I was a paperboy in Mt. Shasta (8th grade) when this happened. Dunsmuir got our toilet water. If they have the greatest water, what does that say about Mt. Shasta toilet water? The joke was “Flush twice because Dunsmuir needs the water.” 😂 2:44

And since the people of Mt. Shasta are so full of it, that's a lot of sewage!

As a boy I lived in Dunsmuir then Mt. Shasta City and I remember drinking some of that nasty tasting spring water that’s next to the river underneath one of the I-5 bridges, tastes like rusty water, why someone thinks that’s the best water can have it. Yes, I remember the little water spot in downtown Dunsmuir that had the water fountain but I didn’t notice anything special, lol. But I did enjoy living in Mt. Shasta City, we lived by the CHP station and it was like heaven to me, dad worked for SP so we later moved to Klamath Falls, OR which was nice but not as great as Mt. Shasta.

You dont remember all the sprinkler barges at the river mouth to the lake attempted to aerate the water? The town basically perished and the river was dead for years

No one was hurt at the spill site. However, there was lots of ill effects on people during the next few days. A large financial settlement was paid out.

People died as a result of that spill . The fumes went up and down the river.

What were the investigation details? Which agencies, report numbers, authors etc?

Cliff notes version: “Tanker car is spilling a liquid.” Manufacturer: “It’s inert until activated. You’re good.” Couple days later… People: “If this stuff is inert why are all the fish and plants dying?” Manufacturer: “Wait…what? It activates it water! How did it come in contact with water?” People: “The tanker car fell into the river.” Manufacturer: “You could have told us this!” People: “You could have asked or told us how it activated.” Manufacturer: “You didn’t ask!!!!” End result: forced aeration to destroy what they could as it went into Shasta Lake, but it’s also more dense than water so who knows how much is left at the bottom of the lake.

That must have been sickening additionally because anyone on the entire train could see it occurring as it was occurring.

The video is extremely revving an wished it had covered more areas Like total cost on clean up' did the train company Pay' or insurance company Pay for this horrific Spil I'm saying it would've been interesting to of known these Details.

Milton, I was born and raised in Dunsmuir. I woke to the river looking like antifreeze and dead fish everywhere. The Sherriff told everyone to get to higher ground which is Mt, Shasta. The hospital was overcome with people having trouble breathing including myself I have asthma now because of the spill. Pacific Railroad quickly offered $750 to everyone. Some people took the money. Others settled years later... Sad thing is it's happened again. The train derailed 2021.

@@JMCyoungblood When there was a siding (two tracks) at Small, there was a derailment at least once a year. I remember 1 derailment dumped a car of barley seed and it sprouted, the caddis larvae ate like kings....lol

Can captions be made for this video as it's very hard to hear the conversations over the train noise and background music

The reason this happened is because the railroad management used fewer pusher engines to chug the load up the curved grade. Instead of adequate power, the crew was forced to just take a running start and fly up the hill. This happened because of a cost-cutting measure and no other reason

@Kye7967: what are the source materials supporting your statement? Not a challenge, I’m just trying to establish a factual narrative.

It didn't hurt the fishing, because the fishing was always poor. Unless your idea of catching fish is waiting under a bridge for the fish hatchery truck to toss them into the river and immediately catch them. Shasta Dam ruined the fishing decades earlier in the Sacramento River. Prior to the dam, the fishing was great, and the trout were natives, huge and plentiful. But when the dam was built, all the scavenger fish - suckers - from the other rivers that poured into the dam, like the Pitt River, were able to migrate from the dam on up into the Sacto and prey on the eggs and the fish. My grandfather lived there, he worked for the railroad during WWII, and he was an avid trout fisherman. He witnessed the destruction of the fishing that the dam caused. The real eco damage going on are the hippies who live in the area and are dumping their raw sewage into the creeks that feed into the river. You know, the tree-hugging hypocrites. In addition to that, the chemicals they're using to grow their marijuana are probably making their way into the river too. The new owners of Cave Springs are telling their YT viewers that Dunsmuir has world class fishing. LOL, I used to vacation there every year from 1967 to 1993, it was never world class fishing. Prior to the Shasta Dam it was, but after that, no way. What you will see, since the train derailed, along the riverbanks is evidence of witchcraft being performed and other forms of satanic activity. If it was truly world class fishing, Dunsmuir would be a thriving community.

You’re quite right sir. I lived in Dunsmuir as a boy in the early to mid 70’s and fishing was useless unless you went near the Castle Crags and fished a creek over there but it wasn’t much better. I enjoyed roaming around as a boy and I’m thankful for having been able to experience life there. After a while we moved to Mt. Shasta City and lived not far from the fish hatchery and as you know, they raised rainbow trout there which was decent enough. I wonder how different the river was before the dam.

@@echohunter4199 Thanks for your comment. I loved vacationing there, in spite of never really catching any fish, but I still tried. I would go there every year during the last two weeks of June. It was perfect weather, plus more daylight to really get my money's worth. I loved it because where I went fishing, I was all alone and got so caught up of being in the moment among that rugged and majestic beauty. I would forget the stress of the city and job I was vacationing from. My first visit was with my parents. I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was south of Dunsmuir a few miles. I can't remember the exit it was off of. But the hotel had a separate cabin, and that's where we stayed, sometime after that it mysteriously burned down, except for the cabin. The next several years after, we camped at Railroad Park, it was beautiful and inexpensive, and I enjoyed the little creek. One year I remember they had fixed up some train cars down below the campground and converted them into like a snack bar. It appeared to be the place for all the local teens to hang out, swim in the pond and hear the sixties hit music over the PA system. (Pretty cool!) Later on, I always stayed at the Bavarian, until the new owner in the early nineties took it over and let it go to pot. My parents and aunt would stay at Louie's Cave Springs. I think the soul of Cave Springs is being sucked out by the new owners and their plans. Louie and his wife Belinda were great people, and the vibe was always good. I would enjoy hearing your stories of growing up there. It's where my dad and my aunt grew up. Oh yeah, I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but I believe it opened after the spill, it was located in the heart of Dunsmuir, and it was only open for breakfast and dinner and the food was AWESOME! Do you remember the name of it?

These companies must be fined hundreds of millions in order for them to make things more secure and safe! The amounts they get fined they make it back in another load or by firing employees or cutting back time on employees. They must be fined enough to make an impact in their numbers the first time !
