How Broken is an 80,000 Mile BMW M6?

In this video, I go into detail about everything wrong with my 2015 BMW M6 Competition that is just about to cross 80,000 miles. In my ownership since 70,000 miles, I have performed the following services:
Transmission Pan Replacement (2X)
Oil Change (3X)
Rear Tires
Rear Rotors and Pads
Fuel Evap Sensor Replacement
In total, I have spent about $7,000 on the car not including gas, with about $4,200 in remaining issues with the clutch, headliner, roof, and speakers. From my perspective, considering the MSRP of the car was $137,000 and I was able to get it for $45,000, I still feel the M6 is a serious performance bargain even with me overpaying for my specific example. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

My 650i Gran Coupe has 111k miles on the odometer and I have zero issues with the car. The interior is immaculate and it is a joy to drive. If you buy any V8 twin turbo, I recommend never to rev the engine straight off a cold start and always allow the engine oil to get up to operating temps before you hit 3k+ rpm. Change the oil every 5k miles and the transmission fluid every 50k miles. ZF the company that made the transmission states their service intervals are 50k miles, yet BMW says "lifetime fluid". I figure they want to sell new cars rather than see their old cars on the road doing just fine. In my opinion, the 6-series in general is the best performing, best looking and best value you can get.

I’ve heard the N63 motor isn’t that reliable. The s63 seems to be a bit more robust

@nickmartinsen8549 like most engines, the n63 likes to be well maintained. Keep in mind the n63tu and newer have far fewer issues than the n63's from 2012 and before.

As someone who owns one myself it’s definitely worth the money.. but if you’re going to modify it just make sure you do it right and keep up with your maintenance… common issues Oil burning but you can check the oil after running it hard… spark plugs need to be changed more often if your running an aggressive tune.. injectors and hpfp are going to need to be replaced if you’re running an aggressive tune… you are definitely going to run through tires

Best maintenance video I've ever seen. Didn't just talk about oil, brakes and basics. Talked about personal issues he came across. Seems everything is 500-2k to fix anything. A lot of these luxury cars are going for cheap

Ive got a 14' M6 GC Competiton with 60k miles, I have since put 2,500 miles on it and I agree with everything you say just based off my current experience with mine. They're not unreliable if theyre owned by a half decently smart person. The people who don't take care of them are the ones that get mad when they aren't reliable. Youre only gonna see rod bearing issues if the car was 1. Beat on while it was cold very often 2. Would get 9000 mile oil changes. Other than that, if clutches ever start slipping you can get a bit more life out of them with a XHP Trans tune, itll increase line pressure bit the easiest fix will just be a new set of clutches so you wont have to worry for abother 50-60k very harsh miles or 80k of spirited driving on stock tune. Greta video man!!!! I hope to start creating content here soon!!!

First and foremost, you are correct that there are not a lot of videos with the Fxx M6. I have been looking for a while. Thank you for giving some love. Second, where did you get a quote for the roof refinishing? Oh and BTW, I had to do my inside headliner and it was a super easy DIY job. Especially since I had to get my windshield replaced at the same time. Thanks man.

I got a quote from a local shop near me called Ghost Customs that does “starry night” headliner conversions frequently. They told me $250 if the material didn’t need to be repaired, $350 if the material needed to be repaired

You can look into BMW value service and get the front brakes and rotors replaced for around $1400. I did that at my local dealership and they honored the value service pricing. As far as reliability goes, i'm not sure bud. You're only 10k into your ownership and you're right at the point where severe issues are appearing or going to appear, i've seen some of your forum posts and you've basically been scared sh**less about your current issues. Your engine transmission having issues can almost be lumped into regular maintenance at that mileage and is far from actual issues you're going to experience such as: rear diff axles splitting, coolant line leaks, carbon buildup, turbo replacement, etc. These are going to eat you alive and are extremely common issues to have and not some made up fantasy, especially if you're beating on the car on top of a stage 2 tune. SavageGeese does blow the S63 motor failure slightly out of proportion but many of his points and negativity about the engine are grounded in objective statements and not just saying what he wants to say, that's why people follow his channel for more factual based information on the car.

