How Alonso’s Comeback in 2021 Differs to Schumacher’s in 2010?

With the return of Fernando Alonso in 2021 getting ever nearer, I thought it would be a good time to look back and compare it, to the arguably even more controversial comeback of Michael Schumacher in 2010. In this video I look at what similarities there are between the two comebacks and also talk about the key differences in the motivations for returning to F1.

True that its all about legacy for Fernando. Even though he extracted everything out of those Mclaren cars but still some people don’t consider him a great driver at that time. Atleast at Renault he will have chances for podiums and Alonso will keep on extracting the maximum as always. It was sad to see him getting beaten by drivers with fraction of talent. Hopefully Renault keeps improving like it has been this season so atleast they could have multiple chances for podiums and Fernando could show he is still one of the best driver on the grid

I feel for Alonso. I think he just wants the recognition and respect he feels he deserves. Is that arrogance? Maybe a little, but who here can honestly say they wouldn't feel the same way in his position? He's a driver who, in terms of quality, deserves to be mentioned in the GOAT debate but is often passed over due to his stats and numbers. He never achieved what he could have done because since 2008 basically every team he was in was in a massive slump while he was there and couldn't provide him the tools to get the job done (but he nearly did it several times anyway). Was he perhaps a factor in his teams having uncompetitive cars? Did he misjudge his career options? You could perhaps argue those, but he certainly wasn't the only reason and he definitely had some awful luck with regards to his teams and cars. What can't be argued is for almost his entire career he's been far better than his car.
@freewyvern707

For me, his 2012 season proves to me why he is (in my opinion) better than drivers like Hamilton and Schumacher. I really only struggle to say he is better than Senna. To be fair and this is just my personal thoughts here... so here goes, I grew up with both of these guys during the V-10 era and that's what made me a Schumacher fan from 1997 onwards. Granted that was a heavily controversial year when he tried ramming Jacques Villeneuve, but that didn't stop me supporting him and when I saw him took his 3rd title in 2000 I reacted similar to how he did in the car at Suzuka even at the tender age of 7 years old. I enjoyed his dominance and granted back then I thought the man was invincible and no one could stop him in winning forever, that's when Alonso came on the scene... In 2005/2006 my young mind and heart was shattered when Alonso won his two titles and dare I say it at the time I did hate him that he'd beaten my all time hero and every time I got into a conversation and when they mentioned Fernando I crucified him no end and always ended up shouting at my friends saying Schumacher was the best of all time and that he'd be back again for more. After the Italian Grand Prix in 2006 when Schumi mentioned his first retirement I actually did cry, yes I admit that I actually burst into tears because I was losing an inspiration that I'd enjoyed for all that time and I actually prayed that he'd get an 8th title but of course come Suzuka that year when his engine blew I just had my mother switch the TV off! I knew it was over and Fernando took his 2nd title.... I didn't watch F1 in 2007/2008 because Michael wasn't in it, and Alonso was still in it and still racing but I had no ascertainment of the controversy of Singapore 2008. By this time living with my Grandparents my Grandfather encouraged me to watch F1 again in 2009 and I have to say I actually enjoyed it! I loved watching Jenson getting his title at Brawn GP and seeing Kimi winning at Ferrari at Spa, it was a very entertaining season! Then came 2010 and my Pop's turned on the news and that was when I saw Schumacher was coming back to F1... despite being 17 and ending my teenage years I was so excited, I believed within me that Michael would come back and continue where he left off... and oh boy was I wrong. I just kept shaking my head in thinking what the hell is going on with this guy?! Then as I've learned it was age and a crap car that aided his poor showing from 2010-2012 however saying that... the old emotions of 2000 came back when he got that ''pole'' at Monaco and finally at Valencia in 2012 with surprisingly Fernando and Kimi and Andrea Stella on the podium... yep my emotions flooded then because I'd realised that Fernando as well as Kimi were still there and finally Michael had joined them.... It does still leave a lump in my throat whenever I watch it when they have the photograph together as I did feel it was the final time all 3 would be together on the podium. I knew Michael's days were over and when he announced his third retirement I acknowledged that with respect as I did say under my breath.. ''Schumi you've done enough, thankyou for everything...'' Fernando meanwhile, as time went past and saw him win at Ferrari everything I thought about him at Renault had gone. I actually started to like him in his racecraft and how fast this guy was. In my world today I still think he should have gotten that 3rd title in 2012 whilst Michael was still around, to me now Fernando is a legend! Looking back at his Renault career in 2005/2006 and watching race footage now I can understand why he earned those two titles, he's very gifted and he deserves both of them and I recognise him as one of the greats. Watching Alonso in Alpina shows he still has that fire to get up there even with an under performing car. To be honest I really hope we see him on the top step again! Thankyou for reading.

Schumacher didn't come back to develop the car. Hamilton couldn't drive the car set up for Michael at the beginning of the 2013 season so Merc made a ton of changes on the brakes and steering wheel to suit Ham's driving style. Michael's contribution to Mercedes success was to convince the parent company in Germany to invest proper money on the F1 team, because their come back in 2010 had only been half hearted. Nohwere near enough investment on their wind tunnel and other infrastructures to compete with Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren at the time.

The main advantages for Alonso is he's returning to a familiar formula and in 2022 everyone has to reset somewhat and not just him. The conditions for his comeback are far better than they were for Schumacher, so he'll do better. He'll beat his teammates. If the car is there he'll get multiple podiums.
