But the industry is changing - and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty isn’t the only brand laying the foundation for a more inclusive beauty industry.

Rihanna’s new makeup line Fenty Beauty has been an instant success - and it’s not only popular because Rihanna’s name is attached to it. Fenty Beauty carries a wide range of foundations - 40 to be exact - which has the beauty industry shook. Cosmetics and the beauty industry as a whole, has a long history of creating products that did not match deeper-toned people of color. There are a number of factors that have lead many mainstream beauty companies to having a narrow selection for people of color - and not all of those reasons are rooted in product development. With Fenty Beauty, Rihanna is showing the industry that it’s worth investing money and time into creating nuanced products beyond the ranges of ivory, beige, and tan.

that's cool that Fenty does that. But if you are a small business owner in rural Ohio, should you really be expected to stock and restock every single skin tone equally when you know as a small business owner that the darkest make up skin tones only account for 1% of the total make up you sell? Why should that small business owner stock thousands of dollars of make up every year that she knows for a fact will never be purchased? Whenever a new line of make up is released, should that small business owner be obliged to purchase every skin tone available in equal portions, regardless of the fact that certain skin tones sell 5, 10, 20 times more than other skin tones?

To be honest, a year or so ago I wasn't near a open minded as I am now, I'm not proud of it, mostly because my family always lived in such a white place and so never bothered to learn about other races. Of course, my family has always been against segregation and racism, but I don't think they ever really thought about how they would react to POC coming to their country properly before the refugee crisis. Now our minds have changed and it's all through education teaching people what the world looks like from different perspectives. That's why videos like these are so important.

Doesnt take 9 minutes to explain this. It's because fair = beautiful. We've all been brainwashed into thinking that being fair is the gold standard and that darker skin tones mean you're not pretty. Darker skin tones have been neglected and ignored, and now Rihanna broke the mould and made it compulsory to offer more shades for darker skin tones.When other brands saw her profit from it, they all decided to follow the "trend" and offer more shades because it was now "cool" to be dark. The world is still a VERY racist place.
@graphiquejack
@graphiquejack 5 лет назад
That was the case in the 1800s, but not now. Fair skin used to mean you were rich, didn't need to work on the fields outdoors, so your skin was lighter.... and the wealthy were dumb enough to put lead paint on their skin in some cultures and time periods to look even more pale. But consider how many white people tan their skin to darken it. Now, 'tan' is beautiful and pale is ghostly and unhealthy. Is there racism in our culture? Absofuckinglutely, however, I would say with darker skinned people lightening their skin, and lighter skinned people tanning their skin, a mid-light-brown colour is probably deemed the most beautiful now.

in the far East Asia, it is still known that being pale is beautiful and being tan or dark means you are ugly because in their history, slaves worked in the sun which tanned their skin a lot and this trend doesn't end for them. As a deeply coloured Chinese girl, I think this is not a good trend to keep following because it is now known that no body is a slave anymore and this trend is not looking to stop anytime soon. I have actually been bullied severely because of it. I have an African mum and I carried most of my genes from her so I came out to be dark. I was born in China and this beauty trend went as far as not allowing me to school because I looked like “dirt”. being there for 7 years and not allowed to school just because of that. I had to move from my home and go back to Africa which was also a bad thing for me because I couldn't speak English or French fluently at that time and I could only speak Chinese so I was classified as “stupid” in school. This whole disaster in my life has been caused only by that one idiotic trend. Beauty shouldn't be on someone's skin colour it should be on their personal features and that is why some people believe that everyone is beautiful in their own way

I'm sorry, is that the way you react, when you see other people's struggle? That you feel glad it's not you? Cos I'm pretty sure that wasn't Alex's reaction. White women don't experience these things. If you do not experience somethings firsthand there's a degree of separation from the problem. Even if you have a friend who opens your eyes to it, you can listen, you can attempt to empathize, but you will never know their struggle fully because you haven't lived it. However, just because that degree of separation remains, that does not mean your takeaway will be "Aren't I glad that I'm not experiencing this first-hand", most likely it's "I see your struggle and though will never comprehend it fully because I am not the one living it please let me know how I can be of use to your cause". Peace.

