I really enjoy your videos !! from what i've seen they are really historically accurate and objective and seem to avoid political potholes of nationalism. My personal thoughts as to the term "Greece" is that Greece seems to appear in the 15th century Royal Society English writings/translations from what I've personally read, that a more appropriate name would be the Latin "Grecia " Land of the Greeks or in the Hebrew "Javan" but the areas you describe geographically are supported by a lot of historical texts albeit the modern nation of Greece now encompasses a lot of these regions and most people can relate to "Greece" as a geographic location. Some suggestions for videos I would like to see is the origins of the "Greek" or learned peoples including nobles, aristocrats, philosophers and how they developed over time and also the origins of the Macedonians as from what I've seen the common opinion is that they originated in the Peloponnese. Another topic is that in earlier videos you have described that the Macedonians were possibly a Doric speaking tribe which I'm sure is the Koine Greek language that was a universal dialect of the Old Greek spoken by many tribes of the Balkan peninsula, this topic is of great interest to me also as this has shaped a lot of popular opinion as to the ethnicity of the Macedonians. Really looking forward to the continuation of this series and I can only imagine the quantity of work that has gone into this existing series let alone future ones!!
@ArchaiaHistoria
@ArchaiaHistoria Год назад
Thanks a lot for the kind words! Modern geopolitics and nationalism is definitely a minefield when explaining ancient identities. Even our understanding of what “Greece” is, is dependent on geographical, cultural and linguistic context. Your video suggestions sound quite interesting, I’ll have to give them a look once I’m done with the current back pile. And don’t worry Philip is making a return*

@georgios_5342
@georgios_5342 5 лет назад
@Nom Anor Because they didn't that's why. When your ancestors were probably screeching and trying to find caves, the Greeks had scientists and philosophers and get this: historians. With real, factual evidence (Skopia doesn't have those even today) and they would all conclude that Macedonia was in fact Greek. There is no need for historical revisionism, but even if you didn't take this into account, you couldn't prove in a million years that Macedonia wasn't a part of the Hellenic world. The Greeks didn't call them foreigners, only those with political interests did (the kind of politics that goes on today did evolve from the Greek democracy after all). So the people that had conflicting political interests with the Macedonians would even argue that they weren't even Greek at all (at the time Greek meant civilised in the Greek world). But that wasn't based on facts. The facts are that their language was a dialect of Greek, their culture was pretty much the same as the rest of the Greeks, they participated in the Olympic games, which were only for Greeks, most of them had Greek names that even a modern Greek can understand (however as in any Greek state there were some regional names) and in all the official recordings that we have from the Macedonians, written in Attic, the Greek lingua franca, they themselves considered themselves to be Greek. And fun fact: they still do. Strabo, one of the most well-known ancient Greek historians, said: ΕΣΤΙΝ ΟΥΝ ΕΛΛΑΣ ΚΑΙ Η ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑ. Which means: So, Macedonia too, is Greece.

@Nom Anor The Greeks considered almost everyone that did not behave like them as barbarians at the beginning. You also have to look at the politics of the Greek States. Macedonia worked in a completely different way than the rest of the Greek States. You must consider that accepting a powerful state like Macedonia to mess with the balance of power in Greece was not in the interest of the Greek States.

In anqiutiy Greece was not a united country like today. it was still region where an assortment of states with Greek identity lived. Yunan from Ίωνες we've been called to our Eastern borders. You have to understand that Greece 🇬🇷 was a vast country who occupied many others all these people gave us different names but for the local population it's Hellas for thousands of years now

SO you say Greece but Greece didn't exist as aname back then so Who is what and what is who? Phillip entering an area suggests he entered another country not a fellow state as people want us to believe. This thus proves well shows Macedonia was a kingdom and separate to the southern part of the Aegean sea. Macedonia is an independent Kingdom and are not Hellenic. Sadly the greeks of today don't want you to believe this ….

@Kaly Let us compare to today. There are many many countries with English written coins, are these countries all English? Also I am Macedonian but I communicate using the English language. I prefer the Economic structure of the UK compared to Macedonia. Thus If I go to Macedonia and Implement Similar Micro/macro economics and then mint coins to allow trade with a Wealthy nation to start commerce Is Macedonia the UK? The truth is no one knows 100% But what I do know is that Macedonia was 700km away and if one was to walk the distance as that was how the majority of transport was it was over 15 days away on foot if one travels at 5km an hour for 8 hours a day... THAT SIR IS ANOTHER WORLD AWAY,..... another country you could say, and as you Athenians loved to call us.... BARBARIANS. SO please when one visits an area and brings back ideas It doesn't mean they are now this new country. Athens had good ideas I will give them that just like people gained a lot from China... is the whole world China. Please Greece today stole Macedonia Under the Treaty of Bucharest. That we do know. Good Day.

