You can tell when someone plagiarizes and understands the material, which leads you to the conclusion that they were rushed or sloppy and made a mistake overlooking the citation. But when someone plagiarizes the way a 5th-grader does, just changing a couple words or expanding an initialization and showing otherwise no understanding of the material, that's cause for major concern.

When I was an undergrad, it was made VERY clear that plagiarism was a VERY serious thing, and would be met with severe punishment. When I was in Grad School, Plagiarism was grounds for being expelled. She should be completely expunged from academia, shunned and ostracized by all academic institutions, and never allowed to work in education for the rest of her life--as either an instructor or an administrator. Being a PhD, AND the top administrator of Harvard, she should be held to at least the same standards that the students of her university are held to. The fact that she still has a job at Harvard that doesn't involve a mop bucket is a travesty, and a slap in the face of ANY Harvard student who has ever written a paper. What most people don't seem to realize is that to someone like Claudine Gay--a self-identified Marxist--is that what she did--in her mind-wasn't "plagiarism". As a Marxist, she doesn't believe in Intellectual Property, so stealing someone else's ideas is just the Academic version of "Seizing the Means of Production" in her twisted logic. And THAT is the REAL issue here--not that she is dishonest, or a plagiarist, or a liar--but that she is a Marxist who believes she has the right to other peoples property without recompense or attribution.....

When I was writing my thesis and dissertation in theoretical chemistry and chemical physics, my major professors even stated that if I use an equation, from a paper, not only do you cite the paper you better change the fonts on mathematical expressions. Copying one single sentence was not only an impossibility but a straight path to getting kicked out. I just don't understand why in the hell didn't she put citations in her work. Even in the sciences now, we've become infected with this woke nonsense that you can not question the protected class. In one instance, in the theoretical science at the ACS, I questioned the work of a climate scientist on the validity of their stochastic partial differential equations in its analysis. These equations are inherently chaotic because they contain far too many variables and do not have well understood boundary conditions (the initial state of a system). I was just told the questioning of the science may actually hurt in promoting these ideals. I was told I wasn't a climate scientist. However, upon further questioning, the authors, themselves, didn't understand the mathematics to a large degree. So when did science stop not attempting to understand the governing laws of nature? However, what's most insidious, the entire committee on the dissertation board needs to be fired or needs to step down. Harvard itself is responsible for allowing and advocating this behavior.

Agreed. I can’t help but think it’s convenient to keep the focus on her role as president because it distracts from the question of why she was able to become a professor in the first place. She shouldn’t have been a professor at 2nd or 3rd tier schools let alone Stanford and Harvard. (No disrespect to academics in 2nd and 3rd tier institutions, as I know there are some outstanding professors/researchers in them.) I also wonder if keeping the focus just on how she became president helps downplay the way this has been going on for years. I’m glad that some are now looking for other instances of plagiarism amongst faculty and administrators. I hope some people also look into the wild disparities in publications amongst professors and in different departments/majors, with some having meager numbers of sub-par publications. But I can anticipate the case being made that people with few and mediocre publications were great “teachers” and inspirations.

From the Harvard Guide to Using Sources: " When you fail to cite your sources, or when you cite them inadequately, you are plagiarizing, which is taken extremely seriously at Harvard. Plagiarism is defined as the act of either intentionally OR unintentionally submitting work that was written by someone else. If you turn in a paper that was written by someone else, or if you turn in a paper in which you have included material from any source without citing that source, you have plagiarized" end of quote. Plagiarism is the act of presenting the words, ideas, or images of another as your own; it denies authors or creators of content the credit they are due. Whether deliberate or unintentional, plagiarism violates ethical standards in scholarship. Writers who plagiarize disrespect the efforts of original authors by failing to acknowledge their contributions, stifle further research by preventing readers from tracing ideas back to their original sources, and unfairly disregard those who exerted the effort to complete their own work. Quotations must always be identified as such by the use of either quotation marks or indentation, and with full referencing of the sources cited. It must always be apparent to the reader which parts are your own independent work and where you have drawn on ideas and language from another source. Paraphrasing the work of others by altering a few words and changing their order, or by closely following the structure of their argument, is plagiarism if you do not give due acknowledgement to the author whose work you are using.A passing reference to the original author in your own text may not be enough; you must ensure that you do not create the misleading impression that the paraphrased wording or the sequence of ideas are entirely your own.

Or when we write we may throw together hundreds of pages of text and it's all on 1 word document, and intend to put in our own voice for forget or even think one did.... Cover up implies they are dishonest about punishing certain groups, this reflects badly on the upper management vs just on 1 scholar who copied.... As a veteran college educator whose courses focus heavily on graduate-level composition with pointed emphasis on academic integrity, I do not follow Sibarium’s excessively cautious and circuitous treatment of Gay’s plagiarism: She baldly copied from multiple outside sources without attribution-it’s comical to mention “bibliography” in the context of citation, since Gay’s readers would literally have no inkling as to which work listed at the end of her document had been drawn from in which sentence/section of her paper, let alone from which page/portion of that source work, or even in what capacity (e.g. legitimately paraphrased vs. directly quoted material). I have assigned failing grades to dozens of students in my classes over the past 15+ years for violations far less egregious than those in Gay’s publications. Close paraphrases have no business appearing in (secondary) research at all; Gay breaks this absolute rule repeatedly, including lengthy stretches of rawly plagiarized text. Hers is the most cut-and-dried case of naked academic dishonesty I’ve ever come across at the level of top university administration. Even allowing for a “continuum” of offenses against scholarly integrity, Gay deserves a ‘death penalty’ equivalent here.

When you permit people into positions or places that their individual merit would not allow, but instead look to other factors like gender, race, or *insert superficial characteristic here*, this is what you get: people who don't have the merit, don't think they should need to demonstrate the merit cause they're "socially special," and opportunist race hustlers who exploit certain sympathies to advance their personal goals.

I actually wrote a dissertation and don't need to quote Harvard so I speak from experience. It can happen that you write a dissertation and make a mistake or mistakes and that is why there is editing. I edited my own dissertation and made sure every thought that was not mine was attributed to the proper party. What I'm saying here is that a President of a premier research university like Harvard should have a flawless dissertation that has proper citations. The President of Harvard is going to have their dissertation throughly reviewed and it has to be properly cited. From my reading of the various stories about this matter I would say it appears to have been a case of less than optimal citations and one can expect criticism as a result.

Some of my professors stated in their syllabi that one instance of failure to cite would result in a letter-grade reduction; more than one instance would be considered plagiarism and would be reported to the Student Honor Committee.

This is what Harvard calls, “inadequate citation” or whatever term they used? So shameful. Now ever student at Harvard can breath a sigh of relief because they no longer have to worry about plagiarizing someone else’s work. How can they discipline or expel a student after having a professor on staff who themselves is a plagiarist? That student would be perfectly justified in suing the university.

In the world of academia original research is the holy grail of their world. It is the primary reason for their existence and it is taken very, very seriously. Based on the revelations that have surfaced regarding Dr. Gay, it is clear that she is a primary lightweight in her field and doesn’t measure-up to the standards we would expect from a school such as Harvard, let alone a regional university. However, if Dr. Gay is in fact representative of the research standards that Harvard is proud of, then Harvard has sunk to a level of mediocrity that is not commensurate with their reputation. But, does anybody really think social science research is real research anyway. Perhaps Dr. Gay is representative of the whole field. But, what do presidents of universities do anyway? They raise money, they go to meetings, they keep alumni happy. They are PR-frontmen/women, so Dr. Gay is probably qualified for that job and she doesn’t have to pretend that she is a serious academic.
