How Do Stands Have Awakenings? 

I always thought that it always depended on personality and whether or not the user is willing to "get better". We literally see both Koichi and Johnny grow and develop, resulting in their stands constantly evolving. The same can be said about Kira with him CONSTANTLY trying to hide himself with new tricks and always finding a new way to get away, thus having an "A" due to him never giving up and wanting to "get better". Meanwhile people like Hol Horse who are cowards all the way through or people like Vanilla Ice who are blindly following someone else are unlikely to change and grow mentally, thus their stands reflecting that by not developing or evolving further

7:59 Pucci explains in the story that Made In Heaven is an unfinished stand and the time acceleration is a specific means to an end and at that end, it will be complete. This is why he is so angry at Emporio interrupting him. He’s not afraid of dying, he’s angry that the final phase of the plan to achieve heaven won’t come to fruition

I think the logic for the Kira stands is that he never pushed his power until the final fight. He never had to put in the effort or understand much about his power. He literally had Bites the Dust for less than a day, and its own power resets the progress of Kira so he never even could understand his full worth. He lacks the practice of the other 3 stand main villains.

I think the potential stat doesn't just refer to the potential of an awakening, but also the potential of synergies and creative usage of the stat. D4C for example I think has such a high potential because it has a perfect synergy with the holy corpse.

Love how the JoJo series has multiple ways the Stands grow and change throughout the years: Arrow, Fusion, Corpse Parts, The Spin, Heaven Plan, or just time in general. Shows how Araki doesn't just do the same thing every time when it comes to making stands concept wise.

As the stat ratings aren't literal, i'd say the potential stat is moreso related to the potential uses a stand has rather than just their ability to grow, with the "awakening" of stands like star platinum being related to the user understanding better their abilities and/or realising there was more complexity to them than what they thought

It's actually scary to know that a terrifying Stand like Made In Heaven can get more stronger.

Made in heaven's potential stat makes sense when you remember pucci wasn't exactly finished just yet. He never got the chance to attain heaven like he was striding for and even in the anime he states it wasn't finished yet anyways

i think the reason MIH has development potential is because the heaven plan can give you a bigger control over time/gravity/fate like in dio´s over heaven case (i know its not canon), but since pucci only wanted to complete the plan to gain power to create a universe where everyone knows their fate he only had the power to accelerate time or in better words, he only knew he could accelerare time

i always thought potential was more like combo potential/ how versatile a stand can be, like with echoes all 3 forms are kinda bad alone, but together with another user he becomes waayyy better

I've always seen potential as different ways to use the stand and potential is tied to creativity of the stand. I've never thought of it as a way for evolution of the stand so it would make sense the more a character grows over time the lower it's potential stat should drop. However with most jojo character's especially antagonist they are static and aren't in the story very long so it makes sense why they don't evolve.

If Crazy Diamond had some secret ability it probably could be restoring the erased or skipped time that Diavolo is able to do...

An awakening or a buff for the stands probably happens depending on characters and how the user has a change of heart or personal growth in personality that comes from a specific events or situations. There are many kind of stand awakenings or showing the potential of stands over the years of JoJo such as Fun Fun Fun, Echoes, Star Platinum, Gold Experience, etc. Not everyone will have the same kind of Stand awakening potential as the requirement probably depends on the users' mindset when put into a specific circumstances.

I think with MIH, it’s potential is really more about how Pucci uses it, because it’s power isn’t necessarily to accelerate time, but rather to control the universe’s gravity, making it capable of a lot more than what Pucci used it for.

I always figured that potential and awakenings were dependent on your ability to evolve in mentality and personal willpower/drive. Killer Queen had to keep evolving to keep up with the morioh warriors and him having to maintain a fake identity all in the span of a month or so. He was also super lucky. To me, having higher potential just indicates the possibility of the user pushing themselves further or deeper

also potential doesnt thave to mean to get a new ability or awakening, potential to use different abilities, potential to discover something about ur stand u had no idea about, just like strenght, star platinum can lift buildings, kiss cannot, but the functionality of her ability puts it in A

I like to think that potential in stands is in reverse. For example, A means that they have mastered the maximum they could, and E means they know basically nothing about they're abilities. But seeing some other stands potential ranking, this theory could be disproven.

For M.I.H, I always thought that with a lot more time of him using of it he could rewrite people's fates or something, but idk if that was ever supported by source material lol. It's probably just the fact that it's GAINING speed and is not infinite at the start, that's why it's developing constantly. If I had to guess without that, it COULD be the thing you mentioned in another video, him using discs to remove stands or memories and stuff.

i have a stand irl. except its not a punch ghost part but the rest like stand users attract and absurd abilities. jojo is based off these weird, absurd individuals IRL who somehow always meet. i think that weird effect is somewhat real.

