I'm an old programmer. A few tips: (1) Learn to touch type. (2) Learn an editor well enough to use without a mouse or looking away from the text. (3) Prefer top-down over bottom-up (there are exceptions). Getting something sort-of-working with stubs right-away will help with both motivation and understanding. (4) Explain the problem to someone, even if the someone is imaginary: I can't count the number of times I've explained something to someone who has no idea what I'm talking about, when I suddenly "see the light". #1 and #2 take a lot of effort and don't directly touch on programming, but it helps *so* much not having to take your eyes off the screen and your mind off the task to hunt-and-peck or switch between keyboard and mouse. Programming is hard enough without the task switching.

I think the number one reason mental health is getting worse is probably moreso dye to the insane increase in poverty, the ability to see the atrocities going on in the world 24/7, or the fact that most people are aware the world is gonna become uninhabitable within their lifetime.

The only problem with treating every day with the same scrutiny as April Fool's day is that it get exhausting because there is absolute no punishment for those that perpetuate bad information, intentional or otherwise. So I get why some people just give up or tune it out and stick to their safe spaces. Sometimes it's not fun seeing and then pointing out that the emperor is wearing no clothes. Perception might be the second biggest cause of depression, the biggest cause is the world is objectively getting shitty and everyone in a position of power insists on keeping it that way. I think this is true to an extent, but for programmer burnout I think there is a level to which you should be dissatisfied, just not in a depressive way. Programmers (and workers in general) are VERY exploited right now compared to previous decades. So while you shouldn’t let it demoralize you, you also shouldn’t convince yourself it’s all okay, because you have a personal right to self-advocate against poor treatment.

Suffering from Depression is like being in the sea at a beach: Depression is the sea you are floating in. When it hits you, is the same as being hit by a wave. You can deal with it in 2 ways. 1. Either you go with it and let yourself get dragged by the wave. 2. Or you submerge your head and let the wave pass over you, barely moving you from your spot. Both have their risks, but the one that works for me is the 2nd one.
