How Do Different Tobaccos Taste, From Country to Country? - Cigar 101

It is interesting to know what kind of individual flavor profiles each tobacco has, country by country. Sometimes it’s enough to say, “Dominican Cigars” or “Nicaraguan cigars” - and that will give a person an idea of how the cigar tastes, based on what that person already knows generally about Dominican or Nicaraguan tobacco. It’s all shorthand; and while the tobacco’s country of origin helps describe the flavors you’d expect to find in the cigar (with some exceptions), the differences can be surprising - even with leaf from countries that are next door neighbors. See what I mean, in this short video…

How good was that?!! Perfect! I wouldn’t mind it if you did a longer version but I’m not sure that it’s necessary given how clear and concise you were. 😀

I didn’t know the first part is the country where it was grown and second part is the country the source of the seed that was used. Pretty cool.

What species of tobacco is generally used for the filler leaves? For instance, a Nicaraguan puro that uses corojo as a wrapper, but the binder, and filler is non specidied on the company website, or box, and simply says 'Nicaraguan'. Do they leave out what type of filler (and sometimes binder) is used, to retain the intehrity of the blend? Some companies will tell you the primings used in the filler, but that's as far as ive ever seen it go.

Thanks for the information. Very helpful for beginners like me. I've been smoking for about 3 months and so far I seem to be attracted to smooth, creamy mild-medium tobacco. Had a few that were to strong for my taste buds and they tend to be maduro. Generally why i stay away from them (Maduro) but if u have a recommendation for me I would greatly appreciate it. thanks again.

Still enjoying cigars? If so how has your pallet developed? Still preferring smooth and creamy?

In our experience, Cuban tobacco has a more floral/baking spice character. Some cigars have a spicy profile, Partagas/Ramon Allones, but nothing like the Ligero spice bombs from Nicaragua. Some cigars like the Por Larranaga line have a caramel-type of flavor where a Punch has a sour/sweet profile. We hope that helps.
