ABUS sells Bordo folding locks with several different security levels, just as they sell chains and U-locks of different security levels. The weakest ABUS Bordo folding lock weighs 0.7kg, has unhardened steel bars/links and rated by ABUS as security level 7. The strongest Bordo XPlus 6500K weighs 1.7kg and has hardened steel bars/links and an ABUS security level of 15. You tested a lighter duty Abus model with a grinder but then trashed all ABUS folding locks. Please test the Bordo XPlus 6500K and compare it to the low end ABUS folding lock you already tested.

What you're waving around is an "angle grinder", not a circular saw! Just the tool, without the battery, is called a "skin" (in Australia). Isn't a "handset" part of a telephone or communication device?
@e79905
@e79905 Год назад
Thanks for the video. I installed the frame lock and enjoy the speed of locking and unlocking. The only problem with it is that you'd need a separate chain that slots into it, and that's around 1.5kg in total.
@TheCheapBikeChannel
@TheCheapBikeChannel Год назад
Hello - the frame lock doesn't always have the slot for that chain, it's optional, to then attach around an immovable object. Indeed I'm not that keen on the chain, as it has to be wrapped around the seat post, which can then make a rattling noise, or scratch the paintwork.

1:25 I mean, if you're going to go to that much effort begging the Government for permission to unlock your own bike destructively, why not just have them come out and do it for you? They have breaching tools that are more than up to the task, and they'd probably love the practice. Down side is you may be more gentle than they would be. Also, saves you all of the expense of purchasing cheap knock-offs of the equipment cops have bought with the taxes extorted from you. 🤷‍♂

Nice video! I had that stereotype that a ring-shape frame lock is one of the easiest to break, still feel suspicious about that thin metal bar though. You mentioned a thief would need to use an angle grinder and cut it twice so close to the frame. But I wonder could they use a bolt cutter instead? Then the cutting would be much faster and less likely to damage the frame. Thanks again for the informative video!
@TheCheapBikeChannel
@TheCheapBikeChannel 2 года назад
Hello - I found that the bolt cutters just slip off when trying to cut a cylindrical bolt, even if it's hollow. Also it would be difficult to get the blades of the bolt cutters far enough around bolt. And lastly, after using the bolt cutters a few times to do this, the blades become damaged and no longer as sharp.
@andreashansen7892
@andreashansen7892 Год назад
Those looks are very normal in Denmark and you see them on all bikes. The lock can’t be cut with regular bolt cutters since they slip off. Maby if you have some industrial ones if would work. If you cut the lock in the left side first you will not need to cut it twice since the metal bar is only attached at one side.

3:06 - only muppets buy a bike worth thousands of euros and then lock it up in public places for people to steal, no debate, end of story. They deserve what they get. 3:14 if you actually train yourself to be minimally strong with a paltry few gym sessions you can carry a 4kg chain and padlock around your shoulders or waist with little inconvenience. So the moral of the video is: don't be an overprivileged consumer of unnecessarily expensive luxury bikes, and secondly dont be a weedy weakling and carry a decent chain on your person.

I lost a key for my bike and thinking would a (manual) saw for metal do the job, not on the run hah, so ya ? I have one before last one.. with the ring and all.. Thanks for the video..
@TheCheapBikeChannel
@TheCheapBikeChannel 2 года назад
Hi - yes it could work if the blade is new-ish - but you may struggle to get a good angle to saw, without damaging the wheel or frame. Remember you can usually unscrew the whole ring from the frame, to move it into a better position to saw through.

Bike theives look for easy targets.
@aegisgfx
@aegisgfx 4 месяца назад
And this is why it's a myth and a RU-vid lie that bike thieves carry around industrial mining equipment in their backpacks and are willing to create massive amount of noise and Sparks in order to steal people's bikes. It's just not happening, they are looking for the easiest Target. Bike thieves are cowards, they do not want to make a lot of noise and draw attention to themselves, the only people doing that are the ones making fake RU-vid videos. Bottom line is that it's far easier to just provide the statistics of how many bikes are stolen with angle grinders then it is to make a video of yourself cutting every known lock on Earth with an angle grinder to terrorize people into buying more bike expensive locks. Now I don't have the statistics in front of me and I haven't looked them up but it'd be really easy to do so, and I would suspect that it's a very very low percentage of bikes that are stolen by someone who used an angle grinder.

@megamaximpie

Eventually every lock can be cut or picked. Its all about how much effort/ noise you have to make. Like you said if they try to cut your lock with an angle grinder in a crouded location then people will most likely call the police. So imo a good quality folding lock is sufficient for the job. Just make sure to park your bike in sight. You could lock your bike with a thick hardened steel chain at home if you keep your bike there for a longer period of time.
@DM-sc4zy

people will most likely call the police - depending on where you are. it might be highly unlikely or not likely.
@AstralS7orm
@AstralS7orm Год назад
@@DM-sc4zy Police will arrive, on a good day, in 10 minutes. By that time your bike is long gone. Even the Abus Granite ulock plus a frame lock or a disc brake lock will get defeated in that time. That if anyone even bothers. The best attempt would be to have a lock from an alloy that would blunt the cutting discs into unusability. Thief might not have another one on them.

I really think you might be underrating the chains. Even with portable circular saws or angle grinders out there, those links are not going to want to stay in one place when being attacked by cutting; They would bob all over the place. Those at 10mm or 39/100ths" or 3/8ths" are often squared off and have better steel. And they're going to also have to be cut twice to open the link. If they did happen to shatter, which would not be that common, then that might be right in the prick's face!

A lock that doesn't attach bike to anything might not work - oftentimes bike thieves steal many bikes in a short span of time, just throwing them into the back of a van or smth. (locked or not) If there is only a lock preventing the wheel from moving they can just pick it up and take off :P Different story: once i had a very good lock with multiple layers made of different materials (60 euro lock for a 30 euro bike) attached to a street sign. It took them 2 nights.. :P The first night they got through the outer layers (rubber + metal? shell) but couldn't cut the steel wire inside. I left the bike there again thinking that the lock did its job but the morning after i only found the lock cut through :(

@TheCheapBikeChannel
@TheCheapBikeChannel 2 года назад
Hi - the lock over the back wheel? A bolt cutter could do it, but there might not be enough space to fit the blades over the lock. If you want to try, get one with as long arms as possible, and put one on the ground, and push down on the other with both hands. I used a handheld grinder to do it... Took around 5 mins
@derekjolly3680
@derekjolly3680 Год назад
That stuff about the cops, I'd think calling in and identifying by name and driver's license number with stating intentions at the place would be enough for them. But assuming the cops don't care I'd say that informing the store where you're locked up by way of the manager (or manageress) with name and ID number just the same would be the smart move along with perhaps having him come out with you so that a Charles Bronson type knows that it's on the up and up and won't kick you in the head when you're chain cutting! Not that having grown guys physically involving themselves against a low down thief is a bad thing at all.

That is a good question, I have had many bikes and have ebike now, no receipts anywhere, or maybe I do have somewhere in the piles of other receipts we get day in and out in our lives, thankfully down under we do not have this epidemic of thieves. The other day I was visiting a dodgy suburb by aus standards, and at the front of the train station entrance was an unlocked ebike that was new looking, I would not recommend that, but it shows a difference in people and countries. Perhaps the EU may have had an influx of undesirables ?
