The music industry has changed drastically. If you want to make money in music as an artist, producer, composer or songwriter, you have to adapt. Learn about the best ways to make money in music today!
The question I get asked more than any other question is: ‘How Do I Make Money in the Music Industry?’
Whether you are a Band or an Artist or working behind the scenes as a Producer, Engineer, Mixer or Songwriter, the music industry has changed dramatically over the last 15 years.
Back in the 90s and early 2000s, the main way of generating income was selling records. And the best way to sell records was to land a Major Label Deal. Bands and artists honed their songs, sound and look to garner the interest of a major Label A&R.
Once you landed a deal, labels cut huge advance checks for you to produce your album and music videos, along with providing a big budget to promote your music.
With the digital age, sales record sales have dropped dramatically and are no longer the main way to generate income in music, which caused a drastic change in the music industry.
How has the music industry changed and how can we adapt to these changes to to continue to make money in music?
That's what I'm discussing in today's video. It's is a comprehensive collection of the best ways to make money in music, whether you are a producer, artist, mixer or songwriter.
Have a marvellous time making music! Push the boundaries, think outside of the box and make use of all of the opportunities we are given.
Many Thanks,
Warren

Produce Like A Pro First to start I must say how much of a great person you is. You learned you memorized you earned and seems to be satisfied and now you remember god by your great humility of sharing. You shared your knowledge and I remember heard the my Jamaican hero Bob Marley spoke about sharing the music or else it makes no sense and you touched almost every topic with great information which amused me of my talents of writhing making beats and such just for fun. I must say god bless you and I hope this knowledge and same blessings roll off on to your kids. Thank you

Warren, your channel is just perfect! I'm a singer that's just finishing studying solo singing at the music acadamy, but I'm also a musicin that plays several instruments - keyboards/piano and drums pretty well, guitar and bass just a bit. I do my own recording, mixing and mastering in my small home studio (always a learning process, could use some more equipment but that won't stop me!) I gave piano lessons to a friends daughter and she just passed her exam today with an almost excelent result! I'm still finding my way when it comes to making income even though I've been performing, doing clasical concerts as well as pop-rock-inde concerts for years now. All in all, I write a lot of different kind of music, sometimes instrumentals that have the feel of film music, sometimes very dark toned, sometimes very bright and happy and it's always a pleasure to hear your positiv tone and advice about writing, producing... Out of all channels on youtube, yours is the most honest one for sure! It's honest, helpful, exciting, educational... Thank you for everything you do, the time you spend on making all of these videos. All your good effort and advice will be put to use, that is my promise to you! Have a marvelous life! Greetings from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina! :) Sincerely, H of The Stage

It's great that you touch on these touchy subjects as well. Here are my top 3 thoughts on it: 1) If one of your goals is to make money, avoid the music business. it's always better to ask "how can i get better at making music?" than to ask "how can i earn money with making music?" 2) The premise that you need to make money "in music" is a recipe for misery. it's better to set yourself up so that you don't depend on earning money with your creativity. 3) Expectations, pressure, education and "professionalism" CAN totally suck the fun and creativity out of what you love doing most. it's more important to keep the passion going than it is to achieve some abstract standard of quality.

A very smart mentor of mine once told me do what you love the money will follow…. If you never strike it rich you’ve spent your life doing things you loved doing, and if you love it you’ll get good at it and people will pay you for that love…. It’s decent advice to take, I didn’t follow it and I’ve basically hated my jobs and never got rich so…

Excellent insights Warren....so informative this video was !! It's getting harder and harder to figure out how to make an income with each passing year as things change drastically in the industry...can be really frustrating. BTW, looks like a new 2nd set of monitors behind you with Ribbon Tweeters...which model is that ? Have you ever considered stepping up and getting a pair of 3-way monitors ? Do you use a Sub with any of your near-fields ?

You just gave the first accurate explanation of the current state of the music industry and the immense changes bringing us all into a new music world. I am old enough to have worked during these changes first hand as a former Agent, Manager, Talent Scout, and Vocalist. I would add only one thing. A truly well-trained emotional singer can with the right song, even a cover, launch a career that will provide that artist with the chance to go forward with his own writing and development. Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Tony Benett, Matt Monroe, Linda Ronstadt, etc. did not write their own songs. Never choose a mediocre song just because you wrote it.

Thank You Warren, I have been a member of BMI for 25 years but knew nothing of sound exchange, I've had friends that made a lot of money writing and performing (The Marshall Tucker Band, Arron Tippin, Zack Turner (Country Music). It used to be that if you had a song that was on a hit album you made money, I had other friends that were "hired guns".I do have songs on You Tube, CD Baby put our CD on there. We signed up with CD Baby to promote our music, but I wrote the entire CD. Going sign up with sound exchange now. Thanks!

Nicely edited video. Love the bit about teaching and keeping focused. As a drummer I had the fortune to teach "hand drums" (Djembe)for six years in schools, and special needs units, old peoples homes, Schools for the deaf and schools for the terminally ill, pupil referral units for naughty kids and youth clubs, along with team building events for business people, and everything in between. I found it a very humbling experience which is important in our line of work... Nobody wants to work with an arse. plus I made more money at that than I do producing and performing. It's a real hustle out there.

