This doctor knows his stuff. He mentioned all the different symptoms and their duration exactly. Makes living with severe pain and weakness in my hands for so many years seem pointless. Thank you for sharing.
@@tinoheat728 Doctors are shit at their job when it involves diagnosing chronic pain, you get shuffled around to different doctors sometimes even making it worse. Hilariously depressing when you realize years of chronic pain could've been solved/diagnosed relatively.
@@geroldgerold7319 1 million percent correct. Exhaust all testing, drugs, therapy, and long lobby wait times. After weeks of therapy I realized I was on a generic plan and there was no focus on if it would help. In fact, they stopped asking if there is any improvement and kept to their scripted routine as if I put a coin in their machine. I have a pile of wrist braces and conflicting opinions from different drs to wear or not wear them. No ultrasound though so wondering why they have scheduled a nerve conduction test vs an ultrasound. Probably how I found this video…
I have suffered from Carpal Tunnel in both of my hands for years and nothing has even come close to giving me the kind of relieve that this taping method has. Within seconds, I could feel the tingling and numbness going away and I could feel my fingers again. I work from home by doing many different types of customized projects for individuals, and my hands are a MUST have. Thank you so much for sharing this method, it has given me back the ability to do what I love.
Wow, I wished my release in both hands in 1995, was with that device shown in this video, on the dummy hand. My surgeries were 10 days apart. Then I was in a tornado shortly after my second hand was done. The screen door of our home slammed hard on my one hand. Both hands were bandaged. I’m just glad both hands healed well, and I didn’t hurt my hand bad from the door. I was off work for 5 months. Went through physical therapy. Hands are great now. ❣️
I had standard surgery about 30 years ago. Mine was so bad, it was radiating pain all the up to the shoulder. For me it fixed it for good, never had any problems after that.
Because of COVID my GP diagnosed me with carpal tunnel syndrome without examination. I recall mine starting with an incredibly painful thumb, pins an needles and often a burning sensation in the affected hand. You're explaining it in more detail and I know how to handle it until my hospital appointment comes through. Thank you 😊
No way! I was diagnosed with covid three weeks ago and I noticed weakness in my hands, numbness and freaked out but I noticed it happened once I got covid.. Its so relieving to hear this
Thanks for this video. I wish I had you as a doctor. I'm dealing with nerve damage in both hands due to playing music which has gone on for roughly a year now. It's seriously had a negative impact on pretty much my overall quality of life and has basically halted my training with becoming a music teacher. On top of this, I cannot begin to explain what it's done to my mental health. And yet despite all this, my doctors are refusing to go ahead with treatment. All I get from them is "try some painkillers.". This video alone has explained to me what my options are far better than the doctor I went to just recently for help. Really, thanks a lot. I will have to fight very hard for treatment to get my life back on track and this video gives me some hope.
@@gracefitzgerald2227 Thank you very much, Grace! I saw a very kind and understanding doctor not long ago and she has referred me to see a nerve specialist so hopefully all will be well some time soon. Your well wishes are absolutely appreciated, always good to see there are people out there who will go out of their way to show some kindness to complete strangers. Hope all is grand with you :)
@@brendanm6921 Your story captured my attention because your symptoms were tragically interfering with your passion. I’m so happy you responded and that you are making decisions that will improve your health both physically and mentally. Best wishes to you Brendan.
I too had a nerve conduction study done years ago. They insisted I do the wrist surgery - I punted. Since then I was in an accident and the imaging showed damaged discs. Even prior to the accident I experienced a shrill sound that eliminated hearing for about a minute, I also experienced blurred vision and interruption to my sight, I could hear my neck bones grinding, numbness in my arms and into my hands, and sharp pains in my elbows, not to mention dropping things, lack of ability to grasp or write, I also had gut issues. I opted to do neck surgery which entailed removing discs and replacing those with cadaver bones, plates, and screws. I know it sounds horrific, however I had a wonder smart surgeon and I woke up feeling terrific. My previous problems and issues were gone! Everything has been good for a few years. I picked up something way to heavy and I felt it immediately in my neck so now I'm having all the same symptoms again. Hence Dr Chappell's recommendation to have your neck checked out is a smart idea. Get a second opinion is always intelligent. My so-called carpal tunnel symptoms were stemming from my long time neck issues, that effected so many other body parts.
