James Wiseman should have been the missing piece to the Warriors dynasty v2, instead here we are today with Wiseman failing to crack the Pistons rotation. in just a three years span, what happened to James Wiseman?
The NBA is full of one dimensional athletic players who can’t do anything but dunk and jack up bad threes like him he isn’t anything special and know he will bounce around the league until he is inevitably bounced out permanently they don’t have any skills whatsoever outside of a few guys they don’t shoot at a good percentage dribble or play defense this is the crap they are putting on the court and a lot of fans are tuning out the ratings are going down like a hooker on Figueroa Street.
I don't know why you assume he is a kind and caring dude, but something here isn't right. His motivation and development or some type of mental health problem. Maybe he's just really too dumb to play at the highest level.
@ikedougenhouser3585Bennett at least did something in college. Wiseman played 3 games and is currently the 4th worst Center on the best team in the league.
Wiseman fell short of expectations and all but comparing him to Anthony Bennett is still so disrespectful lol. Bennett was the most unprepared player I've ever seen. I wasn't even too impressed with his college highlights like who's idea was that smh?
As a warriors fan most of what you said was correct, but I wouldn't say he has slow foot speed or lack of motor, it's his reaction speed, he was always a beat slow, at the lower levels this was papered over by his athleticism and his ability to recover. Also probably his biggest issue offensively you didn't mention, his hands... they were terrible. So many bobbled entry passes and so many blown ally ops. Such an underratted thing for a big man to have. Wish him the best though, he really does have the all athletic gifts and you could tell all he wants to do is learn and get better. But maybe he should spend more time in the film room than practicing a mid range.
He was way behind in development at 19 when he was drafted. He only played a half season (mostly starts) when he got the big MCL tear that kept him out for a year and a half. When he came back, he was mentally and physically even further regressed than when he was injured. He never even played a full season with the Warriors, but after he came back, he sucked so bad that he was clearly not going to be ready to help The current timeline Warriors. So he got traded. He literally played 60 games for the Warriors, but the Warriors had seen enough. Mentally he is just lost out there. He always had a low motor, but he’s so inattentive out there now, it’s ridiculous. He just stands around so much.
I think what we have seen is what he is. He has ALL the physical tools you could ask for, and enough offensive ability to produce more and more consistently than he has. Talking about "developement" it's up to the individual to put on the work to improve one's skills and it's been apparent he hasn't otherwise we woouldn't be having this convo. Might sound corny but he has no dawg in him, just watching his play and body language there is no urgency. Some people just don't really want to hoop like that, would've been cool to see him reach his potential but he's just not that guy. Maybe he could be a Javaale type role player down the road if he just buys into it mentally
You can't fix someone's IQ. Look at Westbrook. One of the dumbest dudes out there on the floor. It's a shame because something during his development hurt him.
I slightly agree with some of your points but only because you accidentally made them. This 100% has to do with AAU, middle school, High School, and college basketball. There is a reason there are levels to this game. So I agree sort of that it's on him but at the same time the NBA isn't practicing defense. You have to already be there defensively before you get there. All they do in the NBA is basically throw you into their system and practice their system which includes very little d plus you're guarding non pros or g leaguers. Then the most important part is the money. This kid has spent his entire life with money in his pocket to play offense and then he gets a big NBA contract which might not be big for the NBA but for life in general it's a lot of money. A lot of guys lose that passion the minute the ink dries. Basically, he's a victim of a system that ALL these morons thought would help the players but it just ruins them. That's why overseas or euro players are taking over the league. Jokic is the best player in the NBA by a lot and people who deny that no nothing about basketball but most people don't realize Sabonis was top 3 last season in analytics which show the true play of a player. Doncic has and off year last year but he'll be top 5 again this year. Wemby, Giannis, Embiid, Markkenan, and every team in the NBA has at least 1 former Yugoslavian player but some have 2 or 3. Plus they say Vezenkov and V. Micic are really those dudes as will come out like Doncic and Jokic soon. This is AAU and western culture problem period. Is it on Wiseman too? Of course but also I think he is a victim in it too, he is just a VERY young kid. They should make then play at least 2 season in NCAA. Only I'm super rare circumstances should someone be allowed to skip. Basically, take a high school LeBron and put him in a real NBA game. If he can put on or at least maintain then you can skip the 2 years.
