In the past few years attention has increased into consumer right to repair, and legislation across multiple US states aims to cement your right to fix your own devices. Despite this progress, big tech companies like Apple have tried to co-opt or twist the wording of these laws to suit their own interests and gut their effectiveness. Today let's dive deeper into the existing laws and policies of big tech companies, especially Apple, and how they've hijacked the right to repair movement

If they serialize parts they don't support repair. If they don't provide schematics they don't support repair. If they overprice parts they don't support repair. Louis Rossmann would be glad to hear you speak of this 😊

Man Luke I gotta say, I respect you a lot. in 2021 I started watching a lot of Apple tech RU-vidrs when planning to switch to iPhone and Mac. A few years after switching, I really only watch you and a handful of others. You don't gloss over R2R and you give a platform to a lot of the downsides of the programs Apple has put in to place to 'address' R2R. It really appears that you are passionate about repair, and I learn so much from watching you. After watching Marques Brownlee's video inside Apple HQ that received criticism for being a propaganda piece for Apple, I lost faith in a lot of the bigger channels to cover R2R in an accurate manner. But seeing you grow your channel while accurately covering and offering criticism to Apple while still being a mac fan gives me hope. I hope as your channel gets bigger you continue to stay true to your roots!

Who in the hell are you to tell me what to do with my physical stuff..? Good to see more creators calling this out. Honestly most Apple users could not care one bit what Apple does to them or their devices, i call it A.S.S (Apple Stockholm Syndrome). I've raised their behaviours using people's cars as an analogy, ie replacing tyres disabling their car, or only being able to transport approved passengers and luggage, via only assigned depots. They look at me thinking I'm mad and don't care their expensive phone is somewhat like that. Apple's longer term behaviour and unsurpassed profits had encouraged other companies to try follow which is bad for everyone.

Thank you so much for openly criticizing Apple, unlike Marquess Brownlee, you actually care about your audience by providing well researched videos. I really hope that future devices from every manufacturer will be repair and upgrade friendly. I addition to that we also need to get back what has been taken away from us, user friendly features like: User removable batteries, expandable storage, the headphone jack. These features aren't dated at all, and anyone who claims otherwise has been mislead. User removable batteries are important because batteries are wearable parts. Expandable storage is important because companies shouldn't be upselling you to higher capacity versions or a cloud subscription. And headphone jacks are important because true wireless headphones are bad for the environment and provide another source of income for companies because they can sell you their Bluetooth Headphones. Thank you again for actually caring about the environment/consumers instead of worrying about being a "brand-safe" content creator like MKBHD.

I love the see how Western Media screams about environmental changes pushing China, India, Bangladesh and other Eastern countries to shoot down its factories, but at the same time they stay silent about major corporations trying their best to combat against the right to repair which results in huge piles of good hardware thrown away. My first cellphone from 2007 was much more performant than the super computers in 60-s that were used to send people in the space and to calculate the perfect conditions for nuclear reactors, but apparently it's not enough to render a modern website with a video on it. Keep fighting the good fight man, I long gave up on ever seeing a meaningful right to repair law pass in this country. I've spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of my time over the last 3 years fighting for right to repair, going so far as being interviewed by the White House Economic Council re: right to repair, and I gave up. I gave up for the same reason I told them. Unless the law specifically limits the amount of profit a company can make off of replacement parts, the manufacturer will ALWAYS price them so high where it doesn't make sense to do it yourself or pay a third party repair shop to do it when the manufacturer's repair service barely costs more than the part alone. This will never happen in America.

@nylotical 19 дней назад
@@kquote0364 STEALING IS FREE! You can’t undercut black market stripped parts when you paid people to create, ship, advertise, and distribute those parts. easy, apple supplies parts with good prices then label those with "repair parts" within code system. now if this person that has two iphones of the same model then they have a option within settings app to link parts to your another phone by account unlocking. it will unlock the part for any part with that account. another solution. on a phone being sold, give a user a option to unlock all parts for anyone and everyone to use as second hand parts. if the parts was stolen phone it locks the parts to tbe worthless when added to another phone by adding a kernal panic if gets the "stolen phone" code when booting up.
@nylotical
@nylotical 16 дней назад
@@kquote0364 terrible solution. Can't happen. Apple would only be selling at a loss because stealing is free and can/will always undercut retail. Apple still has to create, distribute, ship these over water or air (idk), and then somehow be aware of "the market" for stolen parts. Sunrise gave an actually solid solution; stolen phone parts remain locked while a sold phone (whether it's for parts or operational) can remotely be unlocked by a user by slightly bombarding the user with a notification to make a decision on locking or unlocking the parts.

Well I came to find out 2 months later it stopped working after trying to use the measure app which relies on the LiDAR sensor. This is all pretty concerning. I do wonder about the efficacy of a federal bill and how much more effort it takes to lobby and pass than state bills when Apple and other manufacturers are generally content to follow a single state's repair laws nation wide. I also wonder if activation locks actually reduce the number of stolen phones, like do criminals know not to target Apple devices because they can be remotely locked and unsellable or are they still indiscriminate.