I had this and doctors palmed me off with circulationproblems or repetitive strain ,finally saw a chiropractorthat diagnosed carpal tunnel, the operations i had on both wrists changed my life after years of suffering, was done under a local anaesthetic and recovery was 6weeks ,i recommend this surgery👍🤲
Thanks so much for your awesome comment and advice ! It’s very helpful ! I will have a surgery next week. Your video giving me the confidential information ! Have a good day, good health and happiness ! 🙏🤙
That was a remarkably succinct presentation of the etiology and presentation. The micro invasive procedure looks simply amazing. My only concern that wasn’t addressed is long term outcomes with a dissected carpal tunnel ligament. Five star video. Well done.
_"My only concern that wasn’t addressed is long term outcomes with a dissected carpal tunnel ligament"_ - Did you find this out yet? It's what I'm also wondering. Thanks.
I've never been diagnosed with carpal tunnel, but I started having symptoms in high school, and a friend of mine that had the same complaints was diagnosed with it. At this point, I've made all these changes to prevent any discomfort I only notice it after spending a day without my little mouse and keyboard cushions, or my paper tablet that doesn't allow me to write with as much pressure as I use on paper. I switched from crochet to knitting, and keep a wrist wrap and a self-massage video in my favorites for when I actually forget and go a bit too hard. That said, I come from a medical family. Ignoring pain and self-diagnosis is an unintended side-effect so, for your own benefit, do as I say not as I do. If you can go in to see a doctor and make sure what you think you have is what you actually have, please do. If you can work out what's wrong with you early on, incorporating preventative measures becomes second nature and you can minimize your symptoms and not exacerbate the problem. Again, I am most definitely not the best advocate for this, since I do not have an actual diagnosis, but my point is you can keep things from escalating with preventative care as I've been doing for a decade now.
I am just 39 years and I started developing carpel tunnel syndrome, I have using computers all my life, both of my hands finger tips are somewhat tingling and a little bit numbed, I never knew carpel tunnel was a very common thing!
I had an EMG performed 5 years ago, showing some carpal tunnel and Orbital tunnel issues. For the past 5 years my pinky and half of ring finger have been numb non-stop and now below those two fingers my hand is exhibiting numbness. I've noticed the muscle between my index and thumb has atrophied considerably this past year and I've lost quite a lot of pinching strength(thumb and index). I'm seeing a doctor in 2 weeks to discuss options, possibly another EMG....but after watching your video maybe that's not the correct line of defense. Thanks for your informative video.
I had the same issue. I was diagnosed with dorsal ulnar cutaneous nerve damage. Right after I had my cortisone injection for carpal tunnel, I could feel the pain in my pinky and ring finger way more because the carpal tunnel nerve had been relieved. So speak to a doc about that and see if that may be your issue.
@Bobbie I had surgery due to a reputured ligament to my wrist. Doctor thinks I've developed CT getting my nerve test march 16th. Doctor gave me a shit of cortisone to the middle of my palm for a trigger finger..but now my ring and pinky are in pain.
I’ve been diagnosed w carpal tunnel 24years ago and was told to have surgery then and I couldn’t afford it nor could lose time off I use to sand, install, and refinish hardwood flooring having to use heavy vibrating machinery not to mention every aspect of it is using hand and arms relentlessly. I also was a golfer played all through high school and college but my golfing days were gone long ago because the pain was debilitating even now at thanksgiving having to cut up several vegetables will have me in terrible night pain and will take half a day for numbness to be tolerable gone are the days of shaking the numbness out. I wake up in searing pain all the way up to my shoulders it can be so severe I’ll be in tears and so I’ve lost so many things I’ve enjoyed and when I try them again I pay dearly. I still have no funds and zero insurance I have the time to take off even though I see how much better the surgery recovery is now even typing this message I’m having to stop and straighten my arms to get some of the numbness to subside. Please hear me when I say when a doctor tells you that you must have surgery PLEASE do it right then because there is nothing but pain, misery, and loss to come. This was a great video it puts my mind at ease and using ultrasound instead of that painful test is amazing because that test when I had it all that time ago was no fun and agitated my symptoms at the time.
