First hand story of altitude sickness at Barafu Camp...In 2019 I did the same route. As we ascended the various camps, my pulse ox reading at evening check-in was always the lowest in the group...but I was keeping up fine until the day from Karanga to Barafu, where I started to lag behind. I immediately took a nap when I got to camp. At evening check-in, my pulse ox was 70(!!!) but I still felt "sort of" ok. I knew I couldn't summit that night, so I proposed that I would stay at Barafu while the others summited and then descend with the group the next day. The head guide was fine with this (in hindsight he was incompetent), but as the sun started to set an inner voice told me this was not a good idea and I should descend to the next lower camp. Accompanied by one guide plus a helper, I got to Millennium camp (12,500) around 10 pm. Little did I realize that behind the scenes a bunch of porters would bring down my tent, duffel and had food waiting for me when I arrived. I ate a quick bite and started to lay down in my sleeping bag, but as I went horizontal I heard a Darth-Vader-like rattle in my breath. It was clear I had a pulmonary edema and had to descend further. Off we went again and got to Mweka (10,000) at around 2 am, where I spent the night. By morning, I was completely fresh again and by 12 noon reached the Mweka gate at 5500...which is the exact time when I got a call from my buddy that he was at Uhuru Peak. The 7 pm - 2 am descent on a beautiful clear night with an almost full moon and the sparkling lights of Arusha in the valley will remain one of my all-time great memories despite the fact that I was exhausted and winded. Moral of the story: 1) no matter how good a shape you're in, altitude can get to you, 2) guides don't all know what they're doing -- listen to the inner voice!!!

We are all amazed when we loose a skilled, knowledgeable person and stand in disbelief when someone unprepared, un knowledgeable and unskilled seemingly waltzes through a car wreck in progress only to come out on the other side without a scratch. No one knows the date and time of our departure. The trick is in how we get there. I can only pray when it's my time I was useful in someway for at least one other person. Dixie, I admire you so much. I can only say I want you to be able to get home to hug your mom also. Make sure when you do get home that you give her the biggest hug you have ever given to anyone. She may look at you like, "what in the world is wrong" just look back at her and say "Absolutely Nothing" and top it off with a big smile.

As my travel doctor told me before my Killi climb.”The only cure for altitude sickness is to go down. Do you understand? Let me repeat that. So do t tough it out.” I succumbed to it after reaching the peak and was escorted down the mountain in a modified Stokes basket by 6 porters. Amazing what thick air does for the lungs.

The end of this one left me without words. WOW!!! I love that you've been using all this classical music lately, it really adds to the videos. I don't know who picks the music but I assume that's Aaron so great job Aaron. Also I always think it's so cool to see the shade move over the mountains as the sun rises/sets, it's a reminder that you're somewhere cool lol. THAT WAS AMAZING

I summited on 9/24/23. On that day, we passed by a hiker who had died that morning. Her body was covered and a guide was there awaiting a stretcher. I've worked in healthcare over 40 years and have seen hundreds of deaths, but this one rattled me a bit. Anyone considering this trek needs to invest in quality guide services who have medical training and equipment. Thanks for sharing Dixie. We did the same route and your videos are amazing and bring back some wonderful memories. Congratulations on the marriage!

Having done some valid research After a trip to Utah to hike- Learned that altitude sickness is UNrelated to one’s fitness level, or age, oe preparation; can’t be predicted for an individual but going from say, sea level w/ little overnight rest @ altitude to exerting/hiking fast at over a mile high (5,280 ft) or more is not the best idea. Again- no matter how many stairclimbers or reps or cardio whatever you do routinely, your body will acclimate as it chooses to the oxygen pressure level & best to spend some time Sleeping at altitude a night or two. Before stressing your cardiovascular system beyond what it is used to. It isn’t about your fitness level but rather about what one’s cardiovascular system is accustomed to. It’s about physics of the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere at that level, & personal physiology, not individual fitness or weight, so no shame, no blame, if your body takes more time than the other folks in the group to acclimate to altitude, it’s OK. From someone who LIVES @ sea level &is a biologist, & hiker, avid traveler & a backpacker, etc. Professor Judy

Thank you for sharing. I have the pleasure of going to Tanzania in August of 2024. And we are only hiking only to the first base camp. I can’t wait to see just a glimpse of what you have. Thank you for the inspiration.❤

Hi Dixie I climbed Kilimanjaro about six weeks ago and thank god I had no problem and the rest of the team made it as well but I did see a helicopter coming onto camp sites on three different days but I don’t know for what . (John from Ireland Co. Kerry)

I’m on the fence. On one hand I think, yea, this is cool. I’ll do that. Then I see all of the people and the lines and think, forget that.

And the suspense builds... Dixie, it's so interesting watching your adventures, and particularly this one. I'm glad the segments are no longer than they are, as they are so stressful. I feel like I'm right there with y'all. I know you survive it, but it's still hair-raising.

That is indeed sobering. I have read that the number of deaths is higher, as they don't count people who get sick and die from sickness after some time (such as HAPE or HACE). So the number may be as high as 60, but very possibly above 30. That's still between one and two promille, which would be excellent odds for surgery, and I viewed that as an acceptable risk... That being said, as you spend 7 or 8 days on the mountain, your risk is lower. The long routes are much safer! That last day, though... So hard! And you get to the peak, tears and all, thinking "this is the hardest thing I've ever done", and then starts the multi-hour walk down... feels unending. Good luck, and enjoy the crazy experience. Nothing like it :)

A glaciated mountain with crevasses seems more dangerous. Mount Rainier has about 3 deaths a year if you average it out over 120 years. Many people that climb to summits like K2 and Everest train on Rainier and Denali (57 deaths per year) first using roped teams.
@Henning_Rech

Mont Blanc has also some 30-50 fatalities per year.

Looks like U2 are doing fine. I imagine they have a couple bottles of O2 handy. Oh, I’m not good at converting meters to feet without getting my calculator out. Also, what is the temperature at night? Did you ever figure out what happened after the helicopter ride you took? I hope you make it along with your mate.😊❤

The ANSWER is very SIMPLE regarding DANGER ⚡ in AFRICA ‼️ ( I liver in AFRICA ‼️ for SEVERAL YEARS) it's ALWAYS DANGEROUS, because not ONLY , for the POSSIBILITIES of ACCIDENT , and ARMED CONFLICTS , any MEDICAL EVACUATION , is CHALLENGING , and PRIMITIVE ( even if you see and HELICOPTER 🚁 there ) and Tanzania is a BACKWARD COUNTRY... .
