Dance to Be Free is a program helping female prisoners overcome trauma with dance. While the inmates at the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections are physically incarcerated, the freedom that comes through dance helps them open up, enjoy themselves, and regain self-confidence. Founder Lucy Wallace began teaching dance in prison in order to help inmates, who often had unaddressed PTSD from physical or emotional trauma, regain ownership over their bodies and spirits. Prison dance therapy is also aimed at reducing rates of recidivism; according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 30% of adult offenders are re-arrested within 6 months of their release, and within 3 years, 67% return to prison. Dance to Be Free programs are now available in prisons in Mississippi, Nebraska, Arkansas, Washington and more, and Lucy Wallace even spoke at the first TEDx talk live-streamed from a prison. If you know a prison that could benefit from Dance to be Free, get in touch at dancetobefree.org/faq/.

You realize these people are in prison for a reason. They aren’t the victims.

yeah that's kind've how it was portrayed and I thought it was a bit disingenuous

Keanu Meade just because someone goes to prison it does not mean they stop being a person. Prison is supposed to rehabilitate people so they don’t commit more crime when they get out. This helps them.

@@sac8483 That's true, and I think on the whole this is a fine program. The bit at the end has the woman talking about learning from her mistakes, which is a proper focus for prison. However, +Keanu Meade also has a good point. If you watch just 1:05 it sounds like that audio is from a different interview, because it talks purely about working with abuse victims. And while it's true that often a bad experience may be a contributor to making criminal decisions, it's still weird to talk about them as a group as if "victims of abuse" is the one descriptor.

And this is a rehabilitation program. It seems you might be more interested in punishment, than helping people integrate back into society.

Only women? That is sexist. Also the whole point of prison is that you are not free.

300 Swords of light It’s not sexist. Only 6.8 percent of the prison population are female. We must make prisons more attractive to females to help stop male domination and bring about more gender equality in ALL establishments of society.

Kenneth Murphy absolutely correct we need more women in prison.

@@itsgoingtobeok-justbreathe4808 I definitely would somehow trigger men in jail, but I think my sword of light would be liberty, love and freedom. If that could help as a mindset, I don't know, but I know that one can train the brain!