Not entirely sure who made the video, nor which stand was the example but the stand that was just water being able to pull a guys head into a canteen was listed as weaker than another stand that was actually weak and hadn't shown any possibility of that, maybe it's Hamon Beat but Araki had also said he had no idea what he was doing with the stand stats (I'm pretty sure that's in the same video I'm talking about, I'm sorry if this is unclear and won't lead to finding said video)

Stand stats can also refer to the ability of the stand like Whitesnake having a D in speed because of it referring to how slow it is to dissolve people's hearts. So Made in Heaven has an A because and Pucci even says it himself that Made In Heaven wouldn't be complete until they made it to Cape Canaveral in the 2nd universe. (Referring to made in heaven as a project) Also Made in Heaven still also had a side effect when Pucci was killed and the universe was reset a 2nd time.

Made in heaven could technically be able to run to different timelines instead of having to literally speed up time to get that affect. Kinda like the flash but using his gravity to make a dimensional wormhole

I see potential as more of proficiency and application. The amount of things viewers and readers have come up with an outsiders perspective on things is insane. I do feel the Potential of Joseph's stand is an E, but his growth was already at its peak. What he lacked in proficiency, he used in application like with making a map in sand, using it as a rope and channeling Hamon though it, despite ts showcased ability being spirit photography. Josuke though demonstrated high proficiency and application with his restoration ability using it to heal people, deconstruct and reconstruct objects. Knowing where to to take that further would take a lot of contemplation and application to further develop. Killer Queen though showed only a small potential for what he could do. Initially he could only create on bomb at a time, but i don't doubt he could push it further. I mean the ban could create massive explosions or explosions so small it causes disintegration. Had he thought of it, he could have probably make air explode without the help of Stray Cat. and the size of the bomb probably isn't limited either. He made coins into bombs and people, but there is no telling if he could have made an entire building into one.

Star Platinum had always been able to time stop, Jotaro just discovered it in Part 3, Josuke and Jolyne never really found new abilities from their Stands, but they could have. Part 7 onwards are a bit weird since they are in a different universe

I always thought potential was relative to user’s current creative application to the stand’s power. The stand might not have more powers to unlock but the power itself has more applications than the user has accessed.

I'm convinced that in josuke's case, he's just never needed to breathe underwater

I see developmental potential as a measure of "do they have that dog in them." Your hunger to be better increases your likelihood of evolving the stand but does not garuntee it. In order for Johnny to get to Tusk Act 4, he basically needed to achieve Nirvana. He had to go on a whole ass journey of self-discovery with Gyro, meet Jesus, master the Golden Ratio thus comprehending the very fabric that governs the universe, and get an alley-oop from a horse aka God's perfect creature according to Araki. I feel like the day Koichi decides to become the Buddha is the day the world will have to reckon with Echoes Act 4 Go Beyond.

Maybe it depends on a person's ability to overcome adversity. People like jotaro, DIO, pucci e.t.c had a lot of challenges they had to overcome so their potential for growth was high. But then with people like josuke who were more laid back they wouldn't have a chance to awaken any new abilities.

If I had to guess any extra Man In The Mirror had it would probably be his ability to exclude what enters the mirror realm since he seemed to have a decent control over that.

Sometimes potential stat is used for versatility and overall usefulness and sometimes its how developed a stand is and it gets used very interchangibly.

I always assumed D4C had an A in potential because he hadn't yet achieved the Love Train ability... although, admittedly, that's an ability he only gained access to thanks to Lucy assimilating with the Holy Corpse (or whatever).

I can't answer for most of these, but if you read Jorge Joestar you'd know about Kars' Ultimate Made In Heaven. So i guess that answers "what more can it evolve into?"

First of I'd argue that an E in potential doesn't have to mean you've evolved your stand, it could just mean it's very straightforward and can't really change much to begin with. Second of I'm fairly sure Araki didn't start making stand stats until like part 4 or 5? So at least the part 3 stands just had them tacked on in volume releases afterwards (Dark Blue Moon cut a large shark clean in half and has a C in Strength) And perhaps most importantly, the stats can refer to different aspects of each stand, perhaps most famously Whitesbake's D in speed does not refer to how fast the stand itself moves (it keeps up with Stone Free), it refers specifically to the rate of dissolving from its hallucinogenic acid attack! Araki probably put some thought into some of the stats, but he isn't consistent in where the line between each letter grade is drawn and what it refers to (a 1-2m range has been labeled E, D and C for different stands)

