This Q&A is pulled from a collection of questions posed to me by students of my Online Permaculture Design Course (PDC). Learn more with my free four-part Masterclass series, here:

Question:
In Q&A 21 Geoff talked about the bamboo behind him and said it is an edible species. What is the name of this bamboo? Is it a clumping growth habit? I am interested in including bamboo on my 1 acre site. I'm in Melbourne, Austrailia, do you know where I can source edible bamboo species there? When I mentioned growing bamboo my husband said it is invasive and terrible, how much of a problem is this? Do you have any advice to aid me in this discussion?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

It’s a great video! And great volume of discussion! There should be more videos like this to break the bamboo fear in the gardening community! When someone asked about bamboo, for sure several gardeners jumped “No! It’s very invasive!” and such! This is such a Re-educational video, thank you!

We bought a property with large bamboo. It is the clumping variety. They send their roots out a few metres and other plants will not flourish in that space. In a dry period they turn the ground yellow. I lost a magnolia that was planted nearby. We have a particular bamboo that is huge. It is hard to manage and new shoots can grow down then up until the plant is a mass of intertwined stalks. The birds and native rats love to nest in it. Bamboo is a resource though - plant stakes, poles for fencing, firewood starter (especially the dried sheaths on the ground) mulch, cow and rabbit food (leaves), food (shoots)., privacy screen, wind break.

Thanks for this video ! I never really hear about financial investments on your channel, I didn't know that such gains were possible in 20 years on a farm. We mostly want a permaculture site to provide our needs as a family, that would be fantastic to be able to also long term profit off of it. Would love to learn more about investment crops... I just love bamboo aesthetically

There are some people in the eastern US who grow black walnut (Juglans nigra) as an investment plant. Around here black walnuts are a pioneer species and they sprout up everywhere, so you can get them for pretty cheap.

Great video, Geoff! I’m in USDA zone 6a. I grow runners to get bigger stems in my climate, and Fargesia clumpers for shorter natural, evergreen hedges. As you can tell I like bamboo!
@TheBarefootedGardener
@TheBarefootedGardener 4 года назад
TheMatron'sMilitia Absolutely. If you’re worried about severe cold, using leaf mulch and making a small compost pile on top of their rhizomes works wonderfully. I use cold hardy clumpers like Fargesia rufa for sunnier areas, fargesia nitida for full shade. The running bamboos (In cold climates) are more useful because they get taller, and therefore bigger stems. But you need to give them at least half a day of sun (check out my video on how to control running bamboo) Phyllostachys aureosulcata (and cultivars), Phyllostachys bissetii, & Phyllostachys nuda.Other genera spread a lot faster, like Semiarundinaria.

We have a nice clump of bamboo growing very well in a cut-down 200L plastic barrel. We use the poles for trellises, they're about an inch thick and probably 4 or 5 metres in length. I forget what variety it is, but I'm pretty sure we bought it online from Daley's in Kyogle.

@@justgivemethetruth Worm juice, water from the aquaponics, or Powerfeed. It tends to self mulch and doesn't really need much fertilising, in fact it doesn't even get watered that much. Oh and the cockatoos like to land on it, so there's probably a fair bit of cocky poo in it too.

We’ve got a running sweet edible type on 3/4 of an acre... heaving duty root barrier around it the simple mow over or kick the shoots or eat the shoots that pop up where you don’t want them, probably would of preferred the clumping type but what I wanted wasn’t available.

great video as usual! What tips do you have on controlling the spread of running types? We have taken on a property with bamboo running along two sides and steadily encroaching inwards. Installing a barrier would involve finances that we don't have currently and I'm wondering if there are any other ways...

Geoff, thanks for the video. For something that grows so fast it’s interesting to see how valuable it can be. Should most bamboo species be harvested every 4 years or will it differ from variety and climate? Thanks! Callum from Brisbane, QLD

@@futurecaredesign hi, you're quite right, it's a long time since I planted it and my memory was not quite accurate! It was 90 feet not metres. Thankfully I kept the instruction sheet. Got the name slightly wrong too 😟. It's Moso, Phyllostachys edulis/pubescens apparently. It says it may grow to 3m in cooler areas but it's still only 1.5m. However, bonus is it's hardy to almost -20°c so maybe one day...

Dear, dear Sir, Thank you again for being so knowledgable and generous with your knowledge. About the Bamboo though, if it's so easy to grow then why is it so expensive? I live in a zone 7-9 in Greece. Is there somewhere you can suggest I look to find out what kind of bamboo grows best here. I just decided to become a millionaire.
@TheRahsoft
@TheRahsoft 4 года назад
"About the Bamboo though, if it's so easy to grow then why is it so expensive?" Maybe because a) it only grows for one quarter of a yearb) its takes a while to reach maturity for harvesting( you saw the example of an 18 year old bamboo in the videoc) as geoff says you cut only 4 per clump each year, so for normal commercial purposes that would be a slow return on investment. I would also imagine you have to ensure its spaced out properly or you won't get straight canes( look at the garden centre types which are wonky)

Hi there, I live in Greece too and have researched this plant extensively for our homestead near Athens. From what I have understood it will be more difficult to grow here because we have the classic Mediterranean climate of bone-dry summers and wet winters. Bamboo needs access to water during summer, because that is when it does the growing bit. Where are you located?

I can make this yr work but after summer I'm looking at planning around 100 more tree from bamboo to date palms I think my undergrowth is starting to work for itself after 12 Mon just concentrated on protecting the dirt... Michigan _might_ not be ideal ;) however if you follow the ideas of Sepp Holzer growing it near a building or setting up a mound as "wall" and growing the bamboo in front of it could help. if it is protected from the North. In slightly milder climates one could risk it, the worst outcome is likely to take down the stems, sell them, and start over. If a fir or pine is killed or stumped by wet snow and ice rain, or gets attacked by draught and / or beetle, or felled by a storm, that's a damage after 30, 50, 70 years growth. With bamboo it is 5 years that you lose.

@jameskniskern2261 4 года назад
@@justgivemethetruth A rhizome barrier is about 50 to 60 cm deep either sheet metal or heavy plastic with no holes. Prevents bamboo rhizomes from going in a direction you don't want it to, like a neighbors garden, etc. A bit of a trench is dug, the barrier installed, then the bamboo is planted. Leave a 10 cm of barrier above soil, so if any rhizomes go over the top, you can prune them off. Good luck.

Other than fuel, fodder, mulch and fine crafts, bamboo is best for low-investment (easy to replace) outdoor constructions, poles for use in the garden, and indoors. Because it rots quite quickly exposed to water continually, or insects.
