This Q&A is pulled from a collection of questions posed to me by students of my Online Permaculture Design Course (PDC). Learn more with my free four-part Masterclass series, here:

Question:
When someone is inspired to teach permaculture what path do you recommend? Can you outline the succession of events, please? What steps are required in order for someone to move through training and on to becoming a registered permaculture teacher?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

Awesome! Getting my PDC is high up on my list. I'm more interested in running around running around helping homesteaders with their mechanical issues. I'm a retired heavy diesel truck mechanic (retired at 54 due to a minimalist lifestyle). I think Permaculture can go a long way toward freeing our people from grocery stories, 9 to 5 jobs and big pharma. Just got to get rid of the last of this cancer problem first. 93 pounds lost and got a 10% decrease in my cancer blood test. I'm actually doing this, and I'm not taking their chemo or radiation.

Yes... Be a permaculture gardener then, wait until someone asks because someone will ask and that’s the person that needs to know! Change happens one person at time.... Thank you for all you do Geoff Lawton.

I haven’t even taken the course but I’ve gotten my daughter to sign up thanks to dragging her along to hear Joel Salatin and Justin Rhodes speak here in Virginia.

I doubt I'll ever be a teacher. But I'll share anything and everything I've learned to anyone who shows interest. Thank you Geoff, for a wonderful year of learning.

Thank you! In fact that's what just happened. Someone asked me to teach (permaculture in the garden for beginners, not a PDC course). A few years ago I made a garden design for her. She thinks I'm capable to teach ... Because I never did it before, I'll start small: 3 , maybe 4, students. My aim isn't to become better than (or even as good as) you, Geoff. I only want my students to learn and to apply the principles in their own gardens and lives.

start locally, think globally. You are not alone, in your quest to share the knowledge.

Doing my best since 2014, exactly as described, still long way to go. But, it is great journey, every single day ensures me, that all I have learned during Geoff's PDC holds water (how permaculturesque expression) ;)

I know in Western Australia where I am, you can do a PDC but you can also go on and do registered training starting at a certificate 3 which is a hands on almost trade certificate and a certificate 4 which is online (avail Australia wide I believe) and also your Diploma another hands on group work where you get to design and implement a range of permaculture designs from rural to community gardens. I completed my PDC which led me to complete my cert III last year and am going to continue to do my Diploma, hopefully next year. You are very inspiring Geoff, ya never know. Maybe one day I will also teach. Good luck everyone.

Thank you for this good content. I'm a NEW SUBBIE to your channel and only found it by researching permaculture. I'm already set to move forward with permaculture because I prefer sustainable farming and frugal living. However, after watching your video, it made me think what is the difference of polyculture to permaculture? It seems they're both sustainable but which one is better in living with a small garden in the city or farm subdivision in the tropics (Philippines)? I'm also planning to have vertical gardening/farming that will serve as a windbreaker/living canvas among other things. Back story, I'm living in Canada at the moment but saving money to retire in the Philippines. In general, retirement or not my bigger picture is to address food poverty and living sustainably either from advocation or promotion. I thought gardening is not my strength but it helps me to fight my depression and gen. anxiety, plus this is my step to decrease my carbon footprint the way I can without being a vegan or vegetarian. I'm learning and researching the best ways to acheive my goals, please help.

Thank you for your videos with very useful information. I would like to ask, how is possible to grow barley and wheat by permaculture principle
@ingeleonora-denouden6222
@ingeleonora-denouden6222 4 года назад
My answer would be: yes it is possible to grow barley and wheat applying permaculture principles, but not in large quantities.

I have watched it being done with a degraded farm in tough salt affected areas in the wheatbelt. They made bulk worm and compost teas and used there Large John Deere’s to spread it around their farms. Was on Landline last year and they would have been growing wheat, barley, canola ect on large acreage. Anything is possible. Was very inspiring. I’m also looking at a holistic management course this year as that is good for the larger farmers to gain a better understanding of how to better manage our average. Good luck. 😃

I feel it's necessary that before an individual becomes a permaculture teacher they have a working model of a permaculture design that they've created of no less than a quarter acre. The reason being is that permaculture tends to attract very idealistic people. Which is great but I can't tell you how many "permaculture teachers" I've seen on RU-vid that just spout nonsense which is totally impractical in the real world and this does nothing for the permaculture movement.

Cant afford the PDC course, everyone in USA is over priced and over hyped. Ive read Bill's manual from cover to cover multiple times, im a science major and understand it intellectually and holistically, ive seen it lived out in real time over multiple projects in SC and can testifiy that it is more than a design science, it is a way of life. Hello, I really love what you have said, except about cost..... Can I give you our situation as an example of education costs. I am in England and just completing my on line PDC with Geoff. This has been the most amazing experience. It cost me £940.00. My wife is just finishing a three year degree in childhood nursing that has cost £9000 a year. (£27,000, total). She has gained so much knowledge in that time and I really respect what she has achieved. However, I feel I am the winner here. A PDC is ALL!!! its the best education any human being will ever gain, and in my comparison the cheapest. I have also read the Manual and I can tell you Geoff,s course brings it to life (I am bias, other courses are available, haha). Best wishes to you and yours in the USA.