Why do people in this comment section think that black people don't have money? Having products for minority groups in a predominantly white market isn't a loss. Markets catering towards the upkeep of black hair literally makes billions every year, meaning people are willing and have the means to pay for it. And if makeup for darker skin tones get sold out, then think about what kind of money you could make from expanding the business.

Because according to median adjusted income, black household income is lower than white household income by about 30k. Though I don't know why people will infer that as black people having no money. The keyword is "lower" and "median." Lower doesn't necessary mean you are dirt poor, you just have less than what somebody else has. Median means there are people above that median.

I thought it was because blacks (minorities) are a minority of the population so companies don't market to minorities as much as majorities. A more interesting video would be something you touched upon. "Why do black women spend so much on beauty products compared to whites?"
@ollynolly4592
@ollynolly4592 6 лет назад
Kinickylj nobody said anyone has to. It's their choice to do so but companies have to cater to a certain group of people. It's not like food. Everybody eats food but clothes, make up and hair care is different for all groups of people. It would be smart to cater towards the majority but since there are already so many doing that your company might not make it. It might be a disadvantage to cater towards a minority group but that is only if you don't know what they want, they they are looking for in products and what they ultimately need. If you got all that you're good

maybe because it's not about race but about companies making products for most popular skin tones. I'm white af and can't find matching foundation anywhere. I gave up at this point, I don't need another bottle of orange death to spent my money on. As some comments said - buy from black brands, support your people and stop spending your money at sephora etc. they will feel the difference. there's so much WOC, you can make a difference. Me, with my pale skin- I have no power and no options. the only powder I found that matches my skin is white. and I mean white.

I prefer not to wear makeup from companies that don’t cater to my complexion. Fenty Beauty is amazing, though I haven’t purchase it yet; but I currently wear MAC & Makeup Forever b/c I found my undertones & overtones in the same bottle. This video was very informative, but naturally, ppl get defensive when women of color, especially Black American women ask to be represented. I am only a second generation regular makeup wearer, which speaks to the lack of options in the past. Rather than get triggered, people should educate themselves before hitting “dislike”. I NEVER look for powder, liquid/cream foundation, contour, or blush in the drugstores anymore. I don’t even try. Yes I spend more, but the quality is much better. I’ve seen this issue for really fair skin as well, so clearly makeup Brands need to consider more options & LISTEN.

I live in India where most women are of brown skin with some fair skin tones too,however all the ads and stores sell lighter tone products,we are made to believe looking dark is dirty and you desperately need make up or face creams which will lighten your skin tone to make you look more attractive.Yes,there is economics involved in this,but anyone who is denying that this is a race issue also is simply unaware.This was a colonial racial mindset that you have to look fair to be attractive,the numerous racists ads running in my country is proof.This is a worldwide issue,so simply saying if you want dark toned makeup go to a non white country is again,ignorant.

Can someone actually explain what is so upsetting for so many people in this video? It's just a historical account of makeup for women of colour and it has somehow garnered such ardent hate for it minutes after being uploaded. All the negative comments appear to be from white males who view this as an attack against whiteness; a lot of them being posted before anyone could even finish the video on 2x speed. I for one have little to no interest in makeup but decided to watch through the video to see why it almost instantly gained so much hate and I'm failing to see why other than a bunch of white men who hate blacks and women... I mean if you have any genuine reasons for disliking the video, I'd be glad to hear and discuss them but it's pretty obvious that there are a lot of racists (ironic or not) in this comment section.

