Actually, Google's data centers are built with a forward-looking design.🙂 They became the first large company to be carbon neutral in 2017 for the first time, and aims to be carbon-free by 2030. * Tracking Our Carbon-Free Energy Progress - Google Sustainability - sustainability.google/progress/energy/ * 24/7 Clean Energy - Data Centers - Google - www.google.com/about/datacenters/cleanenergy/

If this will work effectively on an industrial level, and it seems it will work wonders, then all of us would want to see this technology be a commonplace one. 🙂

I know the project is still in its infancy but this does have the capability to be the missing puzzle piece in making fully renewable power. Surprised more people aren't talking about it! I wish you all the success on this project.

Mutnovskaya GeoPP is a geothermal power plant with direct use of steam. The installed capacity of the power plant is 50 MW. Geothermal coolant (steam-water mixture) is supplied to the station through pipelines from wells (as of 2017, 12 wells are in operation) drilled at the Mutnovskoye steam-hydrothermal field. At the power plant site, the steam-water mixture is separated using separators (Average coolant composition: 26% steam, 74% separator), after which the steam is sent to the turbines, and hot water (discharge separator) is pumped back into the mountain layers through reinjection wells. The main generating equipment of the Mutnovskaya GeoPP includes two turbine units with a capacity of 25 MW, each of which consists of a K-25-0.6 Geo steam turbine and a T-25-2UZ generator. The generated electricity is supplied to the power system through a complete gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) with a voltage of 220 kV via a single-circuit overhead line 220 kV Mutnovskaya GeoPP - Avacha substation[2][3].

I worked on a project at a geothermal power plant outside of Sonoma, California. The facility (called The Geysers) has a 1,500MW capacity. One of the challenges there is the naturally occurring toxic substances (ie: arsenic) that are leached from the soil by the steam. There are processes to precipitate the toxins out for removal before the condensed steam is injected back into the ground but it makes the operation more complex and costly.

With geothermal you have two options afaik.. this is an open loop concept which uses technology from fossil fuel extraction called fracking to break up the rock and create more surface area. It is more efficient because of that, but it uses fracking, which is in a bit of a grey area since it could for example destabilize the ground or polute ground water.. i think it has a few more problems but most of them are averted when not used to extract oil.
@JanMilavec
@JanMilavec 8 месяцев назад
The other option is a closed loop, where the two pipes are connected underground, hence no water comes into contact with the rock. Its problem is the lower surface area, thus limiting it in terms of energy extraction rate. I forgot the rest but one of the engineering channels on yt made a great video about it. Personally i think these companies are not actually going to make these on a large enough scale to matter anyways, and are more than likely still relying on fossil energy from the grid to stabilize their energy needs.. might be wrong tho, we'll see

“Passive Houses” are mandatory for most of EU countries’ NEW building codes. One way to achieve a “passive house” is using earth heat exchanger (for example Zehnder ComfoFond). It works in small scale and now we see it's working at large scale too.

@sandracarson4339
@sandracarson4339 9 месяцев назад
@@SidarthDasari it is one thing to pump hot water from the ground, use the energy and return it, but this says they are drilling, creating fracking, and then pumping cold water through the fractures to heat it up. They didn't say anything about pumping geothermal water. This means they either left that out of the video or they are getting cool water from a shallow aquifer.
@laughinggas5281
@laughinggas5281 9 месяцев назад
Fervo pumps water into an injection well, which passes through fractured hot Rock underground to another well, the production well. The path between is created by fracking or fracturing the rock. the water heats up to nearly 400 degrees before returning to the surface. once there, it transfers its heat to another refrigerant liquid with a low boiling point creating steam (not water steam, it's the refrigerant vapor). The pressure of steam expanding spins a turbine to produce electricity. The water from the loop having transferred it's heat is put back down the injection well to start the cycle again, so a closed system. In a situation like Nevada where there is no service water they probably had to bring water to the site. It's unclear exactly how much they need for it but it's going to be recycled and probably very little loss in the process.

The steam should be re-captured afterwards. But it's true that it looks like they release the water into the ground so it's possible that some of the water is lost during this period. The seems like this "lost" water would not be contaminated however, and would likely eventually surface and evaporate and return to local watershed. Maybe? Definitely an important detail to figure out.
@SidarthDasari
@SidarthDasari 9 месяцев назад
@@joelfacethe ground loop is entirely closed. The steam generation is done through a second loop via a heat exchanger. The verge and volts did features on this company's tech. It's pretty neat stuff