I have arthritis at the base of my right thumb and signs of carpal tunnel on the on the same hand. I'm waking out of my sleep from numb pain in my fingers, and 5 by e more I try to shake my hand to wake up the more it hurts. Writing and doing my makeup I constantly have to stop and shake my hand of being numb. Waiting to get the EMG done this week
I had an EMG almost 20yrs ago. I was diagnosed with the Carpel tunnel, nothing worse than the pain waking you up. It's unbearable. Mine flares when I'm dehydrated and I still get instant relief from my wrist splints. I know the exact angle my wrist and hand need to be in at this point that I barely wear them. Sometimes I even just use tape, which I keep in my nightstand. Lol
@@roserosyland3090 I stopped working after having my 3rd child, so thankfully physical therapy has continued to be enough. I only have to do my stretches in the morning to wake my hands up. If I had continued working, I most definitely would have needed surgery by now.
This is one of the best descriptions which I am glad I watched. Also, my regular orthopedist doesn't do the endoscopic method. He opens from the top. I had a friend that showed me her scar and I said no to that. I am a plumber and didn't want all of that tissue cut hence a longer healing procedure. So like I did, you have the option to find the right orthopedist. From the time I left surgery until full healing which was within two weeks, I had zero pain when the pain medicine he injected before sewing up wore off. I was actually not thinking the next day and lifted a heavy about 10 pound soup pot to start a pot full of water and beans without even thinking about it. This was with my wrist wrapped up, I forgot and lifted that pot no problem. So don't worry or stress. They put me completely under with an anesthesiologist. Today you cannot even see the scar on my wrist. He slit perfectly in the wrist crease.
I suspect I have Carpal Tunnel syndrome. However, I also have osteoarthritis in finger joints and base of thumbs and probably wrist (from abuse of vibrating machinery in college days). When I accidently knock something over, it is typically because I failed to move a finger out of the way (say handle on a tea cup) but more recently I have had tingling in fingers also hand and arm go to sleep. This happens in bed or while driving. In addition I have a fairly stiff neck. So already I can see three sources of symptoms 1) osteoarthritis in hands, 2) neck stiffness (nerve impingement?) issues or 3) Carpal Tunnel. I play cornet/trombone in a band and I am teaching myself saxophone; but, because of an unrelated piece of surgery I am giving it a rest for a few weeks, so I thought I'll give my Tin Whistle an outing only to find I can barely feel the holes with the pads of my fingers - essential to sensitively cover holes effectively to play. Suddenly I have to do something about diagnosis and therapy. Where do I start?
Brendan, if you are located near Utah, we would recommend scheduling an appointment here as it sounds like you have multiple things going on that need to be addressed and we could evaluate all of them and most likely treat all of them. If Utah is out of reach for you and your first concern is the carpal tunnel (which based on the numbness, I would say it needs to be addressed asap). You can check this website sonexhealth.com/patients/find-a-physician/ to find a physician near you that performs the same type of release that Dr. Chappell does. Best of luck to you!
Very well explained. Thank you. Watching from Germany where I will have this operation soon. We can take up to six weeks paid leave off work. That's normal...if needed. After six weeks you are paid 60,%of your wage. All this doesn't depend on the work you have. Anyone is entitled to.I lived in the US for two years and will never understand the system of hurrying back to work after you are sick.or had surgery. Even with a flue we stay home for a week. I hope one day your healthcare system gets fixed for everyone in the US.
I used to play video game every single day for hours upon hours for about 4 years and even though I haven’t played in about 6 years my hands feels weak, I have numbness all the time and it goes through my hands all the way into my arms. I hope I’m able to really fix this issue soon. My hands feel so tight and painful
That instrument is amazing! What a difference that must make having carpal tunnel release surgery. I've had the surgery done on both hands using the first technique you mentioned.
Thanks for this video. Do you have any videos about preventative measures? I'm starting a career as a software engineer, and would love to see something about healthy routines to have through the day that will prevent/delay the onset of CTS
So sorry to hear your test was so rough. Those can be pretty uncomfortable and/or painful. If you are in need of a release, let us know and we can get you scheduled for a visit with our office. We'd be happy to make you feel a little more comfortable in knowing what to expect with the procedure. The most painful part is generally the injections for the local anesthetics. Once you are numb, it will be painless. Most people notice improvement as soon as the day after the procedure!
A few years ago i was told I had tendonitis in my right wrist and then it lost range of motion for bending and for the past three days I've woken up with a lot of wrist pain and no circulation going to my hand. Im definitely going to go to the hospital but I hope I get taken seriously this time so I dont end up losing my hand.
