@ArchaiaHistoria
@ArchaiaHistoria 6 лет назад
Well it's a mixture of a lot of research and other maps I find online. They're drawn by me in Illustrator and take forever to make because of the layering of the map but I couldn't find a single definitive map of Greece in 360 BCE. The only one I could find was one in about 350 BCE but there is a big difference in borders as you will see later in the series. I'm glad you like them, you can find them on imgur if you want to use them at all.

Nice video and as a greek i am impressed you put the "archaia historia" phrase well done! If you are interested anyway is written Αρχαία Ιστορία in our language meaning ancient history.. Also since you tried writing archaia istoria you could use in your videos Philip's original name in Greek which is Φίλιππος-ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΣ (philippos) from the word philos(friend) + ippos(horse) meaning literally in greek friend of the horse..

Very interesting video. It clears a lot of things. Anyway, I have these questions in mind. 1. In read in Wikipedia that Philip also became a hostage in Illyria under King Bardylis before held as hostage in Thebes. Why? And what kind of relationship he had with Bardylis? Didi they befriend? It is interesting because in this video it says that later Philip would have a negotiation with him when The Dardanians was about to invade Macedon. 2. If Macedon was poor, how could Philip had all of those money to hire mercenaries and bribed the invading tribes, including made the Tharcian King killed his step brother?
@tylerdurden3722
@tylerdurden3722 3 года назад
By being extremely resourceful...and always one step away from financial ruin. Macedonia was poor even after Alexander became King. The reason Thebes was looted, erased and the Thebans were sold into slavery, was to pay the army, etc (which was in arrears at that point). Macedonia didn't have the funds to invade Persia. As in, the Macedonian treasury was beyond empty. So Alexander put his pride in his pocket and asked the land barons of Macedonia to loan him money. Alexander only had a few months before burning through that money. So he desperately needed a battle against the Persians as soon as possible. Hence why the Battle of Granicus is so desperate. I think, a Greek Mercenary captain, in the service of the Persians, even advised the Persians to just avoid the Macedonian army for a month or two until it runs out of money...and Alexander is consumed by his debts, etc. But the Persians didn't listen.🤷 Alexander managed to force a battle, solve his financial problems for a few more months...and the rest is history. Phillip probably survived in the same way. Living meal to meal... constantly on the verge of financial ruin, but always resourceful enough to evade ruin.

I am sure Phillip learnt a lot of the inter workings of Greek City States’s governments,both democratic and oligarchic, military tactics and their weaknesses, and their diplomatic interactions. All helpful later in defeating and ruling over them. At the fall of the Roman Empire in the 400s AD, Barbarian princes were also held as Roman hostages and learnt the same things, which they used in conquering Rome. However these same barbarians were enlisted in the Roman Army after the Goths annihilated a Roman Army of 50,000 at Adrianople and killed the Western Roman Emperor Valens. They learnt the art of Roman warfare which was helpful when they sacked Rome in 403 AD.

14:25 - Philip tells Athens that Amphipolis is not his, so do Athens then take Amphipolis?
@tylerdurden3722
@tylerdurden3722 3 года назад
No. They try several times, but fail. Phillip would continue to dangle Amphipolis in front of the Athenians like bait😅. Phillip eventually makes a secret agreement with Athens to take the city for them in exchange for Pydna (which was garisoned by Athens). Phillip is successful in taking Amphipolis. But Phillip, who realizes this is an opportunity to alleviate his financial difficulties but, changes his mind, keeps Amphipolis and lays siege to Pydna. Which came with little stain on his honor since the deal with Athens was so discrete. In past years, Athens used Amphipolis to control Thrace for the gold and silver mines in the south (as well as timber and securing grain trade routes from the Scythian Bospherus). So it was very valuable... especially to Athens. It's also why Athens despised Phillip so much. He played them like a fiddle over and over.😅