I was actually for parts-pairing and all the Apple shenanigans. It would’ve prevented stolen devices from being sold for parts and decreased their value at the very least. It gave a sense of security. That is, until I tried fixing my and another iPhone’s screen and battery. It’s a nightmare. Made 10x worse by parts pairing, which to this day I was unable to fix. Why do I need 50 screwdriver bits, a heat gun and lots of careful prying and dealing with hidden screws? This is not repairable. Especially given that my only other “authorized” option is going to Apple, which are happy to charge me almost the entire resale value of the phone to replace it for me. I am now pro-Right to Repair. Apple really needs to address this. And if they don’t, the law will.

What is the legal difference between buying a car and a computer? It is a simple purchase. If I buy a car I can repair it any way I want. Of course I understand that self repair and using third party parts can annulate the manufacturer's guaranteee. I rather have a bigger MacBook like the MacBook Pro 2012 that I can repair myself, then something I can not open. I think there are two issues at play here: Apple needs to allow third party parts to easily get "activated", and to make first-party parts avail at reasonable prices.. but they have to let third party parts makers do their thing at likely lower pricing! Only then will bricking of all activation-locked phones make sense.. and Apple and/or authorized third parties should be allowed to refurb or de-activate these bricked phones so functioning parts don't end up as e-waste. Apple could do this.. but will they?

The problem here is people use this argument to support their stand because it is only *PARTLY* true, and this applies to *LOTS* of industries ... not just consumer electronics. Lets make motor vehicles as a perfect example (this equally applies to mining equipment, aeronautics (though to a lesser degree) and even medical equipment, but I'll stick to cars as that is something that nearly *EVERYONE* can relate to. If you buy a brand new Toyota Landcruiser ... in AUD it would be about say $100k. If you were to buy the vehicle as parts, it would cost in the region of $500-$800k. The reason for the great discrepancy is the manufacturer markup on their parts (typically it is in region of 400-500% ... no I am *NOT* making this up) - even if the manufacturer doesn't actually make that part themselves. Case in point ... the hall effect sensor on the drive drive on of said Landcruiser to make the speedometer work is actually made by Bosch. You can buy it from them from $35AUD. It is a "genuine" part. The same part ... when bought in a Toyota box is ... are you ready for this ... $650AUD. It is the *SAME* part ... but in a cardboard box with "TOYOTA GENUINE PARTS" sticker stuck on the outside ... that is a 1800% markup ... on a part that Toyota themselves DOES NOT MAKE. The reason that we have a market for "stolen parts" is twofold. 1. The manufacturers want to preserve their obscene markup on their parts. 2. They want to force obsolescence so that at some point you *HAVE* to buy new and they can do this by restricting the availability of parts. It costs a lot to keep inventory of parts (it really does) so they don't want to keep any significant amount of parts for any length of time that they can avoid, but the last thing that they want is for someone to "fill the niche" as it prevents them from exercising point #2. If parts *ARE* available at a reasonable cost (and believe me ... a 100% markup is "reasonable") then point #1 is moot as there is no point in spending the money on having to de-solder a part from an existing device, and then repackage it. It would actually be cheaper to buy the part "new" ... but the manufacturers don't want to allow this. So "NO" .. I have *ZERO* sympathy for the likes of Apple, Samsung, etc. They *created* the problem themselves and they want to cry poor when the general population gets jack of being bent over the barrel and getting the full pineapple ... crown and all. This is not a new problem, and not limited to just one industry. It happens the world over. The real root cause of the problem is greed. If the parts are available at a reasonable rate, then it dramatically drops the demand for stolen products "for parts" (it will never be zero but you can drive it to close to zero by making it economically nonviable). Those who continue to swallow and then regurgitate the various manufacturers military grade levels of bullshit to support their points are in my mind, at best either highly ignorant or at worst, oxygen thieves. /BGM

the problem is where's the data that phone thieves are out to steal your phone to sell parts, besides usually reasons are more gonna be like to actually use the phone or to access your account information (and don't get me started on how the latter often happens without theft like icloud leaks, without advanced data protection/end to end encryption enabled your shit is gonna not be that hard for people to get into, esp if ypu got shit passwords and other problems). Truth is most of these locked phones were owned by organizations that forgot to unlock them for sale, turning them into worthless ewaste. Also if third party parts existed there would be competition to easily discourage this anyways.

I'm not a government apologist, in any way. But, I could definitely see how politicians, acting in good faith, could believe industry experts on some of these issues. For instance, the bricking of component parts beyond just the logicboard in devices that are activation-locked could easily be sold as a practice designed to make iPhones harder for thieves to part-out, potentially reducing the incentive to steal the phone. While tech-savvy people might recognize that con, a politician very well might.

Apple took their first steps into this BS about 25 years ago. Sun Microsystem started "fingerprinting" replaceable parts. Basic parts like a CD drive you could buy at Fry's for $15 wouldn't work to replace the broken Sun part because they put a electronic fingerprint on Sun parts. So you have to pay three or four times as much to get a fingerprinted part. Apple started doing the same thing fingerprinting parts and other companies. I remember when I had to SysAdmin a bunch of Mac Pro's for a graphic and media departments and later my own. Apple's would say what graphics cards were in the Mac Pro, but if the card died, if you bought a off the shelf replacement Apple drivers would complain and be a nightmare to get it to work. So Apple has been playing this make repair expensive game a long time.