Unbelievable… thank you for this vital information… I have to have both hands done… now I will be asking for the easy route to this problem of my hands.. I can’t feel anything with my fingers. I will be asking them to explain the process b4 having the surgery ❤❤❤👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I have the pain and numbness wake me every night for 20+ years. I was told by doctors in CA that I have CTS. I moved to AZ and was finally ready to get some real relief from this. The new hand surgeon I saw sent me for another never test. He said that the test showed mild CTS. The shot he gave me worked for a few weeks. He said he can do surgery but said the recovery rate is only 50/50 and that the shot can produce a placebo effect…..on some people. He said it could be from my head injury and that my Celiac disease isn’t a factor. (A Gastroenterologist said my undiagnosed Celiac can cause irreversible nerve damage) He didn’t use ultrasound and seemed not interested because the CTs was mild. I’m not sure if I should go through with then surgery and I feel like I’m going crazy. I haven’t been numb, in pain, and dropping things for 20 years for “fun.” This doctor makes me think I’m crazy.
My symptoms were so common and /or elementary the doctor just performed the surgery. Instant relief...had the other hand done 2 years later. A no brainer, get it. It takes like 15 mins.
As far a 4 days of recovery time, is that for people that don't do strenuous activities that require grip strength? What would be the total average recovery time for someone in a field of work where there is heavy usage of hands/grip? Also, is there any loss of grip strength after fully healing from this procedure? Thanks!
I've just started having some pain in my middle and index fingers and wrist the past week and was really worried about it being carpal tunnel since I had heard it's hard to treat, but this makes me feel a lot less scared and more confident to go to my doctor and make sure I get it dealt with.
Why did you not mention the natural way to soften the fascia pressing on the nerve. Myofascial Release can be used to help patients without the need for surgery that creates more Fascial adhesions?
Most of what this guy says about pathophysiology is correct, though incomplete. Yes you can get swelling of the nerve if it has been getting compressed or irritated by friction when tendons or carpal bones rub against it. However, if the swollen nerve was the sole cause of symptoms, then the pain would be present all day and quite consistent. Rather, most cases of CTS have most severe symptoms when trying to sleep. Why so? because when you lie down, interstitial fluid that tends to accumulate in one's lower limbs during the day, redistributes when you lay horizontally, specifically into the trunk and upper limbs. This extra fluid pools in the carpal tunnel, and thereby puts excessive pressure on the median nerve. When you understand this aspect of pathology, you can treat conservatively with more success: - reduce salt in your diet so as to reduce high fluid retention. This will reduce the amount of fluid that pools in the carpal tunnel at night. - reduce pro-inflammatory foods and drinks, which also result in increased fluid retention and redistribution. - lose weight. with additional weight comes fluid retention. - lose weight because some of the material in the carpal tunnel is ectopic fat deposition. when you lose weight you will resorb this tissue - losing weight can also help resorb excessive collagen from hypertrophied chronically inflamed tendons and ligaments, thereby increasing free space for the median nerve to slide. Cutting the undersurface of the transverse carpal ligament only serves to weaken the ligament, and not address the cause of CTS. CTS needs to be viewed as the body sending out a warning signal that one is overweight +/- eating a pro-inflammatory pro-fluid retention diet. If one does not address these causes, then worse pathologies than CTS will soon follow.
Watching this cause I been getting this all week and today I got it on both hands and all day I couldn’t let it go away so my right hand has been numb all day🤦♀️
Had the mini open procedure done on both hands two years ago, and the Carpel tunnel syndrome is back already. Back to wearing wrist braces at night again.
I think i have carpal tunnel. I went to the ER the other morning because unlike the other mornings, I couldn’t get the aching or numbness to go away so easily. ER doctor said ulnar nerve where it involved my middle finger (not just my middle finger mind you). It wakes me up multiple times in the night if I don’t stabilize my wrists. Cramping pain will shoot up my forearm, my will feel numb and weak and when I try to stir my coffee while pinching the spoon, it’s worse. The numbness is in all my fingers like a falling asleep feeling but then my hand will wait up except for the fingers mentioned in this video. Idk what to do anymore but I’m definitely gonna get some braces. It’s on both sides but worse on my right. I wish doctors at this hospital would do more testing. The ER doctor just tested my blood, no other tests…
I had carpal tunnel release on both hands, about 10 yrs. apart. I had the open procedure. I went to occupational therapy for both hands, at least 15 visits each, so a long time. About once a yr. I still have wrist pain that I have to wear a brace for about 4-5 days. It has happened to both wrist at the same time. I don't know why.
