A brand new renovation video series from House & Garden packed with ideas to copy. In 2018 House & Garden began following the renovation of the British designer and creative consultant Matilda Goad's new home. Our aim was to create a video series charting the journey of a house over a period of years, to reassure people decorating their own homes that it doesn’t happen overnight. That creating a layered, interesting interior is something that happens in stages, and that those stages can take a really long time. In the first episode we follow the journey of Matilda's living room.

Wow, I love this design so much! The colours are fantastic. I like how we see the process and how the design has changed over the years. Much more realistic in how we actually live and design our own spaces!

Love the bright, yet not so saturated palette. Charming, not shouty 🌝 Mizzle comes out of its shell when in its full glory. The strong, yet warm and inviting Calke Green door trim helps link inside and out. I’m also firmly in Camp Darker Trim. White stops the eye; dark is restful. And it seems more architectural, or something … 🤔 I like the contrast, too.

OMGOODNESS! Loved this and am a bit spun out that Matilda is a character I have, well the way she talks is exactly the same as a voice I do when talking about my love of english interiors ( english accent and slight lisp etc ) So happy to have found a real her that is super inspirational!

If you removed the words "slight lisp" this comment would sound vaguely complimentary. Lots of people with lisps or those unable to say letters like r or w, or th are a lot of the time unaware of it. Having it pointed out to them can make them feel very self conscious, foolish and embarrassed. Unless that's what you were going for.

Mizzle is actually a Cornish term for something between seaspray and drizzle. I believe Farrow & Ball even pay reference to it on their description of the origins for the colour as hailing from the West Country. Wonderful colour choice.

It was a Saturday morning, very early while walking through the moors that I spotted this interesting gem quite unmanicured with an overgrown edge. I looked around wondering if I dared to ring the doorbell the doorbell. This lovely man came to the door he was in the middle of having his breakfast and ended up showing me around while I wondered if we were alone. It was the gem I thought it might be and the rest is story telling history. Only the English.

Unpopular opinion/observation; I’ve watched a lot of these videos now and something has struck me and made me curious… why is it that all the people are so posh/ nicely spoken? Absolutely nothing against it don’t get me wrong. I’m just putting two and two together and drawing the conclusion that it’s only ‘old money’ posh/wealthy people who seem to acquire these homes and become designers etc. Hoping my ‘maths’ so-to-speak is wrong. Just wondering where all the folk from different socioeconomic backgrounds / demographics who made their money are. Obviously you need a lot of money to afford these homes, in these locations and do them up to this level but there are plenty of wealthy people - both self-made and inherited wealth - who live in fabulous, bespoke and interesting homes with wonderfully curated decor but I’m only seeing the same old (lovely!) posh people and it’s giving the impression that this is only for them? ..probably reading wayyy too much in to it. It’s 2am and I have my overthinking brain turned up to 11! 😅

I love the kitchen, esp. the dining nook & the bedroom. But the living room somehow looks chaotic, unfinished and not calm for me.. Maybe it's bc. of the many little windows and bc. the sofas are in a way scattered. The back wall thus is somehow empty.. I think I would definitely put the yellow/main sofa to this back wall..

I love how British homes are constructed with real brick and stone, just as in my home country. I now live in Canada, and to me, walls seem to be cardboard, bricks are not real, it is like living in a fake play house. How I miss real stone and brick walls!

Well, it is a pink verging on a rather elegant lavender, which softens and pretties-up the Calke Green. Anytime you can mix purple and green and keep it ‘artful’, I say go for it. 🌝

I like a more modern aesthetic BUT this room speaks to me the use of colour is simply amzing love it! One thing I would change is wall hang the TV maybe get The Frame TV by Samsung (or something similar with the one connect cable in the wall, this would pull double duty as art when not watching TV and look much cleaner. Otherwise this room and use of colour is just brilliant!

Video Minute 00:20 ; This is all I want for Roger Schiess's Lake City house: one long room, as long as possible, no interior walls or coves, a plain and simple Great Room.
