Has anyone tried using super capacitors as a way to store some of the regen energy? Is such a design legal??? People talk about the batteries getting too warm in regen "braking".

Michkov the powertrain hardware is homologated for the season, they have a wildcard to update parts in case of critical problems. but software development is free.

most important is the battery pack. It's a lose of innovotion, not put all teams to push battery technologies.

Nice-oscar it will improve top speed but add complexity power loss and points of failure for a car that's a city car which is more interested on 0-60 acceleration and miles per charge.

It might be coming sometime, but Tesla is already involved in Formula E. They are currently aiming to diversify into being an energy company and so probably won't be in season 4... maybe 5. I'm waiting on McLaren and BMW to get a team, I have heard that Scuderia Ferrari is getting really interested in FE as well

Dillon Borges I'm not sure if the scuderia will enter FE because in a statement they said straight up "We are not interested in electric cars" and that is also why none of their hybrid vehicles can go full electric and act as just boosters

They are focused more on Electric GT which is their series where they are making all the cars and are in charge of development.

wouldn't an energy recovery system like the ones used in formula 1 extend the battery life allowing longer and more aggressive racing?

Most electric motors act as generators when they're not energized, the real issue here is a way of storing the recovered energy as a battery cannot be charged during few seconds of deceleration. They would need extra capacitors or even supercapacitors for that. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that difficult for racing teams to get their hands on some of those puppies though.

how I understand this race: engineers are not allowed to improve the battery, the power is limited so it cannot be better than Formula 1, and they added the fan boost unfair thing which kills all the competition. Come on, this is a race to make people believe EVs are not better than ICE cars a little bit longer, at least it look like it.

Not sure why the multispeed gearbox is for, electronic drive transmission with 3 phase synchronous motor can deliver constant torque over a broad range of RPM

Lower gear ratios still multiply the wheel torque.

Given that they are using skinny treaded tires on a very light car, I'm surprised they need any torque multiplication before they reach the limit of traction. Even then, it seems a torque converter (such as the one in the Koenigsegg Regera) might be a better setup than a gearbox.

Representing a 2 speed gearbox with 2 gearwheels instead of 2 gearwheel pairs is somewhat misleading. Accordingly, a direct drive should not be pictured with only 1 gearwheel. Nothing is driven by a single gear wheel.

They talk a lot about replacing cars with fossil fuels with electric ones, but what do you do with so much lithium battery? where will they be discarded? because lithium is also a danger as well as oil.

Give up! Most people didn't even get your Battery Chicken jokes, and those who did found them unfunny. Formula E is exciting because 1) great tracks, with extra turns because the top speeds are lower than F1 2) Insane acceleration and torque. Can you imagine world class racing with a motor driving the wheels directly over fixed transmission? That's how much torque these motors have. And with each team making more technology decisions each season, the technical side is only going to advance faster and be more exciting.

This racing series is just disgracefull. Standard All weather tires, no downforce, the slowest pro racing series. This is a sad disgrace for racing. If you want Innovation and efficiency look to LMP1 and F1. This series is as boring as it is obsolete!

really? FE is super innovative. They use standard all weather tires because they WANT to race on street tracks. Their initial goal until season 5 is to show people how fast electric cars can go, that's why they race on street tracks. They are currently experimenting with FE cars on real tracks for season 5 where they will tear up the times set by petrol cars... the days of petrol cars are numbered friend, even in motorsport they cannot compete with electric cars.

Leodoz As This statement is sadly very wrong. Look up Audi gtron, ptg twchnology and 3rd gen biofuels and you will find the electric car already obsolete because the ICE is already better at protecteting the environment
