Calvinism teaches that salvation is By God’s Grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, and that we cannot come to God on our own without him drawing us to himself because we are totally depraved. It also teaches that those who God draws to himself will persevere to the end because they are kept by his grace. Nobody decides to become a Christian without the Holy Spirit drawing them and nobody can endure to the end without the Holy Spirit guiding them. There’s nothing unbiblical about that. God gets all of the glory, not us. The alternative to this is that we decide to go to God on our own because we have some good in us and we keep ourselves in a right standing with God by obeying him. That’s salvation by work and it’s unbiblical.

A man who only has a few months to live came to our church in January 2023. He never been to a church and never knew Jesus. But he accepted Christ that month and got water baptized a few weeks after. He volunteered at the church because he found where God is working. He focused on Jesus like Jesus is all that he has left. He died a month later. I wish I have a mindset that I have a few weeks to live so I can focus on what really matters - Jesus.

He was a wise man. If you want to "focus on what really matters" you need to spend time with Jesus every morning in reading your Bible and praying for others. It does not have too be a long time, just so it becomes a regular habit. Also, memorising Bible verses will help.🙂

Thank you for your video on this. You just started showing up on my RU-vid feed for whatever reason. Your video was timely in my life, even though it was uploaded two months ago. I am constantly struggling with this despite knowing what the scriptures state. I think this is because I have years worth of church teaching that I need to remove from my brain. Your RU-vid video put it in perspective for me and does not contradict the scriptures, nor does it add or take away. May you be blessed in all that you do in sharing God with the world via RU-vid.

That's a very common Lutheran explanation! One of the concepts that really woke me up was the idea of the pendulum either swinging toward pride (my good works) or despair (messing up again) that Gene Veith talks about in The Spirituality of the Cross. In either case, we've taken Christ out of the mix. Sadly, many of us don't even realize we're living our Christian lives that way.

Yes! Good words. Christ for us! There is much comfort and assurance in this. I know I'm getting into the weeds here. But I wish you would have addressed unconditional election. Don't Lutherans believe that God chooses only some to salvation? So it seems to me that the more urgent question would be, "How do I know I'm among the elect?" Maybe I'm mistaken. But my understanding is that Lutheranism teaches that all people are objectively justified through Christ's death and resurrection, and that God desires all to be saved. Yet, he elects only some. So, how should we deal with this... paradox? contradiction? Is it sufficient to remind ourselves that we are baptized? I'd love to see a video on this. Really like your stuff. Thanks!

It is true that when I look for deliverance from my sin (including the wrath of God and not being a slave to it), I can only look to Christ, as Paul conclude in Romans 7. However I do not see it as evidence that I have in fact been saved. To be saved I need to know God (or be known by God), have a desire in my heart to follow his commands and see the fruits of this by not being in habitual, deliberate sin. This is made clear for me in 1 John.

[4] For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you. [5] Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?-unless indeed you are disqualified. A covenant is an agreement that either party can break. God has said that He will not break it…but he warns us over and over in scripture not to break it either. Salvation does require a response from us. “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” (Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭21‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

Calvinists do not , do not look inside themselves for assurance of Salvation. They look to Jesus, just like you do. Calvinists believe exactly what the Bible says. In the words of Jesus. “ He ( Jesus) went on to say, This is why I told you no one can come to me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise them up on the last day.” John 6:44 That my Lutheran friend includes you and it includes me. The crassness of the attitude displayed toward believers outside the Lutheran and Catholic church’s is shocking. When any group is coached to believe their approach to a relationship with Jesus Christ is the only true and pure belief system, it demonstrates their prejudice. You are inferring that Christians all over the world are not going to heaven because they do not meet your criteria. Did you feel the Father drawing you to Jesus? Did you respond with a grateful, “ Yes!” ?

