How did Brahms go about composing music? Let's explore part of the opening section of the Intermezzo op118 no2 by Brahms as we try to answer that very question. We explain how Brahms handles the repetition of the opening phrase, which occurs four times, and explores what is repeated and what is modified, melodically, harmonically, and rhythmically. The internal structure of the phrase is broken down so you can grasp how a three note motif is used as two short fragments followed by a more connected second half of the phrase. Intervallic tension and use of texture help you to engage further with the Brahms style as we consider what makes this such a beautifully expressive piece. Useful for anyone wanting to grasp key aspects of the Brahms style or who wants to develop ability in analysis. Also useful for composers wanting to write in an expressive Romantic style.