Yeah you are right, I have seen it used as this quasi legion of homosexual fighters, which is a bit of stretch of the truth.
@X02switchblades

various ancient writers, Plato, Xenophon, Plutarch, Claudius Aelianus, Maximus of Tyre describe this relationship of mentor and student that was not only applied in Thebes but in other states too, making it clear that this eros(love) was not carnal or unethical. This misconception of sexual relations by the modern analysts who have rediscovered the classics is due to the drift of the meaning erastes-eromenos (lover-loved) from the intellectual level to the carnal level. Perhaps a better approximation to avoid confusing the listener would be pairs of mentors and students as this would show the real meaning adjusted to the modern world.
@panosa2502
@panosa2502 6 лет назад
+XplaneZ The word "Eros" (also a name of a God) was one of many uses and had several meanings totally different depending on context. This fact was always known but propagandists of any kind (either out of hatred against Greeks or out of a will to promote homosexuality agendas) jumped on the occasion to distort the facts. We do have a modern equivalent in English language, it is the word "partner". A partner can be a business associate, a workplace colleague, a military/police assistant but it can also be a heterosexual or a homosexual lover. The latter usage of course is only a minority of the overall usage of the word. Imagine now that in 2500 AD the English language evolves with the word partner then being used mostly or only in the sexual relationships case. So by 3000 AD our descendants will be hotly debating whether in 2000 AD USA, Britain, Canada and Australia lawyer offices, police forces and businesses were largely made up by homosexual couples!!!

Isocrates, the Athenian orator and founder of "enslave the barbarians" moto, which he used to say at the Olympics, had a very good opinion for Phillip wanted him to be the unifier and leader of Greeks. Calling for unity almost his entire life, seing Greeks fighting again each other once again, at the battle of Chaeronia, he went at hunger strike as a form of protest and died. I thing at the age of 97 or something. To an Irony, 5-6 yrs later, Persian empire would seest to exist. I am very surprised u know him. He tried and send letters to any ruller he would see fit for the cause. He wrote even at the Tyrrant of Syracuse who at the time was a great man. I think it was Agathocles.