Thanks for the vid! I might be one of the few Wiseman fans out there. And this is one of the only videos I see that does a good analysis of his short comings. I think player development would be a good fix. I think he needs to do some soul searching, take time out to actually develop. Being with Draymond would make 1 think that he'd learn how to read offenses and be in the right place for defensive plays. I think he'd be more valuable to any team as a defensive stalwart or rim protector. But he fancies himself to be a Jokic type of player. He is young. He can start off being a defensive role player and play himself into being the star he wants to be. Question is how much goodwill does he have left for other teams to take a chance. Funny thing is, he might end up with the warriors again.
If he could just concentrate on rebounding and defense, he’d be a solid addition to any team. Hard to improve his bball iq on both sides of the ball though.
@@RQeeb-os1jb 1. monte can't coach to save his life. 2. Monte and Kerr coach the same way. 3. So unless someone succeeds in X situation you're blind to their potential? I guess you're one of those people who lack foresight. Even Dwight Howard had to play in China, I guess he wasn't talented, right?
Plenty of teams would roll the dice. But he is utterly lost on the court since he came back from his 18 months not injury time. He was only with the Warriors 60 games but that was enough. Pistons see they can’t play him right now because he sucks too much.
I think he needs time, a lot of it. He needed to develop in college over that first year but was screwed over big time. He will be fine and a serviceable big in a year or two.
That college decision + the warriors draft were the worst things for Wise. He was a raw talent never given the opportunity to develop and now he seems to old to some teams. Why work on and hope he develops when you can get on a younger big man who doesn’t have the history. Sad to see. I hope he stays hooping and gets a coach who will aggressively address his deficiencies.
no drive and cant play the game. It is not about opportunity. This guy has been given so many opportunities. He just isnt smart enough to put it together.
the warriors were bad when they drafted him and they develop young talent all the time usually way lower in the draft. it was the perfect opportunity for him actually with a versatile system and players who would elevate his game. top draft picks shouldn’t suck that bad at first and get good years later
I think the warriors were a good spot for him. Warriors are generally good with developing players and he wasn’t the only young guy in the organization at the time. Moody, kuminga, and poole all developed and became solid players
Wow this was an exceptional assessment of Wiseman. This is exactly why alot of players despite their athletic abilities dont make it. IQ, Motor and Footwork makes a huge difference at this level.
All of his hard work paid off he signed a $40 million rookie contract guaranteed he’s already made more money than most make during a lifetime by far congratulations
Just a typical story of an elite that had been winning throughout lives due to their talent alone. The moment things start getting difficult and they have to work through it, they collapse. It's sad, but I always think NBA scouting really underrates the mental aspects of talent
@@sanderlange1932There are a few parameters they use, but in the end, this it is still a gamble. Look at Poole, with the Wizards, some fail when they enter NBA, some fail signing their first big deal.
Athletic Freak of a Big Man with a 7'6 wingspan with a nice touch around the basket and a solid Jumper sounds like a match made in heaven. On one hand you see all the natural talent Wiseman possesses and it still boggles my mind how he has not put it all together.
This happens more than people think. Since the year 2000 to now there have been plenty of busts in just the top 3 picks. It is tough to know if these kids game will translate to NBA stardom or even a good player.
I understand the need to come into the league as early as you can, nba prospects used to be better coming out of college because they had more time to develop.
just needs the right situation. i don’t think he’ll ever live up to his draft pick or what everyone thought he would be but i still think he can be a good rotation man
I have never seen him set an actual screen. He stands in a spot, goes into the stance, but there's no intent, timing, he never waits, he slips every screen. He just does not understand the game at all
Truthfully he was doomed from the start. He wasn’t developed in college and the warriors didn’t give him enough time to play through mistakes. The offensive and defensive systems at the warriors wasn’t right for him either.
