As someone who has been in the medical profession for nearly two decades, Dr. Berry is honest and refreshing. Modern healthcare, in hospitals especially, has a rack 'em and stack 'em mentality. Gone are the days of honest and beneficial patient and family health education.

I’m a pretty smart person and probably could have become a doctor or PA-C myself, but I chose not to go into healthcare for this very reason. Doctors are mostly subject to doing treatments based on a pattern of treatment that the health insurance is dictating, which sort of handcuffs the doctor in being able to treat patients according to what they feel may be the best option. In some ways doctors don’t really get options anymore. I just don’t think I would really be happy as a doctor. I’m glad we have doctors for emergency care, but I just don’t feel like I would enjoy working in today’s modern day healthcare system.

All my wife’s markers are inline, she’s not obese, blood pressure is spectacular but LDL is slightly elevated. She cried when the doctor called to inform her that the she was calling in a prescription and to pick it up ASAP. Not a single discussion about diet changes. The stress I seen in my wife’s face was more damaging than the cholesterol.

I recently had a huge amount of blood work done. My A1C was 5, my fasting blood sugar was 70, my fasting insulin level was 2.2. In addition, a CAC scan earlier in the year was 0. What was my doctor focused on? My LDL was 135 ("Much too high") and he is sure that my fasting insulin level is too low from "excessive fasting". I will be sending him the studies and scheduling an appointment with him in January. By the way - in my early 30's, I was on WW and had an LDL/overall cholesterol level that had my doctor dancing with delight. I was also waking up hearing people plotting to kill me in the alley below my bedroom window and I was suicidally depressed. That sent me on an 18 year journey on antidepressant medication. I quit the medication 13 years ago. I found Keto three years ago. I feel fortunate to have survived the journey.

I would use the tools Dr Berry has provided in an older video to find a new doctor. I used the tools and I'm meeting with my new "keto friendly" doctor on Jan 6. My old doctor continued to push the statins on me because my LDL was elevated. She ignored my 4.7 A1C, my 89 HDL and my Triglycerides were 42. The fact they just want to throw pills at a number without taking into consideration other metrics is infuriating. I haven't had a CAC done yet, but plan on discussing it with the new guy at my appointment.

My mom (now deceased from Alzheimer's) had very high total cholesterol, over 600 - diagnosed in the late 80's. Then through the years the medical community kept lowering the cholesterol thresholds so they could prescribe more drugs. It started back then with a threshold of 300 total, then a few years later, it went down to 250, and now we're sitting at 200 as the new max. Mom obeyed the "rules" and went on statins. While her numbers looked good to the docs, she felt like crap all the time, could barely move, said she felt like she had the flu 24/7. Caused a lot of marriage issues for her too. After a few years, she self-diagnosed herself with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia, not knowing that one of the major side effects of statins was achy muscles and malaise. Those were only the start of her issues. Then came brain fog, memory loss, and personality changes. She could no longer work and had to go on disability. She even had black outs. She was a wreck of side effects and too many pharma drugs, but never made the connection. If only we had had access to the information we have now, we would have figured out these issues. We knew a few things back then, but not enough and by the time we found out, it was too late. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her late 50's, died of it at 72, 5 years ago. She also ate a very high carb diet, believing low fat/high carb was good for her. And when not watching her diet, ate lots of sugar. She was also on several anti-depressants. Her body was just so toxic and inflamed and we had no idea just how bad it really was. Today, I think our family (who are avid researchers and critical thinkers) could have helped her and prevented or at least delayed the Alzheimer's and improved her quality of life in the mean time.

I find it so distburing to hear this type of story over and over again. And then I went and got lab work and the same thing happened to me. I eat once or twice a day, whole foods low carb all that stuff - my trigs were rock bottom, hdl 65 but ldl a few points over 200. and my Dr called me first thing the next morning urging lipitor over the phone, unwilling to listen to anything else. Based on everything i search, Id rather focus on getting more exercise, resistance training, seeing if i can get my hdl higher and focusing on better sleep habits and getting my sleep tested. Its like the medical system has become so rigidly designed around treating diseases with drugs, ignoring the latest research, and completely ignoring nutrition science and prevention. It is honestly the one of the most disturbing trends once you actually dig down and try to educate yourself.