@pand100 6 лет назад
1. Could you specify the anecdotal evidence from other sources that you mentioned? Any links or chapters etc? 2. The historians you sourced seem to have lived few hundreds of years after the formation of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. 3. Could you give me the source of Philip's II lineage? 4. Could you, please, source the phrase about Philip 'pick policies against each other to devastating effect in his favour' (6:33 of the video)? Thank you.
@ArchaiaHistoria
@ArchaiaHistoria 6 лет назад
Ah ok, sure. 1. I couldn't really link you to anything specific aside from the sources in their entirety (you can find those online pretty easily for free) since the information is, well, anecdotal from me reading through parts of them and knowing the knowledge. I guess one example is that the knowledge on Epaminondas and Pelopidas is gathered from Plutarch's Pelopidas and details of Epaminondas' campaigns in Xenophon's Hellenika. Other parts of information are from modern sources analysing ancient sources so I couldn't source that directly (I'm not a professional historian). 2. Well the issue with Philip II is that he lives in this darkspot of information. Most historians were more focused on the end of the Peloponnesian War or Alexander III. So our contemporary information is rather limited. One near-contemporary source is Xenophon but he ended his histories at 360 BCE, just before Philip rose to power. But our main sources are sadly from the Roman Republic/Empire period (Justin, Diodorus, Plutarch, Strabo, etc.) and often its a prologue to talk about Alexander or the Diadochi period. Hence the best sources (as always) are the modern sources that grab and make sense of these loose and varied sources. 3. Well the Argaed dynasty was a well known and prestigious dynasty so their lineage was pretty well known (and linked to Sparta so added street cred). However if you were interested in their mother's lineage that is referred to in Strabo's histories as far as I know. 4. Not sure what you mean... This isn't a quote of any source, just something I wrote in the script. But if you're interested in examples then they could be seen in how he supports and divides the major factions of Thessaly against each other, how he managed to enhance the wedge between the Chalcidian league and Athens so that he could ally the former in the War for Amphipolis (Episode 5), and how he tries to pit Thebes and Athens against each other in the Sacred wars (III and IV). His general diplomatic abilities exceeded that of his military prowess in many ways. He was proud of his powers of deceit and cunning, able to sometimes capture a city without any bloodshed. It was said that he was more proud of his diplomatic ability as in military victory every soldier gets the glory but in deceit the glory is his alone.
@pand100
@pand100 6 лет назад
To make the long story short(er): 1. I asked for specific books/chapters that supported this video and what information was used for each part of the video. Knowing the knowledge does not restrict you from knowing the exact source. I assume a professional historian would do that. 2. I completely disagree. Modern sources should be used up to the level that they do not include subjective interpretation of the scientific ancient history sources, since most of our knowledge comes from them. We are not here to re-write history. For a 'darkspot of information' as you mentioned, the video is too detailed. Herodotus, who lived during the time of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia has described the origin of Philip's ancestors in 'The histories'. 3. Talking about Strabos, he said 'And Macedonia, of course, is a part of Greece' , but this is also not very obvious from the video. 4. A false impression is given that Philip II conquered Greece, although in the 'League of Corinth' they made decisions together with the rest of Greeks (apart from Sparta). Indeed, all Greek regions were fighting each other, including Sparta against Athens, Athens against Thebes, Corinth, Macedonians etc. This does not make them non-Greeks. You talked about the political system of Athens etc, but avoided to mention that the Macedonian language was initially the Ancient Greek (Doric) dialect, which then turned to Attic Greek dialect and later Koine Greek. Nothing about the Greek Olympic games, the religion, the currency, the archaeological evidence and so many other things that would make things clearer to the watchers. Something that a professional historian would have probably done.
@ArchaiaHistoria
@ArchaiaHistoria 6 лет назад
Ok let me preface this with the fact that I am not a professional historian, nor do I claim to be. 1. If you really want to know the main source for more or less this entire series then check out Ian Worthington's "Philip II of Macedon". I don't rely on ancient sources themselves since their is this gap in available contemporary sources on Philip II and near-contemporary sources don't cover him solely but rather as an extension of another person (i.e: Epaminondas, Demosthenes, Alexander, Diadochi, etc.). Hence why modern sources are best for covering Philip II (and admittedly Ian Worthington is the best in his field AFAIK). 2. Of course sources with overt biases should be disregarded but you would be naive to believe that ancient sources weren't just as bad. A lot of ancient sources prefered to tell a pleasing tale (Justin/Appian) or moralise figures (Plutarch) than tell objective truth even if it was undesired or unpleasing to the main audience (Thucydides and somewhat Xenophon). You do mention how detailed the video is, but truly it isn't so detailed if you were a professional historian looking for extensive detail on Philip II's reign. The detail I do have is provided largely from Ian Worthington's books that gather all these loose details and fits them into a historical narrative with conjecture about historian consensuses and commentary. Hence why modern historical sources are so highly valued over straight contemporary sources. Each have pros and cons. 3. I don't know what that quote quiet has to do with my point but if you want the exact line then its Strabo 326c. 4. I don't know what point you're trying to make but your information is wrong. Philip conquered Greece in the way that he defeated both major powers of Greece (Thebes and Athens) then subjugated all the other city states in a puppet league that only he had absolute power in (subverting local government aka autonomy). Although he didn't physically siege down every city a la Alexander with Persia he knocked out all other competition forever. I am not so well versed with the languages used by ancient Macedonia under Philip II but I am pretty sure that Doric was used under his administration and that of Alexander but it is possible that from the diadochi through to the epigoni periods they switched to Attic and Koine Greek. Your other points seem to refer to my controversial Episode 2 on the series. I don't exactly understand what argument you think those evidences "would make clearer to the watchers", if you could elaborate. And finally, don't end arguments with snarky remarks.

