A steep fall to swim against, mini dinosaur birds, bears, and other fish predators just waiting, and they still going. The great salmon run, flip flap.

THE FISH ARE LATE. In the past years, according to the videos and my personal observations, the river wasn't running as strong as it is this year. Of course, from year to year, snowfall and the subsequent spring melt will vary. It is an El Niño year. Does this affect the salmon run??? I am constantly monitoring all six LIVE CAM streams for salmon and bear activity. The fish are present in the lower river system. You can see them jumping, especially in the morning and early evening. You can see them in the underwater CAM. But they are not attempting to navigate the falls. The longer they wait, the more the initial first big surge will be. The suspense is mounting. The bears have gathered and can smell the fish in the water. I am watching the fall as I type. I see a couple jumping. But it isn't time yet. WHEN??? WE WAIT.

@TheErik249:there’s a chance the salmon run most likely goes until sometime in October and the salmon are most likely late because the water is a bit too cold right now once it warms up the salmon will all be coming like crazy also salmon aka fish are slow swimmers
@TheErik249
@TheErik249 Год назад
@@Megz1794 All of the water flowing down this river is mountain snow melt. It's more than likely in the lower 40s. I can't see the water getting any warmer anytime soon.

@Megz1794 Год назад
@@TheErik249 :it actually is getting warmer more bears are catching salmon now 747 has had like 8 fish today,856 had like 2,popeye has had like 2,801 has had a few…etc…
@Megz1794
@Megz1794 Год назад
@@TheErik249 but more bears are catching more fish despite the water being cold it’s most likely not as bad as it was before
@Megz1794
@Megz1794 Год назад
@@TheErik249 also this isn’t the time right now for the bears to be getting fat that most likely happens closer to winter time there still are salmon in the lake for the bears to catch and alot of bears have been catching salmon downriver aka in lower rivers. Plus bears have other sources of food

I grew up in Los Angeles/ Utah but I was born in Washington State. I remember seeing a salmon at my mother Community College when I was very little; eh 4-5 ish. Ever since, no going back.

I couldn't watch the bears at the falls at one point because there was getting to be too much carnage unnecessarily. Now, yes, this is nature. I certainly want the bears to be plentiful and strong. I feel, though, for the courageous trip for the salmon. What instinct. It became hard to watch when there were dead salmon laying around not even being eaten by the gulls. Maybe the fatty, high-caloric, parts were gone, but it was disturbing. AND IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE IN THE GROCERY STORE! 🫣🤪

If it’s nature wasting things, it must be ok. Maybe the bears leave the less desirable parts because they know they can take the best and leave the rest, of many salmon, during this window of opportunity. The smaller critters/insects will feast on anything the gulls don’t eat. There is probably very little waste at all. I like to think the salmon know their chances of survival (especially getting past this hurdle) isn’t the greatest, but that they are up for the challenge. An athlete enjoys the competition. A winner enjoys success. A participant that doesn’t finish, enjoys the journey. As for the prices of the salmon that we end up paying, it’s worth every cent. Those bears pay a big price as well: -standing/swimming in cold water -fighting over fish -risking the lives of their young, to be able to feed them the best food -being patient waiting in line-ups as well as waiting for a catch Hope this helps to be able to watch and appreciate the process. Nature is good.

Not a single morsel of the salmon goes to waste. Smaller & younger bears get some of them downstream and then the entire ecosystem of Katmai takes care of the rest. Scavengers, other fish, bacteria and the earth itself, similar to what happens to the ones that do make it upstream to spawn. The salmon support the entire ecosystem with their run each year. And roughly 80% of the salmon make it to their spawning grounds. If they all made it the waters wouldn’t be able to support their young. Nature knows what it’s doing way better than we do, just trust the process! 😊