Now people are more likely to stop visiting because doctors aren’t helping due to lack of knowledge from biased education. That needs to be turned around because in the long run they will loose money from patients no longer visiting- even if it is a well check up. Everyone is going to end up saying why bother. Then business will drop for the medical industry. And word is going around that diners are using vegetable oils so customers will stop eating out until that gets changed and those owners will loose money too. Silly. Hi Dr Berry. I was told by my GP here in England that my cholesterol is too high. They measure it differently to you. I was told it was 8.5 and that it should be less than 5. Also that he had looked at the risk score chart which tells them when patients are at high risk of stroke, heart attack. Top score being 10. He said I should take a statin. I have been on them in the past and could not tolerate the side effects. I don't worry about it any more . your video is very reassuring and prior to this I watched a talk by Dr Aseem Malhotra who said " if your cholesterol is high then congratulations you will probably live longer"! In my opinion big pharma want us sick so that they can sell us drugs that make us sicker. I am seventy years old and I fast, eat a low carb healthy fat diet and I feel great. This morning I walked two and a half miles on the beach with my dog. I do that most days weather permitting. 😊

Statins killed my father. By the time I found out what he was on, it was too late. He underwent a double bypass due to heavy tobacco use which resulted in COPD. He radically changed his lifestyle and was doing very well until the statins. I found out after six months of this mitochondrial toxin being pumped into his body and got him off the drugs. The result? Diabetes and high BP: GONE. however, the damage to muscle tissue prevented him from his normal activity level and two years later he was gone. Now, my doctor is trying to push this poison on me. I am very healthy, and active but, her issue is slightly elevated LDL. I told her to do some research. After medical school, doctors receive their education from drug companies and it never ceases to amaze me how so many doctors are devoid of critical thinking skills. Thank you Dr. Berry for not being one of the drones! If they were like you, we would have many more happy, healthy people!

For years my parents would say we had high cholesterol in the family and say how bad it was, to keep an eye on mine. Over time mine started to go up just a smidge when eating “healthy”, but not too high. Total is around 204, LDL is 122, HDL is 68, triglycerides is 50- but this was before carnivore- was more Mediterranean. Switched to carnivore mid Sept. So will be interesting to see what has changed. Now age 46 my doc said to watch my cholesterol, but down deep I know the meds out there aren’t good and is high cholesterol really a problem. I ask “why” to everything, sounded like what I hear kids call ”sus” when people say high LDL is bad, especially if triglycerides are low and HDL high, all within good ratios. Haha! Now I know the truth after doing research and watching Dr. Berry, Dr. Baker, Dave Feldman, and a few others. If my doc says anything about my cholesterol again I am referring Dr. Berry and Dr. Baker’s videos to them with their books. I am going to say,“the info you have learned about cholesterol in med school is false. Time to catch up on the science. No meds for me, thank you! Have a good day!” ☺️

If your cholesterol starts climbing WITH AGE that most probably is a SYMPOTOM of insulin resistance/hyperinsulinaema. It is a pattern where TG are also high and HDL low. You need to worry about high insulin, not about the cholesterol (which is a symptom of high insulin at best). I’ve always been in pretty good shape and have never been overweight nor had high cholesterol. I have also followed you & Dr Anthony Chaffee during the year. I’m days away from being 63 years old (5’8 130-135lbs and lift weights 4 times a week). So after close to a year of eating keto/carnivore I had my annual physical with blood work last Thursday. My total cholesterol=261, LDL=164, HDL=80 & Triglycerides=87. So for the last 3-4 days I have been digging deeper into cholesterol and was expecting what I received today (an email from my Dr that he wants to put me on meds). I do not plan on doing that. I have stopped the statins since a year ago, my total cholesterol is high, hdl is normal, triglycerides normal, LDL high as per the doctor,..but I told my GP there's no way I go back to statins, ...I came to the conclusion that whatever is meant to happen it will happen, but I am feeling much better now, so as long if you feel fine then just listen to your body.

Several years ago, I had high total cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol. Because I also had type 2 diabetes, supposedly, the numbers are different, then if you don't have diabetes. Well, the Dr. put me on a statin, I guess it was the lowest dose, and while it worked at lowering my cholesterol, it also affected my cognitive skills. Never before had I had a problem with expressing my thoughts; but lots of times, I was at a loss for words. Anyway, after three months, my cholesterol was down, but, I told my doctor, what it had done to me. So, she took me off the statin. I want you to know, that even though I have gotten a lot of my cognitive skills back, I am still not totally there. When my Dr. mentions Cholesterol medication now, I say, but remember, I can't take a statin. She did say that there are other medications out there, besides statins. I am hoping that this way of eating, will help me to totally recover the rest of my cognitive skills. Thank you, Dr. Berry, for all that you do for us.