No question, drafting has been poor after they drafted Steph. Poole helped them win a championship, I will tip my hat, but otherwise he was fool's gold. He showed following how much garbage he really is.
@@johnreesekl6249 i dont know if poole is garbage. he might not be a max player or a cornerstone player on a team. but hes well capable of being an elite scoring combo guard off the bench. I think a quality scoring threat off the bench is reasonable value for a 28th pick in the draft. I also like both of the rookies that the warriors brought in this year. Neither look to be super stars, but I think they can both be quality rotation pieces.
ESPN and Rivals both had James Wiseman as the best player in the country. Meanwhile 247 had Anthony Edwards. Safe to say one was more accurate than the other.
like on any other team to be drafted by, warriors are the hardest to grow in. anywhere else he coulda been drafted is almost 100% better situation for him to learn and grow without the other guys
I knew him when he was a kid the problem is he hit an insane growth spurt like 7th 8th grade then high school range to the point he had no high school competition because his height so he never developed the rest of the skill he needed for the NBA level
Him and Bagley both, they average less than 20 mins in Detroit currently, but their Per 36 stats have them as 20-10 guys. If they just got more playing time, would they be better?
The crazy thing was Rookie Pre-Injury James looked pretty good. Granted he made mistakes but comparing that time period to his game now is like night & day
I feel as if if you send them to a team like San Antonio before Wendy, or just the heat without all the superstars you can be a top 10 top 5 center I believe
From the middle of the he first season i had a bad feeling about him. When you say talent, i dont know what your talking about exactly. All i see is a very tall guy that can run and jump. I expected slow footspeed as not alot of 7 footers can switch on to swing men and guards but his Rim protecting insticts are non existent. Unfortunately i think 2 seasons in the g league and probable then 2 years in the nba would make him ready but by then he'll already be closer to 30 than 20
He lost his rotation spot with the Pistons in the preseason. On the bright side, he’s still young. Hopefully he goes somewhere someone can bring him back to basics, be it in the G League or Europe or wherever, and be at least a productive player in the NBA as he approaches 30. But even that is not probable considering how little he learned from Joker’s old coach, who became his player development coach with the Warriors.
it's a shame cause I thought warriors were actually going to have a proper center for the first time in ages, but clearly Wiseman was is not prepared for the NBA, I reckon he should've had another year or 2 in college and who knows, might've gotten some of it figured out
He still has potential. Big men, classic center,.. take longer to develop. He has 15/10 upside. Solid nba career if he works. If not, he’ll still earn 100+ mil. I hope he ups his intensity and defensive effort. He can still contribute to a winner.
I’ve seen him hold up in switches, I don’t think he has a lack of lateral quickness, he was ALWAYS played in drop coverage which didn’t play to his strengths as a potentially switchable defender. Also never helped he lacked good poa defenders
One time when the Sixers came to Detroit this year, both Jalen Duren and Marvin Bagley were out. Embiid scored the easiest 40 I’ve ever seen and left the game early, and James Wiseman fouled out. A tale of two very different paths in the league.
If Wiseman was drafted into a team with fewer expectations, he would’ve had strong averages, and would’ve at least had more of a chance to develop his confidence, and play through his mistakes.
@@OK-yy6qzyeah but pistons are already bad and they barely developing cade I think amen brother is the best player on that team he has a higher ceiling
@@Moneymanmac30so he can't go to a team with above average expectations, but he can't go to a team with low expectations either? What teams could he go to? It's not up to the team to develop the player, it's up to the player.
James not playing in Memphis and the Covid situation really helped him finess the NBA! If you spent a whole year just watching a championship team and having hall of famers calling you "big ticket" and tryna show you the ropes and you still don't know where to be when you're on the court that means you lack the desire to know and improve. Better yet, if you're in the G-league and can't dominate that competition then that says alot. There are people in this world that are with no exaggeration 1000x better at what they do then James at what he does and those people will never earn $18 million even if they lived multiple lifetimes, so he should run away with that rookie contract like a bandit!!!
