For clarification the law is not to wear a wig, but that the hair be covered 😊 So everyone has their custom how! It could be a wig, a scarf, or a bag if someone wishes 😉
The point of covering the hair is to avoid vanity. Wearing wigs as a “ head covering” is all about vanity. This wig tradition skirts the spirit of the law.
I have to agree with u. It seems counterintuitive to the beliefs that I know of to be the reason for covering hair according to Abrahamic religions, I'm wondering if the " woman's energy kabbalah thing is an accurate depiction of the teaching or if this truly is what orthodox Jews believe.
I respect the tradition, but this video still does not help me understand the reason to wear a wig. If the tradition states to cover your hair for modesty, then how is wearing a wig (a beautiful long luscious one at that) respect that tradition ? Not showing your hair to the outside world, but wearing a beautiful wig is ok? How do people know it’s even a wig? Wouldn’t simply wearing a turban wrap, snood or scarf make more sense? I'm not sure I understand the idea of wearing a wig. If you are told to cover your hair, I understand that completely -- meaning to cover your head with a scarf, hat, etc. And by wearing a scarf, it says you are a married woman. As a married woman, how does anyone else know that you're wearing a wig? You can say you are. To me a scarf would outwardly acknowledge your faith and the fact you are married. To me a wig just doesn't do it. And 3000 years ago, the woman would wear a head covering - not a wig.
Most of the time when I see Hasidic women wearing wigs they look fake....not made to look so realistic like how the general public wears lace front wigs etc. The wigs don't look real...so you can tell they are head coverings.
It’s not as much an outward symbol of being married but more that it’s something you do for yourself and your religion when you are married. Wearing a scarf or a noticeable wig can show that you are married, just like wearing wedding rings everyday shows it, but the ring was only necessary for the actual marriage ceremony and married people can choose not to wear them after but just because your don’t see it, like a good natural looking wig, doesn’t mean they aren’t married. Jewish law says a married woman must cover their natural hair. There are a few interpretations based on where the Jews lived during the diaspora, when the Jews were kicked out of ancient Israel in around 70 AD. In the Ashkenazi community, Jews from Eastern Europe, it is interpreted that a wig can count as a hair covering since it does cover your natural hair as much as a headscarf would. This confuses a lot of people since the only references most people have regarding covering your hairs is Muslim women covering their hair for modesty. Modesty isn’t the reason married Jewish women cover their hair so they can look and feel as beautiful as they want in which every way that might be, as a wig or a headscarf, as long as their natural hair is covered. You are 100% right but what the woman who made this video doesn't say is that many Jewish women for that reason do not wear wigs because many Orthodox Jews particularly those of European background almost never acknowledge the even the existence of millions of Jews of Middle Eastern background with completely different customers and traditions which are many say accurate and representative of ancient custom

Jewish women were directed to cover their hair to prevent fallen angels from uh, interfering with them. Apparently, womens' hair is very attractive to them. Not sure why wearing another's hair would be effective in light of this.

Lots of Jewish women don't wear wigs but scarves. Everyone does what they think makes the most sense to them. The point is that the commandment is only for your husband to see your hair growing from your head (applying to Jewish Women) and not out of modesty.

@Ayse G Shanal - There’s nothing wrong with wearing a Sheitel…. You can’t get very high quality synthetic sheitels. I have both human hair and synthetic, but I still wear my tichel most of the time. You can always check the ‘sourcing’ on the company you’re considering the products to.

G-d didn't say that you should wear a wig, just that you should over your hair. For thousands of years Jewish women wore a scarf to cover their hair, it is only in the last few centuries that Jewish women began to wear wigs.

I used to wear wigs ("human hair" apparently). I stopped for ethical and personal reasons. One on the biggest questions for me on wearing someone else's hair : hair has STRONG spiritual ties to their owner, how do you feel comfortable wearing someone else's hair while being religious ? What do you believe your God thinks of you wearing the hair that doesn't belong to you ? These questions are really important to me since I strongly believe in the spiritual essence that hair has. Hair are antennas, it conveys the owner's personal energy. I remember people in India, Africa etc use to burn their shedded hair to avoid anybody doing which craft with it.

I was always taught that after marriage a women covers her hair so she will not be attractive to another man. It is a question of modesty. In Mea Sharim you can still see women with the shaved head and a shatel. The wig only came about the last 40 to 50 years. Better to wear a lovely hat or scarf to be humble in the eyes of HaShem.
But a wig can make a woman just as attractive, so it rather defeats the purpose. Also in Torah times women didn't have wigs they covered their heads with scarf or cloth wrappings...so this modern wig wearing is a bit hypocritical, women still want to look attractive with a nice wig..