@@salmononrice563 If it goes away than it’s not carpal tunnel. If you feel pain from using a pen than it’s most likely RSI (Repetitive strain injury) But you can also get it from your tapping fingers. It will usually go away but check this out: “At first, you might only notice symptoms when you're carrying out a particular repetitive action. But without treatment, the symptoms of RSI may eventually become constant and cause longer periods of pain. You may also get swelling in the affected area, which can last for several months.” If you feel strain/RSI then you should just take a break for a day or two or use your fingers less.
I thought I had arthritis, carpool tunnel or some kind of major joint problem. I switched to an organic diet and lo and behold nothing hurts anymore I couldn't believe it. When you throw a ball too hard for too long as what all my joints felt like. 24/7. All from bad food. I would imagine if I actually had carpal tunnel it wouldn't have gone away just from that.
@@annabylina Mainly organic vegetables. The ones I buy are grown indoors with no pesticides. Grass fed beef. Wild caught fish and seafood. Absolutely nothing processed. Pretty much just drink water because most drinks have dye and other crap in them
Going to get my emg done I’ve been suffering with this after I had my son in 2020! They said carpal tunnel often occurs during some pregnancy an goes away, but mine never did. It got worse as time went by. I heard emg tests are painful so I’m a bit scared but will be relieved knowing what’s really going on.
I have mine in my wrist problem after having baby 2017 when my daughter is around 8mos. Im not sure what it is. Before it was so painful I woke up everynight and cried because it’s so painful and swollen in my wrist. After 3 years I tried PT he is doing some massage and doing hot compress, after 2 sessions I decided to stop because nothing is improving i felt its worsen. I tried visit to a doctor for bones. I had xray and he said it was fine he just gave me a medicine for imflamatory. And since then the pain was gone. But my wrist is not same as to the other it looks like their is a bone swollen. And now i felt numbness sometimes and a little pain. I dont know what to do anymore. 😟
I HAVE 2 OF THEM, 1 WAS ON MY RIGHT WRIST AND HAD SURGERY CALLED CARPAL TUNNER RELEASED SURGERY ON IT AND I WAS AWAKE FOR IT ALL. ROSITA WAS UPSET I WASNT PUT UNDER. SO SINCE I WAS AWAKE FOR IT I TOOK A BUS 🚍 HOME. THE OTHER DIDNT CAUSE PAIN AND NOW IT IS ON LEFT 👈 SIDE WITH ARTHRITIS IN BOTH WRISTS.
Brixter, Sometime Carpal Tunnel does manifest itself as a pain but not through numbness. There could be other reasons for the pain, but that is a symptom of Carpal Tunnel.
He points out all these abstract looking shapes on the ultrasound machine and knows exactly what every muscle, tendon, and artery is called. It would take me quite a while to make out anything from that view.
I get severe pain in my fingers and hands while playing guitar. I've already been diagnosed with CTS but I'm worried there may be another issue there due to the amount of "cramping" and "dull" pain that is present while trying to play .
I had a carpal tunnel syndrome surgery on my right wrist a year ago. Im still having a pain on my wrist and elbow. Is it possible to have the pain after 1 year of the surgery? If so what would be the cause of the pain?
21 years old and this cts is killing my hands it’s starting to hurt and be numb almost instantly when I use a controller for games or my phone . On average how much is the surgery
I did one of the tests which involves tapping your wrist and I was getting sharp tingling in my thumb, index and middle finger. I can tighten a fist but it feels a bit harder, I'm also overweight and my hands are a bit fat so that could be why I can't tighten my fist but CTS could be a factor too. I wake up at night and either my right hand is numb or my left but it's typically the pinky finger and that side of the hand which is numb... I don't know what this could be.
I’ve had extreme pain in my whole hand can’t even move my arms without the pain worsening. It shoots the pain all along my arms and to my shoulders. It’s only happened to me 3 times. Just randomly woke up with my hands arm and shoulder in agonizing pain. I’ll take at least 1200 mg of Tylenol and it only bearly mutes the pain. Im only 23 Im not sure what could’ve caused this. I don’t know if it’s carpal tunnel, I can’t even go to the doctor cuz I don’t have insurance. I hope this isn’t a new norm for me…
I sure wish you would fix my corpal tunnel issue. It hurts worse than anything I've ever had. And I had cubital pinched nerve in my left arm two years ago. Now it's my right hand hurting all the way to my neck.