The whole point of getting this car and making videos on it was to show an actual ownership experience so that people could see how unreliable/reliable these cars really are. My inquiries in forums (which have been few and far between) are primarily to gather more information on how to take care of these cars, both for myself and for people who watch my videos. I’m not really scared about anything, I have 2 other cars that run perfectly fine if something major ever happened to the M6. Furthermore, one of my best clients is a European Car service center near me, so I have the ability to at least drastically reduce the price of any major service via work exchange. But, quite honestly, even if everything you describe goes wrong, I stand my ground that the M6 is a great value. Let’s say I blow my turbos, bend a rod, and snap an axle all at the same time. Turbos (at normal prices) are normally a $6,000 - $8,000 ordeal, ~$13,000 engine + install (can be much cheaper), and $3,000 for axles. Throw another $3,000 for a diff and that’s $26,000 of issues. I OVERPAID for my M6 because of the options and color, but factoring what I paid ($45,000) with the cost of all those failures, that puts me at $71,000. For most M6 buyers, their “all in” amount if worst case scenario occurred is in the $60,000 range, potentially even less now that the market is softening. If you decide to do the preventive maintenance instead of waiting for everything to break, you can shave another $10,000 or so off that. For a car with an MSRP of over $100,000 that cosmetically holds up very well (outside of the carbon roofs, to be fair) and is as dailyable and useable in everyday life as the M6 is, I think that’s an awesome value, genuinely. We’re in a time where so many cool cars are near their original MSRP’s even with high mileage, the M6 is one of the last hidden gems left in my opinion and these videos are my attempt to show that to the world while still being honest about what breaks. Also, let’s be real here: people don’t follow SavageGeese for accurate information. He doesn’t test the cars long enough himself to be making the claims about reliability that he does. They follow because they align with his Porsche Elitism/his affinity for extremely compromised purpose built sports cars. Nothing wrong with Porsche Elitism, at the end of the day I quite frequently make the claim that BMW is the best car manufacturer of all time. But that’s what I’ve noticed the few times I’ve watched his content and observed his audience.

F06 M6 owner with over 100k on the body, 2 s63tu engines later, Carbon Ceramic brakes still in proper order, just went through some deka stage2 clutches and the car is back in the shop now to find out why, they only had 4k miles on them. I am happy to report my 2015 Florida owned car has not unlocked the headliner achievement yet :). I do have the 9500ci radar/laser detector and curious what you are running. Check out the Project Gama clutches as they are way cheaper, that said I have not run them yet though.

Came across your video as I’m looking at a ‘14 M6 gran coupe w/ competition pkg. I freaking love these cars but I’ve never owned a German vehicle, so I’m used to getting in my cars and just driving, changing oil, brakes and tires. And honestly not having hardly any big expensive fixes. But again, I take care of my cars. You gotta pay to play, I get that. I just can’t see dropping a couple grand here and there for random fixes. I’ve just been looking for a big v8 sedan. You can find a Mustang/Camaro at every street corner but an M6…few and far between. Hell I wanted a Alfo Romeo Giulia Quadrafogilo but those seem to have a bad rep too. Hard to tell if it’s just fearmongering online or what. I just miss having a fun ride.

You can definitely mitigate a lot of problems up front by doing preventative maintenance, but realistically if the thought of a repair bill here and there being a couple thousand dollars doesn’t sit right with you, this probably isn’t the car for you. It’s not a guarantee these things will happen, but if them happening will ruin your experience I’d definitely look elsewhere. That being said though, you’re talking about paying ~$35,000 for a $120,000 car with an M6 vs. paying $35,000 - $40,000 for a ~$50,000 Mustang/Camaro. The M6 (or any M car) will tax you more than the cars you mentioned will in the service department but they give you an unbelievable driving experience to make up for it :)