Vox has become a target for many on the right. And in fairness it has put out some horribly biased content in the past. So now they're on a mission to bury any content that they disagree with. I don't think there was much wrong with this video. Except it did rather jump to the conclusion that the lack of products was driven by racism, when there might be a more innocent explanation that the products just weren't economically viable. Though also, it wouldn't surprise me if racism was a factor, or simply ignorance. Because the fashion industry can be notoriously shallow.
@8linck8
@8linck8 6 лет назад
It pins it all to racism when in reality it's just basic economics. Companies aren't going to have the same amount of dark shades of make up as light shades when only 6% of the population is going to be interested in the dark shades vs. 36% being interested in the lighter shades. If you release a new dark shade some dark skinned women are going to gravitate towards it because it might fit their skin better than the alternative. The same thing happens when you release a light shade though, and even more people will flock towards it because there's more light skinned people than dark skinned ones. That basically means that the vast majority of the time it is better to just release yet another light tone than a dark tone. There's no point in competing with other companies over a tiny amount of market share.

What many fail to realize is that dark skin isn't just limited to white people. There are Indians, Southeast Asians, and various other ethnicities that can be darker than me, and I'm black. The reason why Fenty is successful is because there is clearly an open market for these people who haven't been successful to match their foundation due to limited shades. And the reason that is, as much as people want to deny it, is because of darker skin not being seen as a beauty investment. Sometimes there just IS a racial component. You can't deny the impact the past has had on the present and tell people that they are the ones making it an issue. This has never been an issue for white men so I don't know why they are so concerned when this video really isn't for them. (I'm directly talking about the people who have a weird problem with it-not the cool curious white dudes)
@JammieJohnny1

@someonedifferent7071
@someonedifferent7071 6 лет назад
People honestly make it into a racial thing but I can kinda understand why. It's because beauty brands comes up with shades for "fairer" skin than darker skin tones. They would normally make a darker foundation but only 1 or 2 darker shades, not thinking of the variation of darker skin. And people are pissed about it because it's not hard to make darker foundation for people who are darker skinned. That's why you're seeing the brand Fenty so much because it's a successful brand that fulfilled the needs of people of all skin colours, black to white.

I have a makeup technology idea What if makeup foundation was clear but it blends with your skin, it adjust to your skin color and covers imperfections and corrections, that would be very smart considering that you wouldn’t need a certain shade because the makeup could blend in with you skin, naturally, like water on skin but instead it erases imperfections without being a color. It wouldn’t be hard to allow dark skinned people to find a color, or pale people to find a color or in between colored person to find a product, a clear foundation would allow for all to have their color as it adjust and dries on your face. Now wouldn’t that be smart?

something similar to this already exists but the problem is that it is not incredibly accurate and most of the products completely ignore undertones so even though the color might match it won't match your undertone which is just as bad as not matching your skin tone.

I don't see why so many people are disliking this video. It's factual, it's not someone spouting off about how angry they are at the beauty industry. Though I don't have dark skin, I notice how limited makeup shades are for darker skinned women. And this video explains why. People are getting so butthurt about "but what's a person of color?" That's not the point of this video.
@XingAoShen
@XingAoShen 6 лет назад
Double D you clearly didn't watch the video because they did point that out and showed there is in fact as much demand. and the us is not the only country in the world that the makeup is supplied to, for your information.

