Air pollution is a well-known problem that negatively impacts human health. But did you know that it also harms our ability to make decisions? Maastricht University School of Business and Economics' (SBE) research team, led by Nico Pestel, Steffen Künn, and Juan Palacios, set up air pollution sensors at chess tournaments to study the effects of indoor air quality on players' performance. The results were clear: poor indoor air quality hinders players' decision-making. Particularly during critical moments in the game when time is running out.
But what does this mean for the labor market? Given that chess is a highly cognitive task requiring problem-solving and strategic decision-making skills, it's likely that poor air quality negatively impacts the performance of high-skill workers such as managers and technicians. As demand for these workers continues to rise, it's in our best interest to improve air quality not only for health reasons, but also for financial gain.
