No, as a cybersecurity expert, while it is one of the safest ways is to air gap the banking and potential malwares by having two separate phones, I don't think a lot of of cybersecurity experts recommend that. That incur extra cost and you have literally one phone sitting around doing nothing except banking stuff and you need to carry two phones, one of them just to paynow people and use tokenised credit cards, the other one to call people which also need two sim cards. If this is the case, might as well just carry cash and credit cards around and pay using the old ways. No, we don't recommend that. Instead, the safest ways is to not use sideloading (meaning to install third party apps that is not through the official store). This is not to say that official app stores are invulnerable but reasonably safer. Be vigilant, don't any how install, don't any how click link, if it's too good to be true, it probably is not true.
I work in IT too. It is all common sense and easy to understand for us IT people. There is little to no solution for many technologically challenged users. Using 2 phones isn't a solution. That actually adds confusion to an already complex issue (to those users). There are no technology solutions to protect the weakest security, gullible humans. That lady sees several hoops (security warnings) but she decides to jump thru those hoops anyway in order to get free stuff. You just can't protect those kind of people except by locking down the device like Apple iPhone. No apps from external/unknown source allowed. Period. There are no workarounds.
@@Swimfit998 are you talking about games in Google app store or from external source (not from Google app store)? Let's put it this way, apps in Google Play store have gone through extensive security checks and scans to ensure they're safe for users. I agree there have been a few instances where Google fails to weed out bad apps in their store but as soon as they find out, malicious apps are removed from their store and the creator gets banned. I'd say it is less risky but no one can guarantee it is 100% safe especially new apps/games that's just been released.
@@Swimfit998 Some are safe. Some will not be safe for other reasons, that means some are very intrusive because of the app developer's wanting end user's personal data. Some are not safe as they are malware disguised as legitimate apps. They already make fake websites with different malware. Always read some of the reviews, read what some app developers want in exchange for using a free app, and still unsure then do online searches to cross reference with several websites. Free has been a lie for a long time bad marketing.
Everything is good until around 5:14 where she mentioned something distasteful where she said she herself is educated, 'young' and smart. Please don't say things like that which is sensitive. Some would even argue that the fact that she fell for the scam means that she is in fact not smart.
Maybe the banks should re-introduce the hardware token (or as a user option), so that not all withdrawals can be done digitally on the phone without user awareness/intervention.
Yes. and the DBS and Citibank data center issue during the weekends has showcased how vulnerable we are. Putting everything to digital is not a good way foward, not without more proper security and backups
I think the reason people feel comfortable downloading is because they are asked to do it in person vs. authentic scamming which usually happens anonymously through adds
Same thing if any stranger texted you a link, do not touch it! Delete the text immediately. So, as any phone call, they asked for all your personal info.
This is an awesome PSA, but also well worth providing subtitles in the different languages for our non-English speaking folks so they know this is happening too.
Junia Tan said: "I'm educated, right? ... someone young smart like me..." And yet she fell for a few pieces of chicken and nuggets. What's worse is that she is still so full of herself and naive even after being scammed (despite being so lucky). Well, there's a sucker born every minute. lol
That is a really great way for educating the danger of malware and even dismiss Android phone's warning for malware app Thanks CNA for making this great educational video
@@M_SCshe wanted extra stuff. How is that not greedy. If not greedy in first place, just call any restaurant or shop for delivery. No need download app for good deal
Junia Tan was lucky that nothing was taken from her account, reason for her account was not touched because she ran to the bank which most likely disconnected her phone to her home WiFi that would have prevented the scammer from continuing with the process. Remember scammers need Internet connection to perform such attacks. An advice to all in situations like this if you can't power your phone, or turn off WiFi, what you can do is power off your home WiFi AP (access point) or turn off the router.
Last year, the Philippines 🇵🇭 authorities closed 175 Chinese gambling organizations, and deported 40,000 Chinese nationals who entered into the country and worked illegally, many as *online scammers and other shady activities.*
No country is more vulnerable to hacks than the Philippines. One reason is Filipino companies don't want to pay for higher security. The second is most Filipinos are uneducated therefore are susceptible to scams.
The problem is people don't learn and take it for granted. due to pure greed, people will just foolishly believe the scammers and gave their money away.
OMG Not everyone can afford two mobile phones! I won't want to spend extra money and bring two phones out just for this purpose too. Just give us the physical tokens back.
@@marvint480second hand phone are dangerous ykno, it can have something inside that u wouldnt even know So i suggest never do so no matter how broke u are Just buy new phone thats cheaper in market currently which is a lot safer Stay safe my man
The ABS director probably misunderstood her cyber expert, even though that is the safest ways. As a cybersecurity expert in the field, I don't recommend having that because it doesn't make any sense to air gap the phones, might as well just do banking the traditional way, meaning, no ibanking, no tokenised credit cards, just do banking the old way.
It’s just plain stupidity to have 2 mobile phones. Neither do I want to pay for the subscription for 2 mobile phones. Should the scammers outsmart us when we all have 2 mobile phones, what other gadgets must we acquire? Lol
What about those restaurants implemented QR code scanning for do it yourself menu ordering? A scammer can just walk in, n stick the scam QR code over the authentic restaurant QR code??
Ok that ending was anticlimactic. Maybe I have been watching too much Scammer Payback & Jim Browning, I really thought Steve was gonna counterscam the scammer lol 😅
I am actually already have four active phones, one from 3Gseries that receive bank alerts and OTP. And do not use your phones for phone banking please. I am a Computer educator. And QR codes are designed badly and can be changed at will. I escaped from five cases with phone calls. More details if you ask me. Also do not go for free things.