I'll see people in various religions (barring Amish, they stay plain overall) have women wear headscarves for modesty, but also wear 20 gallons of makeup and a very fashionable outfit. Hey, I don't judge, it's whatever, I am not saying it makes them less closer to God, but logically thinking only it seems to totally defeat the purpose in preserving modesty and not getting unwanted looks of other men.

I don’t want to cover my head all the time. I don’t want to wear a wig, but I want to be obedient. So, now, with this information, I have instruction on how I need to behave and why. I was born and raised in a Jewish household now my parents were raised with much more tradition they raised us much more laid back. My brothers did have Bar mitzvahs and I had my bat mitzvah. I married someone that wasn’t Jewish. Growing up being the only girl with three brothers my dad and mom always said “Stephanie you need to marry a nice Jewish boy” well I never found one but my husband really made sure that my religion was always celebrated. Now we have two little girls and we do the same for every Jewish holiday we’re at my parents house eating the best food ( lol ) and for non Jewish holidays we are at my husbands family’s house. My girls get the best of both worlds. We have Hanukkah then my daughter Dani-Kay’s birthday is Dec 23rd then we have Christmas. Dani was named after my papa Danny. Maybe it’s just me but growing up Jewish was the best. My kids choose to do Hebrew school and they are happy and smart and amazing! So glad I came across this channel!!! It’s wonderful!

I still don't get this whole hair thing in Judaism and Islam. If the purpose of covering your hair is not to be attractive to other males, in many cases the wig is going to look BETTER than the woman's natural hair, and thus she is MORE attractive to other males.
If you watch again you’ll see the purpose has nothing to do with attraction for males. Just to cover and therefore can be covered with whatever she wants- like for example a wig

Muslim women cover not only their hair but dress modestly. These rules are different for each religion. It's not only a hair thing. Muslim men also have rules of covering their body and grow a beard, but it's different for a woman for obvious reasons, built differently. Why covering is important is because you see each other more objectively. In Islam it's not about a man being superior to a woman. We don't believe that. That's something the western media made people believe so. And we don't have hair covering with hair. Hope this explains it somewhat.
Hair covering predates Islam by quite a long time. In ancient times, the fallen angels found human women very attractive and our hair was one of the things that made them lust for human women. They would sin and have sexual relations with human women creating an unholy union resulting in what the Bible calls “the Nephilim”. They were the ancient giants. The Arab and other Middle Eastern men put hijabs on the women in order to make them less attractive to the fallen angels to protect them. I am not sure how the tradition started for Jewish women though.

quite right. when i want to look fancy, i wear a wig ..for casual, i wear a cotton beret (i have several colours) and i also wear a snood. i used to wear a bandanna and i am thinking of buying a hat called a slouchy ....the list is as long as your imagination. the bottom line: my hair is covered. ps....because of a wig, i look younger than my real age! side note...it doesn't matter if people can tell if i'm wearing a wig. i know it (and God knows it) I hope this helps.

Vanity is a huge problem for women, so covering our hair in public is our way to defeat the heart's desire to exalt self. This cannot be accomplished by wearing a beautiful wig, but by wearing a scarf. Every person must battle with self if they are going to become like God. God's command is to act humble and be modest, so this is the true reason why we Jewish women cover our hair with a tichel (scarf). Study every Scripture covering the topic of vanity, lust, and self exaltation and you will grasp the idea of wearing a scarf.
I believe they are misinterpreting the Law (Torah). Being COVERED means women should have hair and NOT cut it down like men do. Your literal OWN hair IS the covering. It's one of the many things that make women women. Also, you could say that after the watchers mated with human women, there was a command that they cover the hair as to not attract them with their beauty. Long flowing hair being one of the attractors of these watchers. Thus covering hair with hair, would defeat the purpose of the command and a SCARF would make more sense. And God will bless you even if you had NO HAIR. He cares more about the content of your character (treating your neighbor as yourself) rather than the hair strands HE put on your head and gave you. In the New Testament it tells us that a woman's hair is her glory and that she has power because it's long and uncut. Many Apostolic women have laid their long hair over their seriously I'll child while they prayed. It says that if a woman has short hair she might as well be shaved because she is basically dishonoring God if she's praying with her hair uncovered. I'm not explaining it very well, but Lee Stoneking has a book about it. I lost 30-40% of my hair due to cancer and complications related to it and the rest was severely damaged, snapped off if you barely touched it. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and cried as I chopped it short, but it had to be done to save the rest and by then I was wearing a wig anyway. It wasn't flattering at all, too dark and heavy but it was the only long one the cancer support agency had at the time and since I am Apostolic Pentecostal I needed a longer one. I wore it for a while until I could buy a somewhat better one at a local beauty supply store. After about six months I switched to scarves or hats bc the wig was too hot for a Midwestern USA summer is and by then my hair was in better shape and growing back. Fast forward five years and I am cancer free plus you can't tell I ever lost so much hair; it's longer and thicker than it has been in years.
A veil or scarf is more comfortable than a wig, to be honest. A wig seems obnoxious if it isn't necessary (hair loss, cancer, thin older hair, etc), especially if it involves religion.
@@wecx2375 I understand this. But even other Jewish sects have interpreted from the Talmud that the covering be a SCARF not a wig. The wig is unique to this sect. Others simply wear a scarf.