The funny thing is that Eastern-Southern Bulgarians instead of using their emotions to feel closer to Greece, they try to use them to feel against Greece, while Greece as a culture is a continuation of Macedonians through the Hellenistic Kingdoms, Rome and Byzantine Empire. Greece is the continuation of Macedonia. And Macedonia spread the Athenian and island ionian culture everywhere. Greeks speak a continuation of Attic Greek because Macedonians (the nobles always and what they wanted to do) wanted Attic Greek as the basis. Whereas the people used doric greek, attic Greek prevailed because Macedonians, mostly dorian tribe, adopted Attic Greek. This slavic people should feel closer to Greece not further away or against, Greece is the continuation of Macedonia hellenistic kingdoms and through it also the Ionian and Athenian cultures. It is fascinating and this slavic people use it in a closed-mind way.

**Ancient Macedonians (i.e. my own parents' forebears) never 'aspired' to (somehow) 'become' Hellenic /Greek --- however 'in-vogue' a cultural 'veneer' it 'd proven (for non-Hellenes) in 'subsequent' eras --- inasmuch as they simply, already KNEW themselves to be as such; ...to wit, ever since bronze-age Dorian times (as 'any & all' linguistic research has EVER evinced; …i.e: w/ even pre-5th cent. inscriptions on record withal)! To wit, Aristotle 's FATHER (Nicomachos) was not only the personal physician to, but more-so a PERSONAL FRIEND of King Amyntas III of Macedon (a quasi-1/2 cent. PRE-King Phillip; 393-369 BC) --- WHEREIN THE ONLY LANGUAGE SPOKEN THRUOUT WAS A COMMON 'HELLENIC' (i.e.: GREEK); ...BE IT DORIAN, AEOLIAN, IONIAN ELSE ACHAEAN IN VERNACULAR --- hence it 's no surprise King Phillip opted for Aristotle --- himself from the vicinity of Macedon (Olynthus) --- to tutor his 1st-born; + it 's not unusual how famous playwright Euripides (also writing SOLELY in 'Hellenic') would unreservedly relocate there (to the then-king 's court IN Macedon) a quasi-cent. Pre-Phillip --- seeing as their 's was an overall patently-reciprocal, if not outright complimentary, heritage (i.e.: THRUOUT ancient Hellas)! Indeed, Demosthenes himself 'd been 'accommodated' (in King Phillip 's court) alongside other Athenian emissaries 'afore LASHING OUT (at the King) once back in Athens; ...exactly the way ANY sharp lawyer denigrates (to put it mildly) his subject in the eyes of a judge (or 'assembly'); i.e.: by casting ambitious aspersions on Macedon 's Hellenicity vis-a-vis that of his Athenian 'overlords' present; ...a 'ploy' he 'd 've likely effected on ANY fellow-Hellenic 'regional' competitor at issue! **His own Athenian peer, Aeschines --- who likewise even branded Demosthenes as a 'barbarian' --- had shown the latter up for having misled then 'lone-wolf' Athens into 'civil' war over (from a modern perspective) 'ostensibly' regional business interests; alongside Thebes! **Howbeit --- and more importantly --- no 'true' Hellene /Greek of (then)-Athens would 've SINCERELY entertained ANY 'elitist' orator 's anti-Phillip, ad-hoc + politically-'posited' notion of any 'non'-Hellenic populace in Macedon!

