We're using AI and Google Maps driving trends to optimize traffic light patterns and improve traffic flow. Stop-and-go traffic in urban areas causes 29 times more emissions than on open roads. Researchers at Google are partnering with cities around the globe, from Rio to Jakarta. So far, local governments have saved fuel and lowered emissions for nearly 30 million car rides every month. Can't tell you how many times I've sat at a light with no cars going through the intersection. I always felt our traffic light system was inefficient. I'm glad Google is trying to improve things. At night and at times when traffic is low sone stop lights can be eliminated all together. Thanks Google!

"Think Green" is a slogan I saw in traffic engineering magazines in 1964. Now, thanks to Google, we have massive data to help thinking in this way. At the present, the traffic control is mostly an example of "artificial stupidity." An exception is Los Angeles and Orange County, which introduced computer control in the 1960s. In New Jersey, walk lights stay activated 24/7 even though push buttons are installed. Sensors only exist right at the intersection. Sensors further out would refine the ability to more precisely make sensible light timings. The new controller housings are big enough to contain a small supercomputer!

There are already electric cars out there to solve that, but they're not that much of an affordable solution.

Sounds terrific. However, when Google says "free of charge" I can't help to think this is how they get you, before implementing monthly subscription three years after.

You can only improve the efficiency of signals at intersections that much because every signal has a capacity beyond which it becomes inefficient. Coordination of signals at intersections are already happening in many cities. Of late we have introduced adaptive signals in southeast Florida. I guess AI can make adaptive signals function much better. Overall having some big players like google, Microsoft, tesla, etc. would be a big boon for transportation engineering. I hope these big players would also enter the area of future traffic projection using models.

This makes driving a car more attractive, leading to MORE cars and MORE traffic. If Google wants to improve the environmental situation, they need to improve traffic for cyclists and pedestrians, not cars.

But then Google has to come up with another solution for that increased traffic, and a new one, and then again, which they can’t keep doing, that’s what it takes to make people realize, that technology cannot solve traffic congestion and climate change, so this project is a good thing, long term.

@@ncard00 Google maps recommends climate friendly routes and route alternatives without congestion. So in this specific case, it doesn't make sense. In general technology has fixed traffic problems for thousands of years. Look at the Roman roads and bridges. A well functioning traffic system without cars. Enough to conquer the known world. Looking at traffic lights again, for every ten minutes motorists don't wait at traffic lights, they'll just move ten minutes more far away from their destination to save /gain life quality, leading to more traffic.

This is a highly illogical statement. The only thing stopping people from driving cars is cost of ownership of a car. Making traffic lights less annoying won't convince someone to drive a car or drive it more often

Yes, let's reduce emissions by increasing cars throughput! Pedestrians don't matter because they're too naive and don't pollute. If pedestrians want synchronized green lights they should just carry a gasoline burning engine wherever they go.

Well, this is too little to late. Google lost it's trend taotally. Look at android auto - huge possibilities still strugling massively. At least connect android auto to maps first, then go to intersections.