When he was with GSW it seemed like his offensive upside was a major distraction from his defensive development. At the time they didn't need his scoring they needed his defense and rebounding/ He was after Looney's job and thar is w Looney does. Not sure how/why he didn't get better should have been a natural progression 🤔
@@robertofigueiredo5212why give minutes to him though golden state a solid team didn’t see the need to now even Detroit a terrible team doesn’t see the need to
this is exactly why you should pick a player with a higher ceiling than a player who would be a good "fit". warriors should have selected lamelo, at least he would have been an asset even if he doesn't fit.
I wouldn't go that far, low blow =P At least, Wiseman could make it to the end of his rookie contract? Did Russell? maybe he did, who knows. But, no doubt, some similarities.
The weird part is i never felt he is very athletic. He missed tons of ally hoops that most nba big would hammer. He looks like he is more a skilled big than a young mcgee that the warriors needs
I don’t understand why the warriors gave up on wiseman. They should’ve spent more time with him and turned him into the player they really need right now
his biggest problem is he can't exicute and offense or a defense. all the physical tools in the world, and he's a liability on both sides of the court.
He's at least starting to look more like a legitimate role player since the all star game. He still has most of the flaws he's always had, but at least he's more aware that he's playing a team game and he's developing the ability to play when somebody is guarding him.
I get why he left, but he should’ve stayed in college. He missed all that time and then next thing you know is in the NBA, where he misses more time. Seems like everyone else just lapped him.
Should never have gone to college at all. He would benefit much more from going to Europe and learning how to fit in a team while making much more than 11K. Still not a bad move to cash in on the hype. Even if he's out of the NBA that #2 pick contract will leave him with somewhere around 40 million at 23. Not bad at all
@@johnreesekl6249 exactly. Nobody knows if an extra year in college would have killed his draft stock. When you get an opportunity like that you better grab it. If any of us had to choose between what's essentially an unpaid internship and a multi-million dollar Job i don't think anyone would think twice before making the same choice as Wiseman
This guy showed flashes as a rookie. Like one time when he ripped and ran and finished with a flush, I was getting Giannis vibes. Missing a season and a half didn’t help though. As well as the Warriors basically trying to make him a taller version of Kevon Looney. I love Loon, but Wiseman is taller, more athletic and skilled. Instead of just making him a screen setter they should’ve at least run plays for him every once in a while. Or told him to just rim run and reward him with easy dunk opportunities. Kerr’s mismanaged these youngsters. I’m still rooting for Wiseman to make it, but at this point he’s probably headed overseas.
@@88GURP they were going for the win which put pressure on wiseman, it wrecked his confidence because they made him feel like he doesn't belong. One error is exaggerated for them, but come on, Poole made a lot of bonehead plays how come he stayed? His potential is that of a David Robinson and he fit so well with GSW with that Demarcus Cousins role. He needs a team that can appreciate him and help him gain confidence.
The sad thing is Wiseman got drafted to GSW, the team that revitalized JaVail McGee. The narative surrounding him is if a team that saved McGee's career can not play him, what team can he play for.
Not true, they’ve developed Kevon Looney and Jordan Poole well, two players picked at the end of the 1st round. What is true is that under Steve Kerr, the Warriors have hardly ever had the chance draft a high pick and when they do they don’t seem to select or develop them well. Wiseman is a bust, Moses Moody has moments but idk, and Kuminga might develop better in another system
@@ryansproviero 2 quality role players drafted at the end of the first round that helped them win games during a championship season. Poole failed afterwards, but he was still important in some playoff games the year they won it all. Again, I’m not capping for the warriors, they’ve got their own share of whiffs. But it’s more nuanced
@@MorphedWombathe only got shine after CP3 went down. If CP3 doesn't go down, BP is rotting on the bench. There's TJD (center), he is good. I think with enough touches he can be more impactful than Looney. Looney has missed a ton of layups because he's lost his bounce. TJD can fill that. But Kerr keeps him on the bench. Can't even count how many DNPs he has due to coach decision. But whenever he plays, it's rave reviews. What gives?