@@voskreglavincevska3651 I never argued that Slavic and Turkish words have influenced modern European languages Greek included. I said that the ancient Macedonians of the Alexanders era and before him where speaking essentially ancient Greek and that we the modern Greek speakers can understand most of it. Hence we are more likely directly related to them than you who couldn't write until 1200s. All these words you mentioned don't exist in ancient Greek or in other words the language that the Ancient Macedonians used to speak. So I don't know what you want to prove. If this brings you some relief modern Greek have been influenced by Slavic words and Turkish as well. However the root remains the ancient Greek hence we can read the ancient texts like the ones Alexander the great sent from Asia and so on. If you imply that ancient Greek was developed from a prexisting language I can't disagree with you. Everything starts from somewhere. Greek most likely developed from many Indo-European dialects the local tribes where using. Although if you claim that thought them you are related to Alexander the great and the kingdom of ancient Macedonia throught them then you can claim that you are related to the whole world. We are all relatives after all. Everyone in europe would be able to claim being of Ancient macedonian ancestry. Modern day people from Northern Macedonia go one step further, not only do they claim that they are related to Ancient Macedonia despite not having the common language, they also claim that only them are Macedonians and that Ancient Macedonians weren't Greeks. It's quite funny.

All macedonians were eaten by lieons than , and Slavs started their clean Slavic destiny , ha ha ha ha ha Like today we have all aroung many English names and inscriptions , almost we call ourselves people in English Era with Inter Net ! Finaly the Official languages in country Makedonia are Macedonian Albanian and English ! If someone's language ( English ) have achievement to be called international we cannot do anything , like it was Pagan Helenism once upon a time but Greek language is in the bottom ranged today !

@@alexsg870 bla bla bla bla. If ancient Macedonians were so Greek then modern Macedonians would identify themselves as greeks. But reality tells us otherwise. They don't and never have and never will. So you can show ancient quotes and ignore actual history in order to justify your annexation of Macedonia but reality is simple. Macedonia is for the Macedonians

My friend history in Greeks is written in texts from 1800 BC . We don’t need Germans to write Greek history . This is the problem with uneducated countries . They said to the Slavs they are Macedonians and you believe . On the other hand educated countries build libraries where we keep all the history texts inside is free to read from everybody therefore I read and learn . If my country is fault then read all the texts written by historians . It’s easy . Herodotus for example.

Have you ever read a book in your life? or are you stupid like Trump, i here you guys love trump because he makes up shit every day, he has been caught lying over 3,000 times in the last 14 months. The monuments you ass holes have build are starting to fall apart, taken down, airport name will be change soon or it's already change? The end is coming . We know why you are making believe you are Macedonian because the Albanians and Bulgarians will swallow your little country up so you need to make a phony nationality to unify against the Albanians and Bulgarians.

greece was created 1830 by king otto , as you can see the word greece does not exist in ancient times . the turks gave the greeks their name grakoie or greek . GREEKS TAKE NOTE .

baits First of all its Greece, not grease. And Greece gained its independence in 1830, not 1930, and wasnt king Otto who did it, but the Greek Revolution itself. Also, ancient greeks, didnt call themselves as "Greece". They were many Greek city-states that Philip II united into one empire which is a Greek empire actually. If its called Macedonian thats still the same. Its like saying " Spartans are not Greeks because they were called Spartans".. Macedonians also participated in the Olympic games, where only Greeks could do that. Also, what Alexander said himself when he sent spoils of war in Athens: “Alexander, son of Phillip and the Greeks, the Lacedaemonians (Spartans) excepted, these spoils from the barbarians who dwell in Asia.”

never a king of greece called alexander . the word greece didn't exist when alexander was alive , good try , but stealing macedonian history as your own is taking it a little to far . 338 bc macedonian army smashed through to athens killing thousands and enslaving the rest . the word knows the macedonian army at the time .no such thing as greek then . ask the hunza of pakistan who say they have macedonian blood and some have blue eyes and look like fair macedonians not modern greeks, see for yourself on youtube .

baits Lol let me explain. The translation of the word "Greek" in the Greek language is "Έλληνας" (Hellenas) and thats the word that Alexander used in his speech. Of course if you translate the word Ελληνας in English, its "Greek". And Alexander didnt conquer greece ( Ελλάς-Hellas). He conquered the city-states. If you know , almost all the greek city states were fighting each other for hundreds of years, especially Athens against Sparta. So again, your point is invalid. Alexander the Great was not your ancestor. Get that out of your stupid heads. You are Slavs.
