Brilliant. Putting people in situations specifically to increase their anxiety levels is superb. Not everyone is gonna like it but it's the ONLY way to train yourself for pressure situations. You need to learn how to control yourself and your emotions before you can control someone else confidently. In answer to the takedown question if I may... I'm a police officer and it amazes me how easy it is to safely take someone to the ground using the most basic technique like a sasae tsurikomi ashi or osoto gari. 1 month of Judo and you're well prepared for 80%+ of people. If you can follow this up on the ground with even really basic BJJ knowledge you are golden! Its kept me out of bother on a number of occasions when some of my untrained colleagues would have struggled or maybe ended up using spray or baton and people start getting hurt. Not good for ANYBODY! Training and perhaps more importantly training under PRESSURE, increasing anxiety, will give you confidence and that means you can think clearer and make better decisions come crunch time, even if that decision is to walk away....🤷‍♂️.

First off, thanks for your service. We love our leos here at Gracie Bradenton. Secondly, your absolutely right when you are trained and comfortable with your skill set you tend to be a lot less nervous and you can handle situations better. Witch leads to less people getting hurt. And thats a win in my book.

From one BJJ practitioner to another, BJJ is an awesome self-defense tool, but it should be your last line of self-defense, not your first. I've been training BJJ since I was 10 years old (I'm 37). I've also trained Boxing, Mauy Thai, Wrestling, and Judo and have competed in MMA. It wasn't until I encountered my first real self-defense situation 2 years ago in the Philippines that I began to understand the difference between fighting and self-defense. BJJ teaches us how to win a fight with one, un-armed person. Those other MMA skills might let us win against a few un-armed people, max. In the Philippines I was faced with 5 angry guys, probably armed at least with knives. Luckily I was walking my dog and I had a big stick. I also had the wits and humility to know that I was severely out-matched. Since then I carry a 2,000+ lumen tactical flashlight (can debuff an attacker even in the daytime), pepper spray, and a knife and I've started to train with weapons such as long and short sticks and blades which has caused me to look beyond the fighting systems I mentioned above. Self defense should focus on avoiding and disengaging from a fight. BJJ generally focuses on the opposite (i.e. engaging an opponent to win a fight). Not to say that BJJ skills couldn't be used effectively to disengage and evade - but we're only good at what we practice. That's my 2 cents. I like your other content. I will subscribe.

My opinion on this matter has evolved. Yes, I'm a BJJ black belt, but I don't leave the house with out my 9mm, so if there's more than one opponent, I'll just put holes in them. Florida is a stand your ground state. ;)

@@SonnyParlin right on brother. I'm a fan of conceal carry too, but it's not allowed for foreigners where I live in Philippines.

The anxiety and the combat jiu jitsu part was good that’s great that you implement that in your classes

Wrestling and basic BJJ goes a long way in self defense. If the latter is your main focus, skip the fancy guard passing/retention/open guard stuff, work on take downs, escapes, basic submissions and limb locks. I did that for a few years and though my guard passing/retention is very basic in the traditional arts way I am pretty confident in my ability to take down, restrain, control someone & submit someone. I also trained boxing for a few years prior and some Muay Thai so that also helps.

Could you please do a live video of your jiu jitsu with strikes class? I'm a purple belt and I teach a gi fundamentals class and I'd love to implement some striking into my class. I do boxing and Muay Thai but alot of my students don't so they have no idea how to react against a striker. Self defense is first and foremost in my opinion and I'd love some ideas on how to show that to others, especially when someone is trying to punch you in the face! Absolutely love your channel BTW because you guys get straight to the point. Thanks in advance! 🤙

That is literally like saying I’d rather have a knife in a gun fight if you were black belt in jujitsu but think something else would work better people have the dumb real bad

There are people that think Brazilian Jiujitsu doesn't work for self defense and there are bjj guys that think it's the all you need to know for self defense but neither one of those extreme answers are correct. Bjj is one martial art you need to know for self defense. regardless someone who does not train bjj is still very dangerous. Self defense situations are barely ever 1 on 1 and that guy may have buddies and knife or a gun.

But do you really wanna take someone down in the street? I do bjj more than i do muay thai because its more fun but if someone tried to attack me in public going to the ground would be my last resort
@GracieBradentonjiujitsu
@GracieBradentonjiujitsu 3 года назад
It depends on the situation, what if Mike Tyson was in front of you, you'd be a straight idiot to try and stand with him. I've been in one street fight since I started doing jiu jitsu, I was a brown belt at the time. I was fighting a taekwondo black belt and we were in parking lot with pavement, so I standing guillotined him and he gave up. So I agree and disagree with you. Sometimes going to the ground is ideal, sometimes it's not. If you do go to the ground don't forget your surroundings, you have to increase your situational awareness while on the ground to watch out for any attacks from your opponent's friends and what not. But to make a long story longer, THIS is why I carry a loaded firearm at all times and own a small arsenal. People always expect fights to be one on one, but criminals are true cowards and usually will try to attack you in numbers. Except my friends (Mr. 9mm and his 9 brothers) can run a lot faster than my opponents can. When it comes to self defense, remember one thing. This shit is chess, not checkers, if you find yourself in a fair fight, you fucked up a long time ago.
@curtroen9059
@curtroen9059 3 года назад
@@GracieBradentonjiujitsu agreed. A firearm is the best form of self defense but i live in minnesota so basically someone has to be trying to shoot you for you to use it and not go to jail. I just prefer to stay on my feet because i walk around at about 155 pounds and 6’ and ive been beat up alot and its never been by somebody smaller than me. Not saying jiu jitsu isnt a neccesity for self defense, because sometimes you end up on the ground whether you want to or not but id rather not let a huge guy get ahold of me
@wm6549
@wm6549 2 года назад
BJJ probably isn't that helpful if there are multiple attackers. If you are on the ground with one person, the other guy could kick you in the head.
@GracieBradentonjiujitsu
@GracieBradentonjiujitsu 2 года назад
It depends on the attackers, the individual being attacked and the circumstances of the attack. I box, grapple and carry a sig sauer. Good luck and God bless.
