The first episode in our new 'Process' series where we focus on how a bike company actually produces, engineers and tests their bikes during the manufacturing process. We stopped by Chromag to see how they go from conceptualizing a bike to putting it together ready for sale.

I’ve recently had the chance to spend the day with one of their bikes. Makes you rethink the whole gotta have full suspension motto! (At least for the riding I do)

Super cool behind-the-scenes look at what goes into a chromag bike. I, for one, typically prefer threadded BBs, but after seeing the size difference between the two, the PF makes a lot more sense in this application. Beautiful bikes.

Yeah we felt it was important for Ian to explain that actually there was a purpose for using the press fit system in this instance. It can be such a 'poking the bear' topic to bring up, but here everyone has learnt where there is a useful application.
@ryanthomaslane1

I dont understand why all new BB standards have to be PF. Why not another threaded size if the diameter needs to increase?
@zyoungson215

because imagine trying to work a huge thread lose that is siezed or jammed

I gots a rootdown which is the Taiwanese made version with same geometry. It rides soooo well I love it. It really rips downhill, so well that I have no interest in taking my dualie out anymore. And I can climb so much better on hardtail it feels like cheating.

What i dont understand about the "new" geometry trends is the short rear end. Especially on a hardtail. If you really wanna shred on a hardtail you are gonna want all the rear end stability you can get and in that case short chanistays arent of much help. I get that they want the bikes to feel more lively but shouldnt a stable rear end be what you want on a hardtail, becuase hardtails are really playful by nature?
@TheMoreWeExplore
@TheMoreWeExplore 6 лет назад
RU-vid User I'll take the shortest chainstay I can find. It turns, manuals, and jumps so well. The primary reason I bought my chameleon is because of the 415mm chainstay.
@pukki34
@pukki34 6 лет назад
I agree. Finnish Pole is making long and slack bikes with long chainstays.

@obi-wankenobi9871 6 лет назад

@NoBrakes23
@NoBrakes23 6 лет назад
A short rear end is not as stable, but it turns so much better. Some folks are going to like the straightline stability more than the ability to rotate quickly, but I prefer a shorter back end. Modern 29er hardtails have shorter backends than my old 26", and consequently lose that old wagon wheel feeling that folks used to complain about. When a hardtail has long chainstays it feels dead and cumbersome to me.

CHROMAG PLEASE REMOVE THAT FD CABLE GUIDE!!! OH MY GOD FOR ANYTHING IN THE WORLD PLEASE REMOVE IT! Who still use that difficult-to-maintenance front derailleur this day. For radical MTB brand like chromag it is just not makes any sense. And i think chromag should remove it from 2014. Buy Surly if you want to use front derailleur. I am from Indonesia. And Chromag is become a dream component here.

Some people still like to add a bashguard and that's where it mounts, also some people who run 1x still insist on having a chainguide.
