I have lived 70 years and have flown a multitude of aircraft, worked on cars and disassembled a multitude of machines. However, three things that are and remain complete and total magic to me are women, music, and sewing machines. Hats off mate.

Greetings Dan. I stayed thru the video and enjoyed every minute of it. I spent 11 years as a TV producer of Informational, Educational and Instructional television for the Feds, and I have to say you did an excellent job of production and presentation. As best I can tell, the person who invented the Victor machine was a student of both sewing machines and motion picture projectors. The similarity is amazing; just different names, like awl versus claw. Great job!! Glen (Molasses Cookies) from Maryland

Thanks Dan, fascinating machines, Them old engineers were clever folk creating a machine for stitching soles together such intricate parts but simple stitching, so many things need to happen to get it perfect.

Great video as always Dan! I must say I recently became a cobbler apprentice (thanks to you and other YT cobblers who inspired me). I was in the other day and I wanted to learn how the Landis outsole stitcher worked and I tried my hand at it. I must say it’s much more difficult than it looks. You can go off track easily, break needles etc. It was a surprisingly sensitive machine when it came to speed as well. But I’ll continue to practice on it along with the sanders and finishers, and hope one day I’ll be as good as my teacher and you!

@@dustinwilkinson6264 I must say I’m a Pepsi guy, but I’m also an athlete (Goalkeeper [Soccer]) so I keep my soda intake to a minimum and my water intake to a max. I’m learning this trade more so as serious hobby than a career, but also to have something to fall back on should university not pan out the way I hope it does. But I’m going in to the shop every week three days a week, just finished up my first 6 days. My teacher has over 30 years experience. He is also a very kind and patient man. I’ll be going back to school in the fall for second year, but will continue to come down at least once every other week to continue to learn from him.

Thanks for the demo. I do my own resoling, but, the one thing I (obviously) can't do as a hobbyist is to sole stitch, I have to find a kind cobbler who'll channel and stitch my soles on for me. Sadly, our local cobbler doesn't do goodyear welted shoes anymore so i have to go up to Cardiff. I've considered hand stitching, i have the tools, but I've never seen a neat job done... I am confident I can put a new welt on... as many cobblers do as they often lack a machine. Thanks Dan, fantastic videos. Marc.

Heya Dan, this was a great video. Don't know where to suggest this idea though so I thought I'll just post it here. How about taking a cheap pair of shoes just from a cheap shoe shop or even a supermarket and then trying to upgrade them to make them higher quality? Something like putting new stitched soles on, toe plates and things like that and see how much they can be improved, how much it would cost and then how they'd compare afterwards to a more expensive shoe out of the box.

Hello Dan. I watched the whole video which I found to be interesting, and you did well to fit it into a video of under twenty minutes. One comment I want to make; In an episode of Sherlock Holmes, the tv series set in around 1900s London when I suppose most shoes were leather, Watson makes a comment on a friend of theirs who has fallen on hard times . The reason he made that comment was that he noticed his friends shoes had been repaired rather than replaced with new ones when worn out. It made me think do wealthy people always buy new rather than repair what are comfortable shoes? I never forgot that piece of trivia and perhaps you can answer.

I'd like to recommend you the best AA tweezers I have ever had that might be good for taking threads out. While perforated music disc repair tweezers are the best, they are near impossible to find anymore. For today's needs of fine tweezers go with Hakko. Designed in Japan, made in the north of Italy. Premium performance and feel with dual tempered prongs to be springy yet incredibly strong. So strong in fact I can bend all other tweezers with them. I am alarmed with the value and performance of them.