The information you have given is first class. I had no idea about the state of the music industry and I feel that a lot of musicians don't . If I had continued the way I was going I would have had a lot of problems to deal with. Especially how to make money from music. I am a song writer who is currently putting together a home studio so I can record and produce my own songs. But I realise I have to learn how to mix and master the songs after they are recorded so there is a lot to do. You have given me alot to think about. Can I ask you to do another video on the state of the music industry particularly in the UK where I live and also why vinyl has become popular again? I'm really worried about this as music is a career change for me and I want to be able to do what I enjoy at the same time I have to support my family. Thank you so much

One topic I would LOVE to know more about is sync license placement. It feels like such a lucrative yet cut off part of our industry. Where do you got to build relationships with film studios and other music buyers? How do you approach them? And once you have someone's attention, how can you foster a strong relationship by continuing to meet their needs?

Yes! I live in Nashville and I see many artists who don't understand the exact things you mentioned. The 'big record deal' is sooo hard to come by. The indusry today expects artists to have massive appeal. Artists get discouraged not knowing why they aren't 'worthy' of their talent. They don't know they are in control of their own career. I hope this isn't too stern.

Warren you nailed it again. So amazing and thank you for sharing. Glad the truth for change is revealed. Enjoy your post, almost feeling you were talking directly to me. Being influenced by musical productions of the 40’s, 50’s 60’s, 70’s, 80’s 90’s and now 2000’s. Learning every role as a Record Label, Producer, Publisher, Songwriter, Performing artist and teacher etc.; is natural for me. My life quest is to share my music with the world to enjoy. Thank again.

Thank you so much for this video. We are in an ever-changing world full of excitement and confusion. You have brought to light so many important instances that have been blindly overlooked and kept in the dark. I am a musician (mediocre at drums, bass, guitar), played in a band for years, grew up playing clarinet, moved on to engineering and felt I joined a seemingly dying industry. I knew about who makes money through record labels and have been at the mercy of them for payment as an engineer, but I write music in my free time for fun. It's time to put it out there. Thank you for this.

First wrote off this video as being too long so i didn't watch it, but that was stupid of me to do because i realized a bit later that learning more and more about music and different ways to promote yourself, get yourself noticed and stuff like that is very, very important and taking less than an hour to get some amazing tips on how to get noticed and how to earn money is time well spent. It's exactly the information i have been looking for, answers to the question "How do solo producers make a living out of what they do without signing with huge labels?: Thank you very much Warren for making this video!

Warren is a legend... he is one of "us" ... ...he lives and speaks in "real world" terms and this is why everyone loves what he does. I have massive respect for this guy, because, whilst being a family man and a producer/mixer, he still finds the time to create such in depth videos for everyone to learn and be inspired from. I myself have own studio (similar setup to Warren) and i am a multi-instrumentalist too, yet, there is not a morning that goes by where i am not watching Warrens videos and being inspired. I'm always learning...we all are... I believe every day is a school day - it really is! Whats more, Warren might give some advice or speak about something that we maybe already know, but for me, having that confirmation that we are on the right track can be as equally valuable for our confidence/mindset as it would be learning something completely new that maybe we didn't know. So wether its old knowledge or new knowledge, Warren is inspiring all of "us"!

The discussion about time to produce a record at 29:00 is interesting to me. It reminded me of this tweet by Jack Stratton of Vulfpeck, who is the band leader, and main composer, mixer, video producer etc. For the video of their song Dean Town he tweeted: "Second take. Hour mix. Hour video edit. And our biggest video to date." Essentially one guy in a couple of hours produced the most successful thing they'd ever created.

Love this video, confirmed a few important topics, I had released my first indie CD in 2003 on the side while still maintaining the day job and spending money and time on the side to promote, I actually lost some money when the CD distribution company went out of biz and owed me money, so I know what your discussing about how things are changing for us indie artists, I was lucky a video I released on RU-vid in 2007 has gradually built up views to be over a few million now. that's lead to other revenue opps you discuss here and some FM public station and commercial licensing, all good for aging artist as needed to take a few years off to have a family. Still doing the day job but you're Information is great as now kids older and daddy can refocus on being a artist, we'll see how the future plays out! Thanks for sharing! Ciao ALDO

Amazing video, brother. Thanks for putting in the time to do this. Quick question on the label side of things as I'm kind of coming from music licensing into that recently (EDM).... as a co-writer, is it normal to get paid upfront if a song is placed with a label to release with an artist? Or is it all just royalties and pub on the backend?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 7 лет назад
Great question Sam! Typically you only get paid on the backend with Royalties from Publishing etc unless you share on the Master, then you might get an upfront fee as well! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Thank you for these great insights. I am watching your videos the last few days from my home in China. I am a music teacher from Northern Ireland. Nice to see you have included teaching in this wondrous list. Thank you Warren. Keep doing what you are doing. It's really helpful. By the way I have dabbled in recording over the years but have rarely been happy with what I have produced. I am encouraged by your tips on everything from micing guitars to mixing vocals. I intend to record next semester in earnest and get my results up online. The music should be a mixture of original pieces and covers (mostly of old ie out of copyright material) in english and in chinese. I am sure I will be sending you links when they appear.

Warren, you're very much on top of your game! I've learned a lot from your channel, and some of the things I do like producing/writing various styles of music on my laptop to field recordings I have only been able to do because of this channel. This video was very informative of both the higher end of the industry (where nobody ever seems to talk figures) and the lower end hands-on approach. I play in a band and if there is something that sells it's social media and vinyl! Even live recordings on cassette sell well (having a graphic designer in the band helps!). Thanks for the marvellous times Warren! :)