same here. It's pretty obvious when I look at makeup that there are very few shades for the darker skinned tones. meanwhile, I can find my shade in any brand.
@jenniferhunter4074
@jenniferhunter4074 6 лет назад
Double D - Nope. It's about making money. And I will sell foundation for women of color if it makes me money. Fenty showed that women of color aren't afraid to drop mega bucks to buy foundation. It's a case of "if you build it, they will come". (Smart people always look at capturing more market share and gaining brand loyalty. If I were in any industry in the US, I would be looking at the spending potential of non-white markets and doing my damnedest to make sure they buy my products. that's just common business sense. You don't follow the trend in business. You make the trend. People of color have money and their money is the same shade of green that white people money is.)
@keel7898
@keel7898 6 лет назад
Double D You used inferior wrong you mean superior? How could you take darker skinned women struggling to look for their foundation shades with them being superior to us? And the 12% population is meaningless. From the Fenty Beauty release, the darker colors were sold out within a few days. Darker skinned women buy foundation. Just because there are more light skinned women in the U.S. doesn't mean "oh well let's make these shades for these specific women." Brands would make so much more money if the expanded their shade range.
@violetevans4742
@violetevans4742 6 лет назад
I feel like this piece misses a few large points and that is why it was so heavily downvoted. There is a lack of discussion surrounding the way shade ranges are introduced, a lack of economic reasoning, and brushes over the previous failed attempts at darker shade ranges. While inequality may be where the beauty industry initially went wrong, I think a misguided approach to introduce darker shades is where things go wrong today. The few shades of dark skin tones that have been sold don't encompass many people, so they haven't ever sold well and proved "market viable." Previously and currently companies literally "test run" the darker colors, and if they don't sell well the shade ranges are never expanded. As it logically makes sense that with a smaller target audience would buy less of a product, this poor selling ability was never questioned. Now, Fenty had bridged it so everyone can find their color, so now it shows market viability that largely wasn't seen before. Pushing all of the issues off as social inequality, like this video by Vox did, only further polarizes audiences which is personally why I downvoted the video. My downvote of this video had nothing to do with my skin color and I am an advocate for increasing shade ranges. I watch just as much Jackie Aina and Nyma Tang as I do Jeffree Star and Tati. I have like dozens of videos by Vox in the past that deal with social issues by coming at the issue with facts as a basis for the argument. This video didn't interview a makeup company about shade ranges. It focused on a professor that had no history in the industry, she made no economic points and there was no "expert" economic opinion. This piece missed the mark.

I say makeup should be done like wall paint. Every color/product has a RGB, RGBA, CMYK, CIE, CIELUV, or HSL and HSV Color Number. You go to a store and they mix up whatever color/shade you want. This would also be nice because you could use a device like this: sensing.konicaminolta.asia/products/cr-10-plus-color-reader/ to know your exact skin tone too. No more random shades.

I don't know about mixing it at the store, but it would be nice if makeup companies used some kinda consistent system. However this wouldn't be good for the company because it discourages brand loyalty. If you know EXACTLY what shade you are in a product that may be better/cheaper, what's stopping you from switching products? If they keep you in the mindset of "I don't want to change brands because it'll be the wrong shade" they make more money.

I have no real clue about this subject, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the story seems somewhat flawed. She went to a bunch of stores, she couldn't find the product she was looking for and then she blames the manufacturer of the product. That is not a problem caused by the manufacturer of a product. That problem is caused by the store, who decided not to buy (put in stock) the product she was looking for. For example, she complains there aren't enough makeup options for non-white women in the stores she visited, but if I go to a bunch of online stores in my own country, then I find about the same number of makeup options for both white and non-white people. So, instead of blaming the manufacturer, shouldn't the video be about why the stores in the US don't give her more options?

I'd say the biggest issue is how Vox is framing this. What really bothered me about this video is how they brought up that only ~16% of black women worked in a certain beauty company, which is really close to America's black population. We shouldn't expect people of color to be overrepresented in an industry that isn't marketed towards people of color exclusively. This also explains why there typically aren't as many darker shades of makeup. If less than 20% of your consumer base buy darker shades, realistically you're not going to be able to sell a wide variety of darker makeup since the extra cost to produce more shades won't be made up by their relatively low sales. To be fair, the video did a good job on highlighting how smaller, independent companies can fill this share of the market. It's just that the video implied that women of color had fewer mainstream options because of racism rather than supply and demand.

Plus, the "best excuse" I ever heard was that black skin doesn't need it :/ Also, obviously it's worse for those with darker complexions, but I've also struggled finding colours for how pale I am :( And even if you find the right shade, because so few lines have a proper range, you might hate the formula and how it works with your skin type. I hope the Fenty Beauty sets the new standard for a foundation launch for all beauty brands.