@@potatopack " Greece didn't exist as aname back then" *Ἑλλάς* Nom. - ἡ Ἑλλᾰ́ς Gen. - τῆς Ἑλλᾰ́δος Dat. - τῇ Ἑλλᾰ́δῐ Acc. - τὴν Ἑλλᾰ́δᾰ Voc. - Ἑλλᾰ́ς The word did exist!!! For fucks sake, why do you and your people keep saying that? Strabo, 7.9: "Macedonia, of course, is a part of Greece[..]" (..έστι μεν ουν Ελλάς και η Μακεδονίαν[...]) Greek was not a foreign language to Macedonia. according to most linguists and philologists, the Macedonians spoke a unique doric variant from Northwestern Greek stock. The Pella Curse Tablet substantiates this view. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pella_curse_tablet The names like Philippos, Alexandros, Antigonos, Demetrios, Kassandros etc. are all Greek. The toponyms such as Aigai, Dion, Argos Orestis, Herakleia Lynkestis, Pella were all Greek. Military terms such as Ile, Taxeis, Strategos, Phalanx, Hypaspistai, Pezhetairoi, Argyraspides, Somatophylakes, Hetairoi, Thorakitai, Machairophoroi, Prodromoi, Toxotai, yadayadayada were all Greek. Your analogy with english coinage is embarissing... "Please Greece today stole Macedonia" There has been a recorded residence of Greeks in the region of Macedonia since Antiquity and even before the arrival of pontic refugees, the Greeks were the predominant population in the south (real Macedonia), even rebelling against the Ottomans in 1821. Greece stole nothing. Your people in those times were always recorded as "Bulgarians" in population censuses. Emmanouel Pappas (Filiki Etaireia) referred to himself in 1821 as "Leader and Defender of Macedonia", while your ancestors roamed around identifying as Bulgarians. "Athenians loved to call us.... BARBARIANS" The Athenians called everybody Barbarians since they were arrogant snobs. The Aetolians and other speakers of the Aeolian dialect were labeled as barbaric. The Macedonians identified as Greeks. "Now that these descendants of Perdiccas are Greeks, as they themselves say, I myself chance to know" ~ Herodotus V, 22, 1 [Don Kagan, Sterling professor of Classics and ancient Greek History, Yale University] "We know the ancient Macedonians were fundamentally Greeks, that is to say they were Greek speakers and ethnically they were Greeks" Eugene Borza, Historian, Penn University, "Macedonian Redux", p.260 "...Modern Slavs, both from the Former Yug. Rep. of Macedonia and Bulgarians cannot establish a link with antiquity, in contrast with the Greeks. The Slavs entered the Balkans ten centuries after the demise of the Ancient Kingdom of Alexander. Only the most radical nationalists Slavic emigrants of the US, Canada and Australia even attempt to establish connection with antiquity..."

@@enyalios316 Honestly keep creating these stories. EVERY MACEDONIAN IN THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS MACEDONIA IS MACEDONIA..... Tito managed to brain wash everyone? Good story kiddo, Secondly We are bulgarian..... Um didn't you say we came from the north east in 6th century the story changes.. get a freaking brain. Go read any literature before the age of the internet when the greeks created a campaign to fabricate the world to manipulate and change history to support the theft of Aegean Macedonia due to the treaty of Bucharest. When you twats uncovered the tomb of Phillip in the 1970s you guys went OMG we need to claim this. Macedonia knows Phillip is Macedonian not greek. The way he was buried is the way Macedonians bury their dead. The greeks bury their dead in their method. Now Stop making up stories and quoting text from fabricated sources to support the greek propaganda train. Go look at all the history of Aegean Macedonia... the names were all renamed hellenised to be greek. They had old Macedonian names. if anyone is reading this, this is another example of how Greece has tried to eradicate all traces of Macedonian history and culture from the Aegean Macedonia area. GO do some research. Its actually fun to see what you uncover and realise the bullshit the greeks have sold to the world and makes us all mugs, except the Macedonians. Enjoy your souvlaki and have a calamari from me