Anyone who is put on these drugs have already been to their doctor for some reason and a big majority would have already experienced some event, so it stands to reason not counting for this, that these people were already high risk and likely close to death and just happened to be on medication rather than the medication being a contributing factor. That aside, I'm sure these drugs have horrible side effects.

I already made a change a little over 3 years ago when I took myself OFF a statin. Now 3 years on keto and doing fine. LDL-C is high by their standards so I insisted my dr prescribe a detailed lipid profile and my small dense LDL was unmeasurable and HDL is high and triglycerides below 100 so where’s the problem?

After the information I’ve gotten from Dr. Berry and other studies I quit statins because I was given statins for my age group automatically. Not a good reason to take statins. Side effects of statins is something I do not miss. Thanks for getting this information out to all of us who are looking for a healthier lifestyle.

I had extreme light headedness when standing up, back pain, muscles aches, and brain fog. I was on a high dosage of rosovastain (off brand Crestor if I remember correctly). Quit the statin, LDL skyrocketed, don’t care. HDL has increased as I’ve eaten healthier. I’ll say, I know most people do carnivore diet here, but I’m more traditional keto, and it seems a huge bowl of kale each day really increased my HDL levels. It was the only major change I made between labs. As long as triglycerides are low and HDL is moderately high, I’m okay with this. It seems to me diet does effect LDL without question but everyone has their own genetic “normal” level.

Wonderful video. I have an acquaintance that is 48, and his doc just put him on LDL lowering meds. His first day after taking the pills, he got sick (aches, pains, migraine, nausea) and was in bed for two days. His wife told me she thinks the meds are responsible. They almost went to the ER, but he went back to work today. I sent her Dr. Berry's cholesterol videos. No response. But I asked her if she still thought the meds were responsible for her husband getting ill. She said, "I don't know. We'll see after this next round. He is currently only at 50% of what the doc wants him to take." Ugh....

My husbands cardiologoist wants his LDL < 60. He is now on Repatha in addition to Crestor and Zetia and it was 26 on his last lab draw just before Christmas. He sees his PCP next week and his cardiologist the week after. I'm taking him a copy of this study. I hope he will read it.

I believe a LDL of 26 is way to low for normal health.

@@robertmiller2872 We saw his PCP yesterday who agrees. He suggested cutting the Crestor to either a lower dosage or stopping it but is leaving it up to his cardiologist who we see next week. If he is okay with the level of 26 I think it might be time to look for another cardiologist.

@susanjones3549 - WOW! WOW! Three different cholesterol-lowering drugs, each using different mechanisms, but all with similar sets of serious adverse side effects, is sheer medical insanity. Even with FH and prior heart attack or stroke or stents, it doesn't make any sense. Have any of the doctors explained to you at all what their treatment program is supposed to accomplish and what risks your husband has that make them necessary. It has to be a lot more than the overly simplistic, unproven theory that cholesterol causes heart disease. They owe you and your husband a complete explanation, not more prescriptions for unexplained drugs.

Dear Dr. Berry. The idea of a confidence interval is that you look at BOTH boundaries, not just the lower one. So, at 250 mg/dL, your hazard ratio could be anywhere between 0.7 and 1.6 with 95% certainty, according to this chart. Going by this chart, the wise thing to do would be to lower your LDL cholesterol level from 250mg/dL to a little above 120 mg/dL. As an aside: this chart shows the association between LDL cholesterol and mortality risk, it says nothing about causality. Which is stressed by the researchers themselves: "Further studies are warranted to determine the causal relationship between LDL-C level and all-cause mortality."

My problem with the lipped hypothesis is it goes against bio chemistry I was taught decades ago. CMF cellular membrane fluidity. Shows lowering cholesterol to a point where cell destruction is guaranteed.

Thanks Dr Berry for this info. I'm taking these papers to my Cardiologist who is trying to get me to take Repatha. I don't want it. I started my low carb journery a year ago and my blood sugar is now normal and my triglycerides are cut in half down to 156 but working on getting it lower and down 25 pounds still working on that too. He didn't care last check up but was still pushing Repatha. He still insists on the LDL. I feel armed now on my refusal and continuing my diet journey to good health. I won't quit. Not bad for 63. ;) Thank you again. Time to find a new doctor!! Blessings all!!

When you are fat adapted and not running primarily on glucose your body needs more cholesterol. So it may be that the reason the error bars are so large at the high end is that high cholesterol may be preventative if you are fat adapted but negative if you are a carb addict.
