That episode, along with a few other cartoons that did the overweight/exercise to lose weight message the wrong way, messed me up as a kid too. Cause I was larger than Arthur appeared to be so that had me convinced I was obese. I was forcing myself to throw up after each meal because I was so desperate to lose weight.

I hated that dw got in trouble for it. She didn't know it was a bad word. I think berenstain bears handled this a bit better. They used the word fur ball as a swear. Than had sister later learn it was a bad word that hurts people's feelings. She wasn't in trouble but did get talked to.

The problem is that there is no good explanation for why normal curse words are bad outside of "because I said so". The whole "they mean I want to hurt your feelings" explanation falls flat for so many reasons. The word f-ck by itself just means having sex. Now someone can say that someone is a f-ing idiot, but they can also say someone is f-ing awesome. Both use the same curse word, but one is an insult and the other is a compliment. There's also swearing when you get hurt or something like that, which is usually directed at no one. (Note: RU-vid made me censor this comment even though I wasn't insulting anyone.)

I think the best part about that story is that it implies that yes, Nickelodeon held onto the uncensored audio recording for archival purposes, and no, it'll likely never see the light of day 😂

What about the later scene of all the kids cursing? Maybe they were allowed to do that as an indication that the kids were immature or something.

It’s rare that Arthur being the show it is has characters who are just genuine assholes if the chance presents itself. This tailor did as much damage to Arthur than his own weight and health habits did. I also think of the landlord of Francine’s apartment in Feeling Flush, he was a massive asshole berating Francine for things she can’t help and refusing to consider changes she suggests out of spite.

It’s a little TOO realistic; everyone will judge/moralize your eating and scrutinize you at all times (and feeling entitled to “help”), the “formerly fat” person being super fatphobic… D+ for at least dissing diets, I guess. But the whole premise being that everyone in Arthur’s life suddenly becomes hyper focused on and involved in his “health” is really shitty (albeit, sadly, realistic). It’s never easy dealing with this stuff, but 2005-ish (when this came out) was around the “Supersize Me”-reactionary era, and I feel so bad for any kids watching this that ended up feeling like shit about themselves.

I don't want to be rude, but what's wrong with dieting? I know there are a lot of terrible fad diets and a whole diet industry dedicated to keeping people running in circles and wasting their hard earned money, but isn't healthy eating and mitigating portion sizes still generally good? Also, I forgot how influential Supersize Me was. I knew for years it was a manipulatively edited piece of trash, but I often forget how important people thought it was.

considering this show is mostly for western audiences, nah that ain't it chief, there is no reason to have a lil extra pudge and if you do it quickly can spiral out of control with the garbage food that is sold here. I think it would have been better if they drew him heavier so it doesn't come across as like "model fat" but yeah no, no one here kids or adults need to be told it's okay to be fat cause that's how we've ended up in the place we're at with obesity rates. how about we demand the government to stop approving these horribly fattening foods, such as bread that would be considered cake in most parts of the world instead of accepting being fat?

It depends on the body type. And fatness can be genetic, meaning dieting doesn't touch it. I'm 5'4" and 120 pounds. That is SKINNY. But I'm having trouble with belly fat as I get older and it's changing how I eat, but I'm not eating enough. I'm predisposed to addiction and an eating disorder isn't off the table. That's scary to me. And it's also scary that someone out there thinks my "little bit of fat" is not okay. That I'm on a bad path. Now if you feel like backpedaling to say that that's not the kind of "fat" you meant, then you have a very specific body type in mind and actually believe that fatness is a spectrum. It's a good start but you need to understand how eating disorders hurt people and how the way someone eats doesn't always help or hurt someone's ideal physique. People have to resort to invasive surgeries to get rid of weight which is not what anyone should have to go through. And people who lose tons of weight at once can always gain it back. Like I said, a lot of the time it's genetic. I've seen too many fat people who don't eat enough and still get ridiculed. Additionally, when I was in high school, I was severely underweight. But someone like you would have praised me for it. At that point it's not even about health anymore. You don't care about someone's health. You care about strangers being conventionally attractive to you, whether they're healthy or not. TLDR; educate yourself on fatness. And on that "o" word you used to refer to fat people. It's 2023.

To be fair, that's an accurate representation of kids learning a new word, especially one that has an unusual effect on adults around them. The reactions would indeed be a) immediately finding the word fun to say, b) desperate curiosity about the word or c) downright fear of adults ever learning the word escaped their mouths due to some unclear yet terrifying imaginary consequences.

Tiny Toon Adventures literally did this first before anyone else did, with a character that was actually called "Foulmouth". Though he only actually swore in his first appearance. They replaced it with G-rated replacements in all future episodes. But in Foulmouth's first appearance, the lesson was that Foulmouth says so many bleeped out swear words that it upset everyone else and made them sick.

I feel like SpongeBob "Sailor Mouth" is probably the most popular kids show episode about swearing not only because of it being SpongeBob because that cartoon alone is more famous than the other ones but the funniest and the most talked about. Sure, Dexter's Lab "Rude Removal" has its fans

I know this a bit of a leap in terms of severity, but it kinda makes me think of parents who raise their kids off of fear, not doing certain things just because they know that if they do, they'll be punished for it, regardless of why that is, being raised not to question why things are the way they are, but still doing so because...well, that's human nature- This is how you create trust issues, just have a bit of faith in your kid's ability to understand basic concepts!

Funny enough, it also makes me think of a movie that I think...Drew Gooden had in a video, maybe? And all throughout it, this girl was trying to figure out geometry or something, and was failing her math class because of it, but when faced with this, pretty much all the adults in her life (including her tutor) were just like "how do you not understand? It's so simple!", refused to elaborate, and are surprised when she continued to get bad grades!

Pretty sure it’s not fuck, but the other F-word. That’s the only two-syllable word I can think of that would cause that reaction and kinda matches up with the mouth movements.

It could be the F word which is a slur towards gay people, it would certainly cause that kind of reaction.

I always thought he was saying "fuck you" because of the context of the scene myself.

I got curious and looked it up one day and one of the theories I thought worked was the B word. But now I think the f-slur is probably more likely. Neither word really fits in some of the later scenes, but honestly I feel like they didn't intend for the word to be a real swear at all, but rather a stand-in for _all_ swear words.