@@potatopack I don't care if you truly think I am lying. "EVERY MACEDONIAN IN THE WHOLE WORL.... blablabla" "Tito managed to brain blablabla" "Go read any literature befo.(..) blablabla" How about I quote some men who know the literature... since I obviously do not... "Today's members of FYROM [Rep. of Macedonia] speak a Slavic language codified only after 1944. They are descended from people who were called, and at times called themselves, Serbs or Bulgarians" [Keith Brown, 'The Past in Question, Modern Macedonia and the Uncertainty of a Nation, (2003) Princeton University Press, p.2] "Macedonia is a Greek speaking Kingdom in northern Greece." [Robin Lane Fox, Oxford University] [Eugene Borza, Pennsylvania State University, Macedonia Redux] "Modern Slavs, both Macedonian and Bulgarian, cannot establish a link with antiquity, as the Slavs entered the Balkans centuries AFTER the demise of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom" "It should be noted that there is NO CONNECTION between the ancient Macedonians of Alexander the Great who were related to other Greek [Hellenic] tribes..........and the so-called modern "Macedonians " of today [of the Rep. of Macedonia - FYROM] who are of Slavic origin and related to the Bulgarians" [David H Levinson, Anthropologist, 'Encyclopaedia of World Cultures', p. 239] Herodotus states, "Now that these descendants of Perdiccas (Macedonians) are Greeks, as they themselves say, I myself chance to know" Jonathan M. Hall, “Classical Archaeology and the Ancient Historian”, University of Chicago, 2014 “The claim on the part of the Slavic Republic to the name Macedonia and to its inhabitants' descent from the ancient Macedonians represents, at best, a THEFT of Greek national property, heritage, and identity, and, at worst, a thinly veiled irredentist aspiration to the Greek territory the Slavs themselves termed as 'Aegean Macedonia'...” Dr David Gordon Mitten, Dr James Loeb, Professors of Classical Art and Archaeology, Harvard University "...We do not understand how the modern inhabitants of ancient PAEONIA ( the region SlavoMacedonia is settled ), who speak Slavic - a language and people introduced into the Balkans about a millennium after the death of Alexander - can claim him as their national hero. Alexander the Great was thoroughly and indisputably Greek..." [Ernst Badian, Emeritus Professor of History, Harvard University] "We have now become accustomed to regarding the ancient Macedonians as NORTHERN GREEKS." "[...] you passed a decree calling on me to make common cause with the rest of the Greeks against him" ~ Philipp II. of Macedon counts himself among the rest of the Greeks (Dem. 12 6) "Cnaeus Octavius, who was also present, translated the address into Greek" (Liv. 45 29) when Paullus Macedonicus addressed the Macedonians, he had Cnaeus Octavius translate his speech into Greek for them. Some more??? "you guys went OMG we need to claim this" "I am the Leader and defender of Macedonia" ~ Emmanouel Pappas (Filiki Etaireia) Ever heard of the "Makedonomachoi"? This is the seal of the Greek Macedonian Committee from 1904 depicting Alexander the Great and Basileos the Bulgar Slayer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Seal_of_the_Greek-Macedonian_Committee.jpg "They had old Macedonian names" Oh yeah... old Macedonian names such as Solun and Vodena instead of Thessaloniki and Edessa, the way how the real Macedonians called those places. Yeah... I didn't know that the name Thessaloniki DID NOT derive from Θεσσᾰλός (Thessalos) = Thessalian, and from νῑ́κη (niki) =victory.. Would you please tell me the "real" bulgaro-monkeydonian meaning of the place... Oh and could you please correct all the other "real macedonian" meanings of these macedonian words??? Μακεδόνες (Macedonians), (μᾰκεδνός, makednos = tall, ) "highlanders" in Greek... Alexandros (αλεξείν, alexein = protect, άνδρος (andros) = man, "protector of men") - Demetrios (masculine form of Δημήτηρ = Demeter/ "Mother Earth") - Seleukos (aeolic- Ζα, Za = very - Λεύκος, Leukos = white) - Antigonos (αντί, anti = against, γόνος, gonos = offspring) - Antiochos (αντί, anti = against, έχω, ekho = grasp) Military words: Argyraspides (Άργυρος/Argyros = silver, Ασπίς/Aspis = shield), Pezhetairoi (πεζός/pezos = "on foot", ἑταῖροι/hetairoi = companions) Hypaspists (υπό/hypo = beneath, Ασπίς/Aspis = Shield) Prodromoi (Πρόδρομος = forerunner) You haven't addressed any of my points yet. You are just bitching about the evil evil Greeks and how I am just lying. You are the typical "out of arguments" kinda guy. Go cry you brave Macedonian

Oh and btw. The macedonian burial ceremonies stem from the archaic/mycenean Greek period where the Greeks buried their dead in burial mounds (toloi). The 192 people who were killed at Marathon were also buried in a burial mound. The method just came out of trend in the south.

Daniel 8:22 Not same power as ILLYRICUM. ILLYRICUM is the ground floor for Holy City Jerusalem from Jerusalem to Rome 1500 quake miles. But this people are left without a lineages and destroyed their own people. No can can produce a word of wisdom anymore for them because that would make God a liar 🤥 five words are fulfilled TWO GRACE ABORTED THREE LEFT BELONG TO OTHERS AROUND THEM. Isaiah 14 12How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. b 14I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” 15But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.