Nellie Rutten Did you actually watch it, it mentioned all that. Colorism is a thing yes, and it sucks, yes, and it even spawned the black is beautiful movement, but first of all the video actually said that dark skinned people DID try making their own products (apparently they never got popular or something, maybe the stores didn't buy it) and while it's true that they can make their own products and companies (which has happened) the mainstream brands foolishly ignored the demand, at best because they ignorantly ignored the market research proving it's profitable and at best because they feared their reputation would be threatened because other people would dislike them for it.

yall say this is a misunderstanding of demand and supply, but i feel like the demand has been always been there but never vocalized to these companies until fenty came out and swept the competition. you dont just tell women of color to go to companies that already cater to their skintypes because why should they be limited to what they have? why should they be complacent with the companies that already do? they have the voice as consumers to be able to also try to add more inclusivity. “supply and demand balances it out” yeah but it’s not balanced right now.

People with very pale or very dark skin can never find anything for them. Sometimes I mix my foundation with white base and blue powder and my friend with some black mineral powder. 1.) for people saying its simple economics to not sell darkers shades. Or if you complain so much why not make your own brands. We do and the thing is they are in beauty stores and drugstores all around the nation and they are doing very well because there is a need for darker colors. So clearly the market is there for darker shades financially so why not have big brands just make more darker shades when it would benefit them financially. and on top of that its not just about dark shades not being in rural small town walmarts because of lack of supply in demand(even tho there is still darker skin friendly companies like milani and black radiance selling their stuff in those very same walmart and drugstores there) but because the company could sell the darker colors online if they didn't put the colors in areas where there is lack of poc their market is worldwide but still there is barely any darker shades. 2.) I know this seems like such a small issue but I'm a "lightskin" black female and i use the darkest shade in several popular brands or they don't even have a shade dark enough at all and my skin own is the same as a lot of darker asains, middle easterns, indian/desi, native American, Hispanic, and Polynesian/pacific islanders. That's a huge chunk of diverse people in the USA that lack of dark skinned colors effect this isn't just a black issue or a supply and demand issue when poc make up so much of our country. And this isn't even talking about the darker colored people i cant even imagine dark skin girls tryin to find shades with no luck.

The problem could possibly be with the supply, when there is ls limited shelf space in stores, they try to market to the broadest consumer market, which is why a lot of the makeup found in stores, is marketed to different shades of white, despite there being just as many different shades with people of colour. The possible reason as to why Rihanna's Fenty beauty was so popular, was not necessarily because it targeted a new market but because it was sold online more as compared to the makeup found in stores. When you track down the product, instead of the product being available near you, there is a higher degree of specification. It's the same reason why if you want a specific coffee bean for your coffee, you have better chances of finding it online than in a random grocery store. This is just a point that could be made, it's not to say that there isn't any truth to the arguments they make in the video, just there still are a lot of different points they haven't explored.

If I had the money I'd release a line with 105 shades, Five sections with 21 in each section, 7 for each undertone. Fair, Medium Fair, Medium, Medium Dark, and Dark. Then the undertones would be cool, neutral, and warm. I'd make sure to not just focus on foundation, but also lipsticks and blush, which do need more pigment.

I feel like companies just ignore the women of color and the women of no color. I'm super pale, as in lightest shape of foundations and concealer but not WHITE in color. I can hardly find stuff for my color because companies don't care for people with pigment or no pigment. I always see the beige color for "tan" or sun-kissed girls, and I can't wear any of products because they are just too dark or orange for me. I'm glad to see companies finally getting it in their brain that not everyone is the same damn shades of beige or tan.

MusicMysteryLover yeah I’m super pale and absolutely do not ever want to tan because I think everyone should be able to have their own skintone and not have to change it just to look pretty for someone else. I never wear makeup because none of the available shades match me as my natural self I just wish they could makes shades for every tone.

I have yet to find a shade that matched my skin. It's either too tan, too pink, too yellow, or a mix of yellow-tan. In high school, I actually bought a pure white powder from Hot Topic to tone down my foundation because it was too dark (and I'm talking the lightest shade possible) I am extremely fair and I'm still waiting for a foundation (one that is cruelty free, sulfate and silicone free) that matches me.

Then brands like Fenty became popular and suddenly so many beauty brands had a lot more colors in their palette. Guess they finally realized that money is still green, no matter the shade of the hand giving it.
