I can ferment it over night by using whey from Kefir Milk. I also make Kefir Milk some times so I use its whey to ferment the grains in just 12-16 hours. And before cleaning it and making a new one I take one cup of that water and then add it in new grains and fresh water and the cycle continue. I am seeing increased size in eggs of my australorp chicken after feeding them this. I will also advise to feed your chicken lots of green with this. Because probiotics also need prebiotics that are found in Green vegetables.

I also add apple cider vinegar, if I dont have any of my home made vinegar-- this accelerates the fermenting process so it is finished in 1.5-2 days. I only use whole grain to maximize the nutritive value that is activated in the fermenting process.

Thank you so much - I have just been 'left' alone in my paradise, 40km from the nearest shops, and with no transport. I've been here for a year, with Mr Angry, but, because of the 'fear factor' I have only let the property about 10 times. Hi I have a few questions. How often do you feed them fermented feed? Why the cheesecloth? I know I use it to keep the fruit flies out of my personal ferments but wouldn't the fruit flies be a desirable addition to the feed? I plan on using your feed recipe when I get my chickens next week and am not sure about the additives and herbs with fermented feed. Do you add them and just ferment the entire batch or do you just ferment the grains then add the "extras" just before feeding? I'm really excited to start my pullets off right (my city allows 3 female and no males) so thanks in advance!
@FreshEggsDaily

I would switch it off with regular feed. The cheesecloth is so ir can breath. A solid lid can cause it to explode.

In my personal ferments I use a cloth cover to prevent fruit flies but I would think they would be a welcome addition or are there other health risks with doing that? Sure you can give this to baby chicks right from the start. The probiotics created by the fermentation is really good for them. Just be really careful it doesn't mold or go bad. Chickens eat 2-3 oz a day regardless of the fermenting process. If they eat less something is wrong. That is why I tell folks to not only feed fermented feed as a whole feed but rather as a supplement. Which is why I have my gamebird feed an I just mix it with my fermented feed as a 1/3 ratio
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 11 месяцев назад
Chickens will eat only until they reach their energy/nutrient level for the day, so the more nutrient-rich fermented feed means they'll eat less of it. Chickens should never be given game bird feed. It's way too high in protein...

@stevemolnar2020 7 лет назад
Lisa, I realize this post is a over a year old but can you tell me, do you use any scratch grains or just organic scratch and feed. I personally can't afford the organic stuff so I don't use it. However, I thought I might try my hand at fermenting so I thought I would start out with a bag of organic scratch grains. This might make it more affordable to use the good organic stuff.
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 7 лет назад
You can use any scratch grains or whole/cracked grain chicken feed. The fermentation is going to boost the health benefits of whatever you use. I agree that organic is probably better, but more expensive, so whatever you can comfortably afford is just fine. One thing to note, your chickens WILL eat less if the feed is fermented, so the organic feed will go further and end up costing less in the long run than it would to feed unfermented feed. Just something to think about.

I gave up on feed plates because they get so excited and throw it around like drunken sailors anyway, so I have what I call a "feeding bed". In short, its where I chuck all their feed types into a raised garden bed and they can make as much mess as they want within that raised garden bed, kind of like a giant feed plate👍. It's an exciting experiment because what they don't devour sprouts as the food scraps, dry feed and fermented feed and also the fermented juices have created an incredibly fertile pit of soil, that not only attracts heaps of bugs and larvae of all varieties but also made a very potent microbiome for the chickens to muck around with.

If you're fermenting I would use regular oats or oat groats. Otherwise, rolled is what I add to their regular feed.

Not really. When you sprout seeds, you rinse and refill the water each day. So they don't ferment, they just start to grow.

Lisa I would only ferment a regular daily ration. So 1/2 cup per hen or less.

my chickens definitely do not eat less of this :/ also how is this for chicks or younger birds? or other animals for that matter...... pigs? goats?
@FreshEggsDaily

Yes baby chicks can eat it too. They should absolutely be eating less fermented feed because of the increased energy and nutrients it provides.

this is… acceptable 😁! pretty uncommon for me cause i love chickens they are so cute! I make them small pies out of backdoor material and and cakes or salads so this is a good vid but i still think i pie would have been good… (cause other people feeds their chickens COMMONERS food when i say commoners food i mean regular pellets)

Thanks! Very nice video. I would personally not use distilled water though. You can do your own research, but distilled water is very unnatural and unhealthy. Get a Berkey Filter. They are awesome. You can purify your own water for dirt cheap.