This is ridiculous. If you cover your hair for modesty, then wearing a wig completely defeats the purpose. This is exactly why Muslim women wear hijab and not wigs. Just because the hair isn’t yours, doesn’t mean you’re being modest.
I am not Jewish (non-religious actually) but I once visited a German synagogue with a group of men and the rabbi asked us to cover our heads with a cover (kippah) as a sign of humility to God who is above us all.

That is very contradictory. To cover your hair… with hair. Religion makes people do all sorts of illogical things and they will always find some excuse about ‘beauty’ and ‘love’ to rationalize it 😂
That's the reason why many Jews don't wear wigs particularly Jews of Middle Eastern and North African ancestry never wear wigs and it is forbidden for them to do so by their rabbis particularly for the reason that you mentioned it doesn't make any sense but Ashkenazi and European Jews do not often times even acknowledge the existence of their middle eastern and North African cousins they view us as being inferior and are totally ignorant of our practices and represent their practices as being the only Jewish customs and practices which they of course are not they refuse to acknowledge the fact that Judaism originates in the Middle East not Europe

That does look like a fun experience! I will still stick with a tichel because I feel more covered and love the morning ritual of wrapping. Also you can get like 300 of them for the price of one sheitel lol. It’s good for those of us who are indecisive 😂
I'm no long religious but I remember wearing a veil and covering my head in church as a young girl, so I think a woman covering her head goes back to the abrahamic roots of Islam, Jewish, and Christian faiths.

The wigs are certainly beautiful. To each their own. No judgment. My own religion has rules and customs I question. However, I think most religions, pretty much all of which were founded and controlled by men, that have these "rules" that govern women's behavior to be suspect when independently questioned. Again, my own religion included. However, I like the idea of having a choice to wear a wig, if that's what you want to do. The real problem everybody agrees is the very long wigs. Most teachers say that not Tznius. A very hard word to translate, basically it means "don't stare at me"

First, thank you for sharing and enlightening us. I grew up Apostolic Pentecostal and was taught to always cover our head/hair for similar reasons (spiritual reasons). The difference is we are taught to cover whether married or not and especially in the house of God. Speaks to the fact that what you are saying is not so strange and is rooted from somewhere although we cannot fully explain. Another difference is we have to wear hats or wraps rather than wigs. Personally, i am very keen on who touches my head even when i didnt necessarily practice my faith. Your head is your crown and should be guarded. Again, thank you as I was always intrigued to learn about the Jewish faith.
I was raised the same way different religion. We called them prayer coverings. Women wore their hair up. A woman's hair is her glory and we were not to cut our hair.

It IS about modesty. Our hair is only for our husband because it becomes a private part of our body when we marry. We can wear a beautiful wig (sheitel) while being modest (covering our private parts). The kabbalistic elements she spoke about are WHY our hair becomes private after marriage. We are supposed to be powerful (influential) and modest. Wearing the wig allows us to do both:)
It is absolutely about modesty that's why many Jews do not wear wigs in fact most Jews of Middle Eastern and North African ancestry which are the majority in Israel as opposed to in the United States and the West do not wear wigs for this particular reason it is insufficiently modest and makes no sense
I think many woman would to love these beautiful wigs no matter what religion. Everyone has bad hair days. People with dry frizzy hair can experience straight shiny hair. Some one with straight hair can have curly hair. The only time I would not want a wig is in very hot weather. I love the wigs in this shop. ❤
Nice adventure. My favorite CD on you was the dark top lighter lower area. A Light weight wig is always more pleasant to wear. Q: why is the super long wig so popular? Is it just fashion or is that Kabalatoo?
It doesn’t need to be obvious, just covered and everyone can choose how. Many have different customs. My community has the custom to cover with a wig rather then a scarf because wigs can be really beautiful and that’s a stress in Judaism as well, for women to feel and look beautiful

