Very informative video!Except for a few new trees I have put in, the orchard here is OLD...massive apples and cherries. We just cut the grass under them...and harvest the fruit. But for my new plantings, this info is perfect timing! Thank you.

Wow this helped me with my new budding plum treees. I stil have a question. If theres fruit on my trees i can still fertilize? What about with mulberries? I have flowers blooming now yet no fruit PRODUCED as of yet. And they're in pots. I can still fertilize? Even tho there's flowers and the roots are tight in a confined pot? Will the fertilizer burn the roots. Ty so much for your help.

Great video. I just started my food forest a few months ago. I havent started a rain collection system yet. How bad do you think tap water is to keep all plants going in my first year. I'm using thick layer of wood chips and I'm on the central coast with only sand so first year watering will be a lot.

Yes, it's expensive for older trees! He's got an 11 lb bag & it sells for 18.00 He said you can use higher NPK fertilizer and decrease the amount you use. Double the NPK & decrease the amount by half? But I don't think there's an organic fertilizer with higher NPK.

I know this is an older video, and I am not sure if you will respond, but I am wondering... What would you suggest for a nut tree? I have a Hickory tree that as far as I can guess, is approximately 85-years old and is by far much taller than the house I live in, and it was built approximately 85-years ago. The year we moved in (Spring 2019), the gentleman who was caring for the property for the landlord told us that this tree produced well over a ton of nuts that he had raked up and then burned. The very next year (2020), the tree barely produced at best a few pounds and that is probably being generous. Last year (2021), which was our second year in the home, this tree again produced well over a few hundred pounds of nuts, and not knowing how to utilize them, we gave them to the wildlife to enjoy. This is our third year in the home and I know after watching your video that this tree really needs to be fertilized, since to my knowledge I don't think it ever has been. What are your thoughts regarding this very tall Hickory tree? ~SuzyJC-in-Pataskala-Ohio/USA_03.17.2022~
@paulroth6783
@paulroth6783 Год назад
Some trees are biennial producers. This is even more pronounced if you have a heavy crop 1 year. The tree then takes 1 year off to "recover" and goes at again the year after that. This is not uncommon in apples, pears, quince, etc. I'm not a hickory tree expert, BUT it really sounds like it's doing the same thing! You can "even out" the crop and get it produce every year, but thinning and pinching off flowers and young fruit in the "heavy year." This way the tree doesn't get so drained, and feel that it needs as much of a "vacation" the next year! I understand this could be quite difficult on a very large tree though...much easier to do on dwarf rootstock! So you might just except the fact that your tree is a biennial producer and maybe give heavy fertilizer on the producing year, and light fertilizer on the year off...

We have a fruit tree. Not sure what kind. Was here when we moved here in 2015. It flowers white flowers every year then that's it just green leaves. Some say it's a peach and some say it's a pear. We have no idea. What would cause a fruit tree to flower but no fruit?

This is confusing for me because I was just told in another video that apple trees require more nitrogen so use 20-10-10 which is the opposite of what this video says. How do I know which is correct?

I disagree with a lot of info here, but I hope it all works well for you. The frequency of fertilizing is zone dependent. Good rule of thumb is to apply 0.10 pounds of “actual nitrogen” per year of age, or per inch of trunk diameter, so fertilizing three times a year is too much. Mulching with composed cow manure once a year in late fall and covering with wood chips is all you need actually in northern zones, simple as that.

I grow both. Never had an issue with the officinale self seeding. Probably because it always ends up getting chopped n' dropped. The bocking 14 grows more vigorously and does not spread by seed so that's the variety I most prefer.