@@sharondoan1447as for the calvinist church I left they believe in salvation by election not salvation by faith. @@user-jj4iz4nq2h It was very kind of you to explain your background. I grew up in the Southern Baptist Convention. Within the Convention each church is independent which opens the door to differences in teaching. I was not taught the theology you describe. It’s rather interesting to me how intent Lutherans are on spreading the idea that all Baptists adhere to the beliefs of John Calvin the way they do to the teachings of Martin Luther. Never even heard the name John Calvin until I was an adult studying the great apologists of the Reformation. What’s also interesting, in my personal experience, is how infrequently Lutherans expound on the differences between” good, baptized Catholics who have been well organized enough to have confessed their sins within moments of death, and their own theology of salvation through the act of baptism. “ Baptism saves” is a frequent quote.

@@user-jj4iz4nq2h I probably made a mistaken assumption. There is a widespread pulling away from organized Christian worship and church membership. I sometimes become so disappointed in the ongoing contest about which denomination is the “ true” church. I love studying the Bible, theology in general, Bible commentaries, and discussions about why one believes what they believe. With many Christians it is a many generational tradition to believe as taught by the previous generations. Perfectly understandable. I also follow a variety of Pastors, Priests, Preachers, as well as laymen . I want to be informed .

The problem with this, however, is that the Apostle Paul commands us to examine “YOURSELVES” whether you are in the faith (2 Cor. 13:5). Almost the entire book of 1 John is about testing yourself to see whether or not you really are in the faith. And even Jesus tells us in Matt. 7 that there are people who think they know Jesus and do religious things in His name, but are in fact deceived. There has to be some focus on ourselves to see whether or not we have deceived ourselves into thinking we are saved when we are not.

There is a definite deep knowledge that we are saved because the Spirit of the Father communicates to our spirit that we belong to Him, there is no guess work. If someone has not had this assurance, just wait and continue in the faith, it will come to you because it is a promise from the Almighty, if we continue in the faith. It is NOT up to us to say when this happens; the Almighty prepares us for that moment, and it may take years before that moment comes. Personally, I experience without a doubt the presence of the Spirit of the Almighty in me, so I know this is true and happens, it is not a guess work. So, expect the Spirit of the Almighty to let you know you have been connected to the Father, do not give up, never, it will happen, it is a promise.

So basically your telling people not to look at themselves to repent. Just believe in the finished work of Christ, even though Jesus said that we should pray to the Father and ask for the forgiveness of our sins and ask for daily bread. Do you not ask for forgiveness on a daily basis like eating? None are righteous, no not one. Our spirit is willing but our flesh is weak. Put off the old and put on the new. Renew the mind. Bear good fruit or we will be cut down and thrown into the fire. To know the right thing to do and not do it is sin. Everyone sins but everyone will not repent. The Kingdom of Heaven is here, be quick to repent.

Friend, about 99% of the time, when someone says, "So basically you're telling people..." the next words they write or speak will be a distortion of what the person actually communicated. It is, quite frankly, dishonest, not to mention unkind and uncharitable. Practice fairness in communication. If you wish to summarize someone's point, ask yourself, "I am portraying them accurately? Or I am twisting or weakening their words for my own rhetorical goals?" That goes a long way toward establishing communication. Do better. I know you can. Peace to you.

@@Shebathebigcat That's interesting. You don't believe, yet you feel the need to repent according to your own definition. That's the Holy Spirit bringing conviction. No one is perfect. I have recently seen two supervisors removed from my work area but I prayed for God to intervene and make them stop or be removed. May God's will be done in the name of His Son Jesus our Lord and Christ, amen. Paul never said, Just believe. In fact, he said to believe in your heart And Confess. I know people say going to heaven as a matter of speech, but christians should be more accurate as to what they say. We do not go to heaven, nobody goes to heaven, we die and the next thing is the resurrection which will happen at the coming of our Lord Jesus. Actually heaven comes down to earth, the kingdom of Jesus, his kingdom over the house of Jacob will happen at his coming, and Jesus will also be the sovereign of the whole earth as we can read in Daniel chapter 2 and the stone that destroys all the human governments to be replaced by the government of the Almighty in the person or Jesus the Messiah.
