Been reading Frank Herbert's Dune for thirty years and still getting references. Scytale in Children of Dune. Not sky tale as I have been pronouncing it.
The word scytale ( ski - tally ) is being used even today in Greek. In simple form it's the piece of wood the runners give to each other when they finish their sprint and the next continues with his part. Metaphorically, we use it when someone leaves something unfinished in the middle and then we say "someone else took the scytale and continue where the first stopped".