These women spend large amounts of money and seem to have so much "pride" in their wigs. This clip is the perfect example. I have never understood this idea.
As I Christian lady I believe as Paul taught in 1 Corthinthians 11 he said our hair is given to us as a covering. I do not cut my hair at all. I don't understand cutting off our hair , then just to put more hair on .
You really ought have your hair trimmed every so often to keep the ends from splitting and frizzing. Not cut it short, just keep it trimmed and shaped.
I agree; from what I understand Paul says to cover your HEAD If not a woman should have her HAIR cut short. From my understanding a women's hair is her covering because it covers her HEAD. Did God cover Eve's hair after the the fall when He covered her body?
Shalom aleichem. I just want to thank you for making this video. I am a convert and am very often explaining to my family about jewish law as many people are misinformed about Orthodox Judaism. Either by media or sad stereotypes people can be very misinformed about our beautiful religion. I myself am not in the orthodox sect but I have great respect for you and how dedicated you are to the Torah and G-d.I send these to my parents and family to not only inform them but show them the Jewish life isn’t always oppressive and sad like how they see in movies. Covering your hair is prominent in many religions and in many different ways. Catholics cover their hair when they attend mass, nuns cover their hair (or use to) as part of their devotion. Muslim women cover their hair, Hindu is the same, Sikh as well. Less so these days, but it use to be. Buddhist nuns shave and cover their heads. It all comes down to the same reason though. It's a part of out beauty.

To hear you say that women have power and should be protected changes my understanding of the how not only the Kabbalah influences Orthodox Judaism but also highlights the similarities between Judaism beliefs/practices and First Nations Peoples understandings of how important hair is.
The Bible speaks of a woman covering her head in order to pray to God, as a sign of reverence and respect. But it also says that it is ugly for a woman to shave her head. That a woman’s own beautiful shiny hair is a reminder of God’s angels. I guess it all comes down to beliefs. As a Christian, my beliefs about my hair are different than the Jewish beliefs.
I thought one’s husband IS her covering. I also don’t see the harm in a physical covering like a scarf or hat, I’m a little confused on an entire wig. Especially one made of human hair. The reason we cover our hair is simply bec the commandment is for our hair to be covered. (Yes, there are also many beautiful kabbalistic explanations) but it is Not for modesty or avoiding vanity. And it doesn't matter how we cover our hair; all that matters is that it is covered. So no, wearing a wig is not a loophole. The reason why Raizel and most Chabad women take care to cover their hair with a wig is bec the Lubavitcher Rebbe preferred a wig in that it's most likely to keep all the hair covered (thereby adding more blessing to the family among other reasons) and can't/won't be easily removed, revealing the hair underneath. So many Chabad women go to great lengths to wear a wig as a head covering, rather than a headscarf. (At home/in privacy though, we can wear a headscarf).

The Orthodox women sure so rock lacefronts and hit up the beauty supply for wig caps. I live around orthodox Jews and good luck finding a wig cap or even a silk stocking in a pinch. Also, they and muslim women buy up all the long skirts and modest dresses in every store nearby!

The Old Testament comes from the Jewish religion. It was for the Jews. The NEW TESTAMENT, which was a result of the teachings of Jesus Christ, is for Christians.(This was why the Pharisees did not like the new teachings and helped to crucify the Christ, as He challenged their power and way of life.) It may be that the Old Testament god is not even the same as the God that Christ spoke of, but a demi-god.
With all the respect Barnowl there is many verses that talked about Jesus and pointed him as the messiah Isaiah , Micah, Daniel, Jeremiah, all those prophets talked about Jesus but also on the same Bible Jesus knew that he will be rejected by the Pharisees not because he challenged the law but because he didn’t agree on how they added more to the Torah and put weight ( more rules) on the people of Israel Religion makes you create your own path instead of Gods along. The New Testament was written by Jewish people that knew he was the messiah the son of God, God himself .
@@threewomenco. The New Testament was written by the early Christians, who were converted to Christianity from Jewism, but also from other societies. It is a different mind-set and life experience to that of Jewism. Yes, the Jews pointed him out to be the coming Messiah who was Jeremiah etc. but that does not mean that He was. A Messiah comes approximately every 2,000 years and the Christ, Who promised to come again, will return sometime soon, hopefully by the end of this century. The Christ is not God himself. He is the first human to reach the fifth Initiation of Resurrection and Ascension and what it truly means spiritually. Christ is the son/sun of God, that greater God, about 'which naught may be said' because He is transcendent and cannot be explained in the words of wo/men. I have been studying religion and spirituality for many years and most of religion does not have an understanding of deeper, esoteric spirituality .The reappearance of The Christ, Who may not come through religion, will change this.

GD didn't tell us to cover our hair. This mitzvah is deduced from the Sota. It was a humiliation for the woman who was suspected of infidelity (and who denied it) to uncover her head before drinking the bitter waters that would determine whether she was innocent (and would be blessed with more children) or would die. This is the source for knowing that married women must cover our hair.
It’s not so simple. In the times of the Talmud, all women covered their hair. Married or single, Jewish or non Jewish. Thus it’s as she said a chook. A mitzvah we don’t completely understand.

As a traditional Catholic I understand completely why you would honor God's command because you love Him, even if you don't fully comprehend it. I mean really, who can know the mind of God! They are not modest, and they are considered idolatry. No gadol hador ever permitted them! Look in to it please, for your own sakes.
