"Grease the u joints first, that way you don't lose the pins in the bearing cup" genius! Thank you great tip!

Thanks - this video was a huge help. One note - according to the manual, if the bearings were assembled without the small spacer between the two bearings, there is a different procedure for tightening the nut - my drive didn't have the small spacer and following the second procedure in the manual resulted in about 40 ft lb torque on the nut to get the proper 6-10 in lb bearing resistance.

Really good tips on this video. My seal kit came with a couple of o-rings that wasn't addressed in the video. I didn't have the plastic or nylon rings mentioned in the last part of the video.

Hello TC, Thanks for the detailed walk-through. One point I'd add is that on the later Alpha drives (and maybe on all) the spanner retainer nut does not clear the ujoints. In other words, Mercruiser says pull the entire bearing and gear assembly out to replace ujoints. Maybe, one might be able to remove the first ujoint closest to the spanner nut by filing the spanner nut edges into a "V," at the 4 corners in the way of the two ujoint pin caps coming out, as you mentioned, but that is a departure from standard procedure (which admittedly will save having to do the bearing preload torque setting at reassembly). If you try pulling it the way you show, though, most people (self-included) will be lost at trying to work with that big spanner retaining nut in the way and will likely snap off a tab on it. Thanks for sharing

Excellent thanks for the video and attn to detail. If you had a video on the lower unit of the alpha 1 gen 1, I'd have bought from you in a heart beat. Though this helps a lot in terms of confidence, there isn't much on the tube about the lowers..and that's where most of my issues are. Shifting and sealing. Please do the lower next

Hey, hello!🖐 You definitely know what you're talking about.👌 I'm a newbie to the Mercruiser universe. Just brought home a 2002 Wellcraft Excalibur 26' w/496 HO Bravo X drive. 233 hours. My question; Why wouldn't one just disassemble everything, inside & out, clean & paint? 🤔 If my drive looked like that I'd either not bought boat or simply bought a new drive.🤔 Just asking, thanks!😃

Thanks for video. Its very helpful. question. I used a copper based gasket compound on the two little seals around the shaft that goes down into the lower unit. Will that suffice? Also, do you have to use 680 loctite on the big seal? Also, one of my spacers or shims seems to be split in one place, sorta like a snap ring. Is this how it is supposed to be?

I figured this is probably a long shot being that this is a three-year-old video. I'm having difficulty lining up the outdrive to the inboard motor. I removed the motor to replace the rotten wood underneath the front motor mount. That's where all my trouble began. I will look through your playlists to see if you have anything that can help me get back on the water. Any advice would be appreciated thank you in advance.

without that spanner wrench you can'tremove it properly and you can't install itI always remove the upper bearing box when I'm doing U-jointsmuch easier to do and I also put a new front seal in you're right in there why not and you can look at all the parts close up after you clean them up to do a reassembly

Hey buddy, My out drive lost it's oil and the gears ate each other. I am trying to rebuild it. I bought a new gear set but it is a different style than what came out of the drive. What is the process for shimming the gears when you have to start completely over with a new set? The housing and race all still appear to be ok because I shut it down immediately. Thank you very much.

Hi - gr8 vid tx, quick question - replaced 2 seals on an alpha (one or two? doesnt have studs but thru bolts around lower/upper) today, but when we opened top both seals came out from above, nothing from the bottom. Kit came with 2 matching seals and one single one slightly thicker. We just replaced the 2 matching ones from the top, one with lip facing down toward the water/spline shaft and the 2nd seal on top of that seal with lip facing up toward upper gear case / gear oil. Did we muck sth up or miss something? I used permatex #1 hard/strong form-a-gasket instead of red loctite. held up 3-5 psi for a few minutes after the installation, just curious how you removed one seal from each side? At 24:16 - that ridge in the bore (after sand blasting) is where our 2 seals bottomed out from the top.. Thanks!

I have a letter F stamped on my driveshaft that is bad. I do have another one with the letter D on it. I know the D shaft is off a V-6 engine. Is there a difference in these shafts? Can't tell by looking at them
@James-eq8fs
@James-eq8fs 7 лет назад
The letter stamped on the Coupler End Yoke Shaft indicates the gear ratio of the Sterndrive assuming it is the original shaft and someone has not replaced it. The letter "F" indicates a 1.50 or 1.47 Sterndrive gear ratio usually found on boats with V8 engines. The letter "D" indicates a 1.84 or 1.81 gear ratio drive and is usually found on boats with V6 engines. Other that the letter stamped on the Coupler End Yoke Shaft all shafts are identical to one another. The only expectations are some MC-1 & R 1982 and older drives on inline engine applications used a shorter 8 1/8 inch yoke shaft. Other than that 1982 and older MC-1 & R drives on V8 applications used a 9 9/16 inch yoke shaft and all 1983 and newer MR/ Alpha 1 Gen 1 and Alpha 1 Gen 2 Sterndrives use the longer 9 9/16 inch long yoke shaft. The other expectation is most newer Alpha 1 Gen 2 yoke shafts now have an additional O-ring groove just behind the splines but the size and spline count are the same as other 9 9/16 inch shafts. See this link for a picture forums.iboats.com/filedata/fetch?id=7082896&d=1372098043

I originally ordered a new seal and put it in the carrier and redid the two seals in the other shaft. My issue is that the new seals are double lipped and they make the shafts turn a lot harder. I can turn the shaft without a problem it just wants to grab that seal and I found the same with the new carrier seal. After putting it back together, it turns tighter than before but still has the right amount of play in the gears. Am I doing something wrong or can new seals cause it to be a little tighter? Regardless, I ordered new a new bearing set and had already replaced yoke, before I go crazy, if it is a little stiff with all this replaced could it just be some tightness on the new seals. I'm getting the metal casing seals with my new carrier that I ordered, wondering if I should just knock out other rubberized new seals that I have already installed.

@drizler
@drizler 3 года назад
Corey Garrison I’m a torque wrench guy myself in certain applications. Still there’s only a few places that they are really needed if you’ve done a lot of wrenching . With 250 behind him he surely wouldn’t need one except as an occasional reference. Manuals really aren’t the end all be all people make them out to be. For actual work like this I get far more from a video like this than following a written procedure. Manuals are great for specs but omit much of the basic info they expect the mechanic to already know. That’s where these vids shine and manuals suck. Just my 2 cents worth.......
