of going into labor spontaneously! @@ararebriid9824 Got you! 😊 Normally, the ultrasound scan in or before week 12 produces the most reliable result. Later scans don't normally produce reliable results because when they take a measurement, they compare it to the average baby at that stage. Now, under 12 weeks, most babies are about the same size. However, later on, they grow at different rates. And some will become smaller babies, some bigger babies. That's okay. But because of that, later on, you will not be able to say: is my EDD wrong? Or is it simply that my baby is smaller or larger than other babies at that stage (which applies to some 99% of the babies)... We hope this helps 😊

Hi there ❤️, it's a very difficult position you are in. But unfortunately, we are not in a position to give you a recommendation... 🙁 You see, in general, we are big fans of letting labor start by itself. However, we don't know your pregnancy case. Only your doctor knows it. Maybe, there are good reasons why your doctor suggests not to wait for too long. However, this is really something that you need to discuss with your doctor. Don't be afraid to ask them why they don't want to give you the time to go into labor spontaneously. After all, it is one thing to recommend an induction in week 41, but another to do it in week 39. So, all we can recommend is: please talk to your doctor again! Demand from them a clear explanation why they suggest a medical induction. And then make a decision based on that answer! We are very sorry that we cannot be a better help here! 🙁 All the best for you and your baby! ❤️

Hi, Something similar happened with me today. I will be completing my nine months on 7th July and my EDD is 14th July. When I went to doc for the checkup today, she said that baby hasn’t moved further down than it was in my last check up which was 10 days ago i.e. 22nd June. She gave me castor oil to consume on coming Monday and said to come for internal checkup again on 6th July. She told that we can only wait for 7th July and will need to induced if castor oil also didn’t help to lower the baby down and in worse case if castor oil didn’t help in lowering the baby and the cervix doesn’t open then a C-Section is needed. So I am confused that is it ok to have things being induced after just completion of Nine months on 7th. Shouldn’t doc wait till the EDD for labour to being naturally. Things are otherwise normal doc said. I was expecting to have everything going normally, but today’s visit to doc has scared me so much. What can I do to bring the baby lower into my pelvis and to avoid the C-Section. I am already walking so much and have done so my entire pregnancy so that I can deliver normally. Please suggest me something. Thanks a lot in advance.

@@happyaura5450 Hi there! ❤️ To be very honest with you: we don't understand the rush of your doctor. Are there medical reasons why you should have an induction or even a C-section on the 7th of July when your EDD is 14th of July?? So, here is what we can tell you in general (without referring to your particular case, because we don't know it - only you and your doctor know it). In general, babies start to descend when babies start to descend. For some babies, this may mean week 37, for other babies, this may mean week 40. Again other babies only drop once the mother is in active labor (which may particularly happen in second pregnancies). It really is different from pregnancy to pregnancy. Therefore, if there are no complications during a pregnancy and no other medical reasons why a woman should be induced or have a C-section then there is no need to have a woman induced (let alone having a C-section). Finally, every body is different. Pregnancies normally last between 38 and 42 weeks. Of course, we understand that some doctors start to get worried when a woman goes far beyond her due date (because there can be more complications). However, this does not apply to week 39. Again, this is how we generally see it without knowing if there are medical reasons for an induction. However, keep in mind: it is your body and your pregnancy! You are the boss! 😊 If you have any doubts, get a second opinion from another healthcare provider! We hope this helps! 😊 All the best for you and your baby!! ❤️

@happyaura5450 3 года назад
@@CareAboutLittleOnes Thank you so much for the reply and your inputs. Really appreciate it. Just to let you know that there are no other complications and any medical reason. My doc just said that we generally just wait for nine months to complete and if labour doesn’t begin till then we induce as placenta matures and then there is risk to baby as the oxygen supply decreases to baby post nine months. I think I’ll consider going to another doc for second opinion. Thanks a lot again. God bless you both.

Hi there 😊, when we look at studies, we can see that an ultrasound exam in or before week 12 normally seems to produce the most reliable results. This does not mean, that different ultrasound exams done in or before week 12 do not produce different results. But it clearly seems that later ultrasound exams tend to produce less reliable results. Personally, we would say your EDD is somewhere around 24th to 26th of August. But this is only our best guess and thus a personal opinion. Hi there ❤️, we are very sorry to hear that - you are probably very worried at this point! 😬 Please note that the EDD based on an ultrasound in or before week 12 is normally the most reliable way to come up with an EDD. So, normally, it is "safer" to go with the EDD based on that ultrasound, instead of lmp. The only thing that you can do right now is to stay in bed. But your doctor has probably told you so already. But we know how easy it is to say that, compared to actually doing it, when you have 2 kids at home.... On top of that, it is very important to keep your provider updated about everything that is going on (which you probably do anyways). Hi there! ❤️ Please note that if you don't understand your scan report, you should always ask your doctor! They are the experts and only they can explain in detail your situation. So, don't be afraid to ask! They are here to answer your questions!! 😊 That said, we are not sure if we understood everything correctly what you wrote, however, this is what we understand from what you are writing: 1. Baby was breech in week 19 and is now in a head down position ("cephalic") 2. In week 19, your placenta was completely covering the internal os (which is the opening of the cervix into the uterus). But now in week 24, your placenta has extended upwards. Please note that a low-lying placenta in early stages of a pregnancy is not necessarily a problem IF the placenta moves upwards as the uterus grows. Because when the uterus grows, it also extends upwards which often helps move the placenta upwards. And it seems that this process is happening in your case!