Phones are the only way half the world can access the internet. Your solution indicates you should not be teaching security when you have zero knowledge or empathy for the people you fail to teach
Junia is funny. I'm educated too! And sometimes better not be tam jiak! Nowadays, scammers are evolving and engaging, so, don't get into those 'conversations' with them anywhere, online or face to face! Lines like "all you have to do" really does put convenience at a whole new level!! I'd rather walk to the nearest convenience store! And pay cash!
the problem with many elderly is that they have zero interest to learn new things and/or have zero concept on how technology works. They will either not watch it or watch the clip but lose interest or don't understand anything they're talking about (regardless of the language). I know this because I have many relatives in the senior stage of their life. All of them have zero interest in this kind of topic.
The first rule u need to keep is not to be greedy, secondly, be vigilant at all times and lastly, never believe in anything that is too good to be true.
Thanks for the information. We now know how malware apps inflitrates into our mobile. The suggestion of having 2 mobiles is good but the capital outlay is a concern, plus there will also be situations where mobile users interchangeably use the mobiles i.e. insert important passwords in play mobiles and vice versa. We can’t fall back to having just 2 mobile as the solution. At the end of this, mobile users will need to still be vigilant, a vigilant mindset .
CNA, Thank you for producing and sharing this educational video. If I have seen this video earlier I may not fall as one of the victims of a scam offering delivery of take-away food.
Crazy how they attack your stuff just by downloading an app, that lady was smart by turning off her phone when she noticed the other apps were flickering.
This is a great video. Can we have a version dubbed in Chinese or with Chinese subtitles so that my elderly parents can be educated about the dangers as well.
there are definitely more security protections that banks can do. That lady from ABS should instead also talk to the banks to step up their measures, not just advising customers to have 2 devices!
This shows that all banks are too lax on their security, and they are not interested in protecting their customers' money. All banks should be held full accountability for any losses to their customer's funds!!!
I think you've got great potential to work in the banks for cyber security. Please seriously consider that, and help us guard against the scammers! After all, it is solely the bank's responsibility to protect our money! 100%! How dare they be so lax to OUR money!
Poor thing, should given the participants free bubble tea.. Anyway 9.37 why must mask the guy's t-shirt. 😅😅. 9.42 never mask and can tell its SAJC. Viewers pls take note, only DBS, the lady managed to get through to block the card immediately,, rest of the banks taking forever to get in touch with them. You must run to them.
Those scammers caught must have theirs full face and name display on the Social Media. Preferably canning on them. These scammers have no sympathy on the victim.
The Phone was doing everything to let you know your about to download Malware except to reach out and slap you !!!! Come on people if you get a Malware warning DO NOT IGNORE IT !!!! IT'S GIVING YOU THE WARNING TO KEEP YOUR PHONE AND YOUR INFORMATION SAFE !!!!
Excellent episode. May i know is there any equivalent thing like this from Mediacorp's chinese side? So i can forward to the older generation to watch.
@@bertlander True, but that's all it takes to deter the scammers. The thing about crime, is that most of the time when the perpetrator is in danger of being found out, or challenged with a delay , they will withdraw the attempt. Hence, slowing down transactions is a deterrent. Yes, in a tech city like Singapore we want to be convenient, but at such a cost? Definitely not worth it. Smart older folk in Singapore still prefer going to the banks to transact, use cheques etc. The association governing banks even has the gall to say we should carry a second mobile device for banking? Come on. Don't push the ownership away.
@shelwee Have you not read the news recently about the old man in a love scam who raised his voice at bank staff because they wouldn't let him withdraw his own money? Social engineering is how scammer can easily bypass physical fobs. If the user is the weakest link, security can only be augmented by user-independent measures, such as intervention by the banks or authorities.
I think all of us need to stick to physical SIM and carry a SIM Extractor soon, now got zero download hacking as well. Malwares are getting more and more high tech everyday after watching part 2 of this series. Scary.
Steve please make a video on scam calls that calls out our name as well. And if there is any effective way to help steer them away. On RU-vid there is a channel that tried roping a group volunteers to waste scammer time and get them to provide the acct number they want us to transfer to get it shut down. Can u try if it works in Singapore. :D
I normally skip and spammed all the promotion ads through email or WA. I dont fall for it. This very scary to see how easly people get scammed just for a free buble tea😢.
You can use fingerprint or face id instead of entering password for banking app. Don't even open unsolicited emails or messages. Just delete immediately. On some phones, you have an option to answer unknown calls with a text message.
I just saw a couple of teens standing beside an ATM..and waiting for a text or pin to take out money. Look very suspicious with their body language,i over heard it's a thousand plus dollars . Everyone wants to be rich but no one wants to work hard for it
You can withdraw money without an ATM card. All you need is verification from the bank's app and a one-time pin to use at the ATM machine. The parents of teenagers probably don't want them carrying ATMs cards around. For people like me from the next generation, we prefer doing everything using mobile apps or cards. Cash is secondary for me when it comes to making payments.
For me your new time of just after 10 am is very suitable as this allows me to work in garden from 6 to 9:30 then BKF before you news comes on. Actually does not really matter as not live so can tune in anytime. Good content.
volume sounds good, I like the narrower view better than that xx wide view. like you said too distorted! Good to see Granny, she is looking good! Thanks!
