What hurts most is when the person who does that gets 50k+ votes and the person who actually took the time to make the background as expressive as the character gets 5.
It's because of the algorithm. More time spent drawing backgrounds = less frequent art posts. No matter what site you're on, posting daily or multiple times daily is the only surefire way for exposure.
I draw backgrounds too, along with characters. I don't know... It just pleases you. Drawing background first, adjusting lights... Trying to make it settle with the scene and mood... And you also have variety... It's far more interesting than just drawing the characters, which for most part is same repetitive stuff.
@@reservoir4798 Ah I meant I draw backgrounds with characters, and not just backgrounds only. I edited it. Yeah, obviously the anatomy sucks, but now we have many 3d pose apps that can basically give you the idea how the characters will look. I also pose myself in front of mirror _(oh no)_ to get the pressure of skin right.
@@GitaeKimKingOfSeoul I think the bee movie is just so hilariously bad that everyone memes on it. Also the fact that the movie itself just spawns so much meme potential lol
I'm a 3D artist, not 2D, but I feel this so much. Just when you think you're done, you've got this big last thing you should spend time on to improve your work, but you just "stylize" it to save time
@@Archenhailor I don't even know how 3d works, and that's an entirely different dimension I'm not used to working in. It's a good idea but that path will take many years to build on 😬
This is why drawing in black and white is good. You don't need a background when there's no colors, no one will think about it, no one will notice, no one will see... right... right...? 😭
I actually do tend to draw backgrounds when drawing in black and white (schetches being an exception). When drawing in black and white you can focus on adding interesting textures since they will be more apparent in black and white. This applies to the background as well. You could use a few textures there as well and make it more interesting. A white background is fine and does the job well enough for a black and white drawing, a more interesting background could make your art piece even better.
I will see it. I always see it. I am the guy who flips random artist's artwork. I am the guy who zooms in on the lineart. I am the guy who no one likes. And I am the guy who will see it
I dunno; you could always just lasso and copy-paste different parts of the character, then warp them so they look like hills or something. Totally seamless! /s
I never draw backgrounds, only do it if it's nesessary, or, like in anime, to show emotions (like pink with circles, or black/dark-blue/dark-purple with stripes) And totally never on paper. That really sucks for me
Kindred soul 🥲😭 I keep torturing myself to try and learn some landscape painting and drawing, but it ALWAYS becomes this gelatinous structure instead haha
@@nairocamilo ... I don't know, isn't it easy? I never learned drawing, but I never found any difficulty in painting backgrounds. Just by looking a picture, you are able to color it, isn't it? If you know how the colors and program works, it's very easy...
@@artblockblue Very handy way to think of that! This seems especially effective for flowing forms like trees, rivers, or clouds, but it could really apply to anything, right? If strictly rigid and square characters can feel expressive, then the sky's the limit for expressive backgrounds too. I'll have to give this a try. Maybe thinking about trees in a similar way to gesturing hands could lead to some interesting results.
@@creativebeetle think of the environment especially! Is it a party? Decorate everything! Is it sad? Make everything a little droopy, add softer colors! Think of edges especially! Round ends often add a softer touch while sharp ends add a "meaner" touch [I hope that makes sense!]
What a creative background that doesn't take away from the actual art but finishes the art in a way that more than satisfactory in looks, very creative that it matches the angle of the stomach. Very good background (lmao me when rectangle)
Always link your drawing to a specific scenery that way the background is easy to choose, either it's malicious (green/purple), solitude, nostalgia (warm and cold colors combined), enraged (warm to fiery), or just happy (saturated and bright colors)
SO TRUE !!!!!! you only know how to do the characters but the background is the hardest part you don't know what kind of background or what kind of colors you need
@@MrOiram46 But If I do this I get bored and stop with the drawing, because background is extremely dificult, and I wanted to get to the interesting part quick 😭😭😭

Goddamn, I don't know how to describe it, but just a plan hot pink square made the background feel like a background, and then rotating it just a little bit made it so much better!!! These are things that you as an artist think the people aren't going to care about, but seeing the before and after makes you appreciate minimalist styling!!!

dude i love drawing background so much and i only realized recently but its so fun to flesh out a character by their surroundings. what sort of places do they go what sort of trinkets do they own what do they like to see and be around most its just. so fun.!
Intricate backgrounds are great, but I honestly have no issue with simple backgrounds in character-focused art like this. I don't even care if it's just a white void if the main focus is something else.
I only draw backgrounds if the reference picture has one otherwise I'll just splash random colours a blur it in a way that looks colourful but still makes you focus on the painting
i just spent like 5 minutes with it slowed all the way down just to be met with the bee movies script and that was one of the funniest things ive experienced 10/10
That's an in-demand skill! But yeah, figuring out the most appealing way to blend your style of characters with your environments can be a very long and tricky process.
I really feel the same way. I never really had much problem with objects and machines or sceneries, but drawing characters is a fucking nightmare. I just have no idea how the proportions of the human body work. It's super frustrating and it's one of the main reasons I gave up on drawing. It's just super frustrating to know that I have this perfect drawing of GlaDos from Portal with all the intricate machinery and wiring, but I can't draw a fucking simple humanoid character for the life of me. One of the main reasons I wanted to draw was because I wanted to bring my imaginary characters to life. But that dream got sadly crushed lol. My respect goes out to character artists. I seriously don't understand how they do it, it's actually like arcane magic to me. The human body, and organic bodies in general, are just too fluid and curvy. It's so difficult to comprehend that shape in a 2D space. What pisses me off the most is that some people don't even use construction but they still make really good character designs. Just think of every cartoon you've ever watched. How the fuck did they give Phineas a triangular head and still make it look good. It's wild. I just can't understand that. (For context this is when I was just learning to draw from scratch, and I haven't drawn anything in like 3 years since then lol.)
@@qwertydavid8070 Yes! That's the problem I have! My characters are kinda simple and cartoonish so whenever I see anyone draw detailed characters I'm sure to tell them how great of an artist they are! I've always felt drawing backgrouns so easy compared to characters. Also, please don't give up :( You shouldn't try to overcomplicate them with detailed characters. Try making cartoonish characters and then you'll be slowly progressing towards detailed characters. I know you can do it!
“According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyways. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.”
I HATE having a white background, so I normally add shadows or sometimes stars, I add something. I don't spend HOURS on a background when the only thing people are going to pay attention to is the main thing I drew, but I Make it as expressive as possible. It's a rule I made for myself, I have 10 minutes to make a nice expressive background, that way I make it look good without it taking up so much time.
Well the thing is, Your drawing is what should have attention, Not the background. However if you make the background blurry it’ll look way better, But generally, I still like it without because some backgrounds have a lot of unnecessary details that catch your eye even when blurred. That distracts.
I was making my profile picture earlier but didn't want a blank background so I changed the whole scene to make it a rainy day lol but I usually just do the gradient background and sometimes add some lightnings and random sparkles maybe.
I think your picture looks great but you need to learn value, your hair looked a bit saturated while standing in the dark place meanwhile me personally that shades at the face could’ve done better. Good idea, I think you have your own styles but you could improve more tbh.
What hurts more is that I always spend so much time making the backgrounds in most of my drawings and people never talk about it unless there is some very particular character involved in that specific background 😭