I think that the driving force towards the evolution of stands is fate. With Jotaro, he was Johnathan's descendent, so he awakened the same stand as DIO due to the bloodline connection between Johnathan's body and himself. With Kira, the stand arrow is directed by gravity towards those with stand potential, and the reason that Kira unlocked his third bomb was due to the arrow gravitating itself towards Kira, sensing the further potential in Killer Queen. This can be tied to fate, as we learn in part 6 that fate and gravity are directly connected to each other. Same happens with Giorno, who was simply chosen by fate and gravity to unlock Requiem through the arrow. In Stone Ocean, Pucci was fated to meet DIO, and was also fated to continue DIO's plan after Jotaro had beat him. Emporio says it best at the end of Stone Ocean, "Fate won, and you are the loser!", which signifies that Pucci was fated to achieve the heaven plan, and fated to lose to Emporio in the new universe.

I have a feeling Jojolands might expand the concept a bit more, seems to be very heavy on the flow and mechanisms of the world and will definitely be showcased via Stands as well. I just know November Rain is gonna get quite the interesting powerup

An idea I had for josuke awakening is him awakening Harmon allowing him to heal himself with crazy diamond it would be a cool relation with the fact he’s Joseph’s son in my opinion

i think since koichi had an A in potential for all 3 acts is because he didnt fully explore act 3. he only figured out one ability, that being three freeze. act 3 could very well have multiple different abilities, similarly to the other acts. i think bites the dust had an A because kira didn't have enough time to fully explore his newly found ability since he had less than 24 hours to actually use it.

For me it was always the higher the potential the better it will get when it reach Requiem, of course some requiem will have an A in potential if they're unfinished like Chariot Requiem

So my theory is why SP got time stop is cause just like dios stand the world they are actually both speed type stands that are also in the punch ghost category Like if we saw a third speed type punch ghost without a specifically defined ability all we could presume is that it too would have time stop For KQ SH and BTD the latter two sure hasnt learned how to master it and still feels the consequences of being new to the abilities But for KQ the only he could've done is been more aggressive with bomb projectiles like throwing stones that are bombs

Star Platinum has been shown to be an extremely fast and precise stand, it could draw an insect from a tiny picture and it could capture lovers. It was even shown to move so fast that it appeared as though Jotaro was using time stop in the Elder D’Arby fight. Star Platinum gaining the ability to literally stop time isn’t that out there

I feel like for Kira Yoshikage, the reason his potential for KQ might be A is because if you look at part 8 Kira, his explosions are way more destructive. Whereas DUI KQ has explosions that are meant to not be as destructive due to Kira wanting to keep quiet in his killings as a serial killer Now I don't know if SHA was used much by Kira, but if it is that might be the reason. Possibility that Kira just hasn't used it in many situations where he could use SHA creatively. BTD probably had more potential since it was a newer sub-stand to Kira which also migyt've resulted in the same reason as SHA Again just a guess, probably wrong. Out of all of these, I'd say KQ (base) is the better reasoning, still not sure but at least with less doubt than SHA and BTD.

I personally think that stands can evolve when the users only choice is to evolve. Jotaro’s only chance to win was to evolve, same with Johnny, Gabby and Koichi. Jotaro was going to died to Dio, Koichi would’ve died to Kira, Johnny would’ve died to Valentine, Gabby would’ve died to W.O.U, if they didn’t evolve. Kinda like a forced evolution.

Not sure if it counts since it is another universe but (spoilers for part 8 I guess) We see on part 3 a hermit purple that canno't evolve anymore probably because of Joseph's old age However in part 8 a younger Joseph shows a fully materialized version of hermit purple, showing he got the ability and learned to use it way before

I always thought that development was like what was possible with that stand like golden experience isnt that physically strong but there is much more to it(healing, and crazy planning with animals, plants, etc.) whereas emperor has very little Strategy i mean you shoot and track

Wouldn't everything be pretty much explained if the letter for instance, A doesn't mean it has a lot of potential left to gain, but it's at its maximum potential? I feel like that would pretty much go's in line with how all the other stats work. If you have an A in strength, there's no more strength to be gained you just are at the peak.

Makes sense if "potential" means compared to the baseline, and most of these "developed" stands aren't their baseline.

I think it's a bit of a flaw to look at stand stats in regards to just the stands in isolation and not including their user since after all stands are a reflection of their user.

For me the potential stat doe'snt mean that the stand could evolve but just the amount of possibilities the user can do with that stand. that's why survivor and hey ya have a E in potential because what the hell are you supposed to do with theses stand. In other hand D4C have A because is so versatile.

I personally have always read some of the stands with an E in potential which don't really have 'extra abilities' or had obviously grown in the past, were down to the users not having the mentality to grow and change their ability. if the user has no will to become better why would their stand be?
